@@bobs5596 Some tips what we did to relocate our adorable & destructive ground hog. It took about 1 & 1/2 weeks to catch him they are smart and wary. We used a very large Hav-a-heart trap {Home Depot or Lowes} to catch & relocate ours. It needed to be a large trap because they are fearful & fierce and will bite off your finger out of fear and they are quite large. My husband wore gloves when carrying the cage to the car & we protected the cage with the ground hog from the hot NJ sun & kept him calmer by covering the cage with cloth tarp & an open end to breath. To minimize his distress we drove him immediately to the edge of a woodland about 5 miles away so he wouldn't find his way back, they will come back if you don't take them far enough. Groundhogs like to to live near the 'edge' of woodlands not 'in' them. He was confused when we opened the cage and he just sat there, my husband tilted the trap and he joyfully ran out, we and our garden were very happy too.
@@Earthy-Artist hah, and i thought james was a real hog wrangler. i pictured him chasing it down and grabbing it by the scruff of it's neck. my friends grandfather, from West Va actually knew how to do this. groundhogs are actually quite friendly, if you look at some vids here on youtube. for years i had one in my back yard that had litters in the spring. i would go dumpster diving at the local grocery and bring back all the wilted stuff they would toss. carrots, cabbages, apples, bananas. they would take the food from my hand. then one day in mid june when they start to get territorial i would trap every one except mama and take them to a nearby park for release. i did notice a big groundhog population at the park during this period. mama has been gone for years now and i haven't seen a groundhog in years since, which is good for my fledgling backyard veg garden. i have fence material but haven't installed it yet...

I planted my seeds in the seed tray less than a week ago, my broccoli and clementines have already sprouted! This is my first garden attempt in more than 25 years. I’m using grow bags and containers. Apartment living. It is what it is. ‘My seeds are sprouting!” ☺️♥️🙏👍
All great ideas! i love the “I will win attitude”, over pests and bugs. The peas cages are a great idea. Love your big yard and garden! Great advice. 👍
To protect my pea seedlings from birds I hang old CDs with fishing line so the disks hang down near the height of the peas. When light hits the spinning CDs it reflects onto the ground and dances all around, making the birds nervous. I have read that seeing movement out of the corner of their eye scares them into thinking they are in danger from predators. Cheap, easy, and it works!
Oh gosh James, I had the exact same thing happen in one of my gardens. It was looking beautiful - 4 raised beds - and one morning all of it had been mown down by a ground hog a/o deer. I cried. I spent double the money that year replacing all that I lost - and lost a lot of time as well. I love the ideas you had to protect your seedlings - thanks so much for all the good info!
That tuck thinks up everything, that’s why he’s the boss and head of security. He might have a bit of gangster in him, running that groundhog out of town and sparing his life. Forget about it tuck says.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️thx James as always.
Thanks I am in NJ too. I had a horrible seed starting experience so far this year and you helped me identify the problems. Fortunately I started so early I can restart the process. Thanks again.
I'm amazed at how much pest pressure you have, but also how many ingenious ways you have found to overcome it! I am definitely going to rewatch this video a few times.
Laughing so hard because I swear I have a robin, 2 squirrels, and a huge rabbit that watches my every move out in garden ! The robin actually yells at me😂
yes robins, first they come flap by right by your face; "just remember this is MY yard". Then they yell at you for hiding worms from them, or to move on so they can tidy up properly! 🌳🕊💚
Thanks for the information on protecting your garden from pest. My garden was hit hard by heavy pest pressure and a lack of rain last year. I just ordered insect netting to protect my brassicas. I also planted my first fruit tree!!!
Suggestion: Not only plant your tomato plants in a trench and bury part of the stalk, but also take a big pot cut the bottom out and also cut it in half from top to bottom. Place the pot around the tomato plant removing bottom stims and tying the pot so it stays together. Fill the pot around the tomato plant with your good potting soil. This will give more root for more nutrients and more growth. This is after the tomato plant has already a little growth to do it remove bottom branches first. What do you think?

So many great ideas here. I'm only gardening on a small scale as I only have a small courtyard to work in. I've only rarely had to deal with pests on my plants, and that's usually on my dwarf lime tree. I'm planning to get some seedlings started towards the end of winter (It's currently autumn in Sydney so it's a whilst away). But I'd never thought of any larger animals wanting to feed on my plants. That is, until YESTERDAY! I've had a problem inside with fruit flies so I'd taken my pumpkin seeds with the flesh still on that were soaking in water outside whilst I went out. Three hours later when I returned home, something had totally ravaged my pumpkin flesh and seeds. I couldn't believe it! I'd really wanted to save this particular pumpkin as I'd ordered veggies online from a store that only sells organic produce (and free-to-roam, grass fed meat). I looked around in the street and saw the culprit: something that has never ventured into my courtyard before: the IBIS. They were perched up high on the apartment block roof next to mine. The Ibis birds are well-known to be scavengers. They are nicknamed 'rats of the skies' or 'bin chickens.' They only moved into major urban areas about a decade ago. They take everything out of the garbage bins and spread the mess everywhere. At least I've now had an early warning: I must make sure I prepare for this before planting later in the year.

you may be a bit optimistic, here's what i found listed. ''The last frost dates in most of New Jersey are April 16 to 30. The last frost dates in northwestern New Jersey are May 1 to 15.''
You should be able to plant those things before the last frost, especially the peas. I am in Idaho, with a last frost date of May 10 and I have planted peas the last few days of February.
Ohh look at tuck, the little guy loves his pets ♥ Good advice for keeping out the critters. I have just noticed that the neighbours have 2 marmots that have taken up residence. My biggest problem are deer. Need to have 7 ft fences right to the ground. They even squat under fences if their is a 2 ft gap. I was amazed.
A caution with the Neem product. It's a great product but lethal to pollinaters-especially bees. Use very early in the morning before it warms up enough for the bees to start their day or use in the evening when they've returned to their hives.
I don’t care how bad a day that you’ve had, it will be better after watching any of James’ videos….

You should be able to plant those things before the last frost, especially the peas. I am in Idaho, with a last frost date of May 10 and I have planted peas the last few days of February.
@@bobs5596 Yep, I'm in Georgia and we usually wait til April 15.
You're the best guardian Tuck!! 🤘

A caution with the Neem product. It's a great product but lethal to pollinaters-especially bees. Use very early in the morning before it warms up enough for the bees to start their day or use in the evening when they've returned to their hives.
Happy to see Tuck back again. James how old is he now?
So happy that spring has sprung! also happy to you and Tuck again! Always good information and positive vibes! Peace and love from Ohio!

It’s nice idea. I have slugs and I need to put my seedlings up on a wire hang shelf to protect them. Otherwise bye bye seedlings. Thx
