    I’m a second year gardener.
I have been ridiculously encouraged by James videos.
I seriously never thought I would be able to do this.
I have also suffered depression my entire life.
My husband found me some raised beds and I grew 28 8feet tall tomato trees with a unbelievable harvest.
    I’m not looking back .
2022 was the best summer EVER!
I suppose it might be a priceless gift your helping others find.
    Thank you James P & Tuk .
My adult children are 1 years growers. Ty
As for 2023 Summer I think it will be a great one.

this is my 2nd year also. i have a tiny yard 20x 30 and was all shade for years. 3 years ago the tree died and its gone, my backyard is sunny. i had no xcuse and had 20 years of leaf compost built up. while the first summer was ok, last winter was the real achievement. with 4 hoops and 20x30 poly i grew and produced chard, beets, carrots continuously. with such a small space i must be careful not to plant too dense, which was my rookie mistake last year. i should be doing the square foot plan rather than just haphazard rows. i am also putting in blueberries and raspberries in the sunny front yard. my biggest mistake was landscaping with boxwoods, dogwoods, arborvitae, and japanese maples and flowers for 30 years rather than growing fruit trees and bushes. yeah, they look nice, but so does a hedge of edibles. incredible how we only think of landscaping with standard trees and bushes and only think of food at the grocery store.

Good to see you and Tuck back in the garden. I'm in the same mode here in zone 7A Virginia. Last week I built and filled two additional 4'x4' raised beds using the same mix ratio. This past Monday I added two different compost with worm casting on all the uncovered raised beds. I have three raised beds with cover crops that I'm trying. I found a lot of grubs when I was checking my raised beds and emptied my grow bags last season, so beneficial nematodes are on the schedule for when things warm up.

Hey james, what do you feel about cinder block raised beds? Had lots of extra ones. I plant marigolds all
Around the edges in the openings of the cinder blocks. The marigolds ring the raised bed. Also, Any advice on keeping raccoons , bears, squirrels? from digging up new transplants? It happens every year. Tried ringing plants with dried pepper flakes. Works for a while. It’s something about loose newly loosened dirt they love to dig up! And can’t use fish emulsion! They love digging those up! Also advice on keeping raspberries from squirrels or birds? Fake snakes, nets, fake owls? I live in the country. Lots of critters

James, you are so right about starting seeds two weeks later than you normally would, every year I struggle with the plants being too big, and the weather being too cold, and I always refer to my journal from the previous year and I keep scratching out the start date but realistically, I just should add two weeks to the last journal entry start the seeds and then the weather will be warm enough and I won’t have to worry. Thanks for the great videos and hey to Tuck”

I am grateful for the tips on weeds. I live in Southern Colorado and we have bindweeds. A gardeners and homeowners worst nightmare. The even grow through cracks and don't need water to grown. An older woman I met a few years ago said she grew up gardening with carpet under her beds. She said it was the only way to keep bindweed out of your beds. I tried it and it seems to work, but after a couple growing seasons, it breaks down and now I have to deal with that.
This year I'm putting up a new bed and came to Tuck to see what he sees is the best combo to use to fill the bed, and low and behold I found this tip with cardboard and mulch. I am going to try this under the area of the new bed. Thanks Tuck (& James).

Heading into gardening year five, I am glad I learned the lesson of not starting seeds to early in year three. My seed starting room is in the basement, seeds started to early are bigger and take up more trays. Taking a lot of extra trays up and down stairs to harden them off is a problem I like to avoid to save my old knees.

Tip for getting pine raised beds to last longer. If you burn them with a torch or over a fire barrel you turn that outside layer of wood into a very pure form of carbon which is one of the most stable elements in nature and therefor takes an incredibly long time to break down. Think biochar and how long it lasts in your soil same thing with a post or piece of wood that you char.

As usual, you and Tuck have me ridiculously pumped for the coming year of harvesting some goodies! Love your vids, now let's see if I can stop myself from starting everything too early. My money is actually on me winning that battle this year!

I am so glad you mentioned starting seeds 2 weeks later than suggested and the room potting up takes up if you start early. I've been stressing this! People in my zone started a couple weeks ago. I am not starting for another 3 weeks

I started my peppers when the almanac said here on Long Island, I went on vacation and the house sitter either over watered or under watered, so I came back and my peppers, cauliflower, celery and others were dead... Glad to know I could still start my peppers today or tomorrow and catch up

Great tips thanks! This is our first year since we bought our house and been getting the backyard setup! Got some raised beds built and plans for more and a cattle panel hoop for cucumbers and squashes. Can't wait for this Colorado winter to end!

Great advice! I’m adding 2 weeks to my last frost date and then counting back the weeks. We still have frost/freezes Z5a last frost May 13th and I always end up with a jungle before plant out. I’m no longer trying to beat Mother Nature as she always wins. I don’t like babysitting seedlings any longer than needed nor do I like the anxiety of frost threat and covering everything. I learned planting too early just sets warm weather crops back anyway.
