  • Well before he was 7-time, Jimmie Johnson was a driver on his way up the Cup ladder just like any other driver to make their way through the Cup Series circuit. After a sensational rookie campaign in 2002 and a championship runner up finish in 2003 Johnson looked primed to take the jump and win his first championship in 2004. But, he fell short. This is the story of Jimmie Johnson’s 2004 season. This is the story of Jimmie Johnson’s Missing Ring.

Hitaki Rider as much as I prefer the 2003 consistent and fair format. Postseason wise, NASCAR could’ve kept the 2004-2013 format in Cup only. But no, NASCAR became a ball sport and a whole circus. Disgusting...

I'm not a fan of the chase format, however I do believe they should've left the chase format where it was after 2013. Changing it in 2014 I think has been one of NASCAR's worst decisions.

    Missing Rings
    Dale Jarrett 1996-97
After joining RYR in 1995, Dale Jarrett broke out in 1996, starting off with a bang, winning his second Daytona 500 in the second edition of The Dale and Dale Show. He followed that up with 2 second places. At Darlington, Jarrett ran out of fuel with 2 to go and wound up 15th, his first DNF of the year. The spring and early summer proved to be up and down. Jarrett won the Coca-Cola 600, and then had consecutive DNF’s at Dover and Pocono respectively. Jarrett flipped a switch in the 2nd half of the year, scoring 12 top fives in the final 17 races, which included two wins in the Brickyard 400 and the GM Goodwrench Dealer 400 at Michigan. Going into the final race, Jarrett was in striking distance of the championship, siting third in points behind a consistent Terry Labonte and a white hot Jeff Gordon. Jarrett stayed in the hunt all day, but failed to lead any laps. He finished second in the race behind Bobby Labonte and third in the championship to Terry Labonte. Although Jarrett didn’t defend his Daytona 500 in 1997, he nonetheless established himself as a championship contender early on, scoring 7 top fives in the next 8 races and 2 wins at Atlanta and Darlington. 3 straight sub 25th runs at Talladega, Charlotte, & Dover broke his momentum. He once again bounced back at Pocono and barely looked back, finishing outside the top ten just twice. He battled Jeff Gordon and Mark Martin on the track, the trio combining to win 12 of final 20 races. Jarrett was again in the thick of it going into the Atlanta. Once again, he was in contention to win, but he only led 5 laps all day, not enough for the title. For the second straight year he came runner up to Bobby Labonte in the race. Jarrett ended up missing the title by a scant 14 points as Wonder Boy cruised to a 17th place finish and his second Winston Cup championship. Jarrett eventually broke through in 1999, claiming his lone career championship. After another Daytona 500 win in 2000, Jarrett began to slowly dip starting in the second half of 2001. He collected his final win at Talladega in 2005 and retired after the 2008 Food City 500.
    1996 & 97 stats: 11 wins, 37 top fives, 44 top tens, and 4 DNFs.
