Ben Nicholson is a British painter and sculptor whose works, influenced by cubism, participate in the international abstract movement. With the firm conviction that abstract art should be accessible and appreciated by the general public, in 1938 he created Nicholson Wall, a fresco in the garden of Sutton Place in Guildford, Surrey. Born April 10, 1894 in Denham, Buckingshire, England, to painters Sir William Nicholson and Mabel Pryde, Nicholson's early paintings were still lifes and figurative landscapes influenced by his father's work. After becoming familiar with Cubism and visiting the studios of Picasso, Braque, Arp, Brancusi and Mondrian in Paris, Nicholson's work evolved into an interest in structure, eventually turning to abstraction. His paintings from this period are characterized by geometric shapes, linearity and white reliefs carved with right angles and circles made from wood and synthetic cardboard. After the start of the Second World War, Nicholson and his family moved from London to St. Ives in Cornwall, where he moved from the linearity and severity of his early works to still lifes and abstract landscapes, influenced by cubism. He received the prestigious Carnegie Prize in 1952 and the Order of Merit in 1968. Nicholson died on February 6, 1982 in Hampstead, London.
Love it Ben!!!
Thanks again for showing so beautiful and woah the music as usual. Yr my fav reviewer.
i really like many of his imaginative and colourful abstracts esp from the 40's & 50's..🌀
Wonderful presentation.
Um...I find it difficult to see this artist as...it's just difficult. I guess the freedom of the day for them in those years made it ok to just paint like a child and call it a day! Thank you for your hard work in putting this together! The music was a bit intense, but I am sure your having fun making these and that's all that matters!.🤗🤗
Thank you for your contribution Aurelio, may I suggest you place the text whenever possible outside the center of the artwork when it's in landscape orientation? Or maybe like a subtitle with a cast shadow? In fact, it's just the blur in part (and not the blur out one) transition with the oversized text that I find distracting. Just a suggestion. Thank you again
When I first started messing around as a kid, my landscapes often resembled his style. Weird that I'm only hearing of him now but then, I can be remiss about studying the history of art vs doing art. :/
Ben Nicholson, un peu la version anglaise de Morandi, par sa discrétion, on adore… J'aurais cependant préféré une musique moins éclatante et moins… stressante
N' stressez pas, s'il vous plait... coupez le son et ça ira mieux!
