    For the most part, the graphics look 10 times better than the NES version. But the background scrolling is so nauseating to look at, and its hard to ignore as it can cause eye strain. And while there are some musical tracks I like in this version, the soundtrack is nowhere near as memorable as the NES version.

      If you played this version, you would also know that the controls are very stiff. The NES is much tighter on the controls. Overall, the NES version is the best.

    Too bad they messed up the background parallax scrolling so badly. The PC engine doesn't do this natively, so they had to fake it and failed. Otherwise this version is a VERY clear upgrade graphically to the NES in every way.

    • @johneygd

      I don't know how they faked high detailed parallax scrolling on the pce, but just imagine if they not only used a group of tile sets per hights wich not only has different animated tile sets but they also have to animated in sych with eachother in wich each tile set also has to begin and end at a different animated tile set per walk frame dependong were you are standing, but i cannot imagine if they had to do it way as that would be very complicated, if they only used animated tile sets with simple patterns then you don't have to care about in whether position they're placing such tile sets aslong they are in synch with eachother, what i consider more imagineble is ,if they just used a special chip with extra video ram, and hijack the ppu to stream it's parallax scrolling backgrounds trough it, while the ppu generates it's frontground , but again am not sure how it was done,

    Agreed - I think people just give the NES version more slack because it's the version they grew up with and they're listening through their nostalgia filter.
    The PC Engine seems to me to have much better sound hardware overall.
    The PCE R-Type soundtrack kicks some supreme arse! :D

  • @MrSilksoul
    @MrSilksoul 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    One of the things that made this version harder than the NES version was that the jump n slash was less effective on here. On the NES I can wipe out a boss with one jump cause hit about 10 -12 times depending on the angle of the jump. On here it just hits once and leaves you open if you don't fully clear the jump.

    • @MrRoboto81

  • @tetsujin_144

    I think, rather than saying "PC Engine is in the 16-bit class and therefore a 16-bit system" it's better to simply cite it as an example of how overblown the whole "bits" thing really was. The graphics and sound chips have a much bigger impact on the games than the CPU, usually.
    Whether you regard PC Engine as a 16-bit or 8-bit system, it was a big step up from the Famicom.
    Sadly, it couldn't do parallax very well, as shown in this video.

  • @malducci
    @malducci 12 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Uhh no, the PC-Engine belongs to the 16bit era. The fact that the CPU is 8bit (byte oriented) means nothing. The processing power of the 8bit CPU is in the same class as the Megadrive and faster than the SNES. The 16bit graphic chipsets (the specs for them) also put it exactly in line with the 16bit systems. Same with the sound. If it's your opinion that it's the mostly inferior of the three 16bit systems (SNES, MD, PCE), then that's fine. But it doesn't make it an 8bit class machine.

  • @malducci

    (cont). The PCE has full 4bit color sprites and tiles (same as MD and SNES). I could go on and on. Everything that I listed meets the requirement for 16bit era machines and some of the specs exceed them. The ONLY failing grace of the PCE is the single BG layer. Hell, you don't even need specs - just look at Gate of Thunder, Lords of Thunder, Sapphire, FF special, World Heroes 2, SF2, AoF, etc.

      Why did the snes version not had parallax scrolling in it, they could,ve done it very easely,
      Trough i don't how parallax scrolling was done in cv rondo of blood via the pce cd ram addon ,all i know is, that addon has more ram,maybe it's partially hijacking the pce ppu to stream it's multi scrolling backgrounds to it while ppu generates it's frontgrounds, i cannot imagine they faked it trough complicated in synch animated tile updates, line scrolling is very easy and with enough sprites you can overlap stuff to also create the ellusion of multi scrolling backgrounds, either way it's interesting.

    It wasn't - it was an 8-bit system! In Japan, the PC Engine was so popular that it was the single longest-running and supported 8-bit system ever made.

    • @VOAN
      @VOAN 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Not really, the Famicom lasted longer. PC Engine was discontinued in 1994 from 1987 (7 years) whereas Famicom was discontinued in 2003 from 1983 (20 years).

  • @Xandermorph
    @Xandermorph 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This system is "16-bit" in the same way the Atari Jaguar was "64-bit" ;P
    I think it looks so damn good because the developers worked with it for so long that they were able to hone its capabilities. As far as a I know (and I could be mistaken about this, but I don't think I am...), the PC Engine in Japan outlasted the Famicom and was still supported for a little longer even into the PSX/N64/Saturn era.

  • @Kentama

    The graphics are certainly a visual improvement over the NES version (albeit, I'm not sure if it's as campy, and the stuttering scrolling background is a bit hard on the eyes). Irene definitely looks better, not as frumpy anyways, though Ryu looked pretty weird in most of his scenes. I can't say I liked the music as much as the original, not as energetic or melodic in comparison. Overall, though, it looks like a solid version of the game.

      I don't think I agree with the part of the graphics being better. This version is more bland, like having a nes game on a snes or something. The nes version had more details, felt better to me. Music is clearly better in the nes version. But I also prefer the graphics of the nes version. This looks a bit cold/empty.

  • @JasonArrington

    Whats really strange to me is why the name change for Jaquio? And as far as the parallax scrolling goes I don't think I've ever seen a card game on that system handle it all that well. Whats really surprised me was how well it was handled in Ninja Gaiden III NES but the SNES Version didn't even bother.

    A Mega Drive port running in higher resolution, with slightly beefier sprites and proper parallax scrollings could have been awesome! But since it didn't happen, I'd rather play the NES original instead of this. The messy parallax scrollings in this PC Engine version are rather unbearable and there are many other issues (altered gameplay mechanics for the worse, some unwelcome aesthetic changes... and the music is kinda off).

For instance, stage 5, where you're climbing the outside of the mountain temple to get to Bloody Malth has metal girders, chains, and barrels everywhere. Well from what i have read from coders, the PCE cpu is actually faster overall than the SNES 16 bit cpu, so bitness isnt the be all end all when judging consoles capabilities. The extra colors, background layers and 3dish effects that the SNES has over the PCE are product of its video procesor, and the PCEs gpu is 16 bit so...its not just about how many bits your cpu has, you gotta look at the systems architecture as a whole.

  • @malducci
    @malducci 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    (cont) compared to the Genesis 4 subpalettes (61 colors). PCE has resolutions from 256x240 to 344x240 to 512x240 max (again higher than the Genesis). The PCE can do up to 2048 unique tiles in vram and has a complete unified arch for tiles and sprites located anyway in vram. The PCE has a full working hsync interrupt system for the video to do scanline effects. The PCE can write to vram at ANY point during active display (SNES can't, MD is limited)...

    On a side note, I don't understand what they were thinking with those choppy backgrounds. I understand it was a way to work around the 1 background layer limitation of the PC Engine, but if the end result is terrible, is it really an achievement? The effect is quite jarring, almost nauseating.

    So you think it's only the 'color' that makes it look 16bit? WTF. I code for the system (and the Genesis). It's most definitely 16bit. Hell, both video chips in the PCE are PURE 16bit (only WORD/16bit read/writes, only WORD/16bit addressing, full 16bit data bus to vram, etc). The PCE has 64k of vram. The PCE has 256 sprite pixels per scanline (one screen width full). PCE has sprite from 16x16 up to 32x64 max PER sprite (larger than the Genesis). PCE has 32 subpalettes (482 colors)...

  • @JasonArrington
    @JasonArrington 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Id just use that jumping ninja buzzsaw move for the end bosses, Pretty much destroyed all their projectiles and took off a heafty chunk of life if you could manage to keep yourself from jumping into them, which wasn't too difficult to manage. Course the fact that on the NES version that move was about the only way to clear some of the insanely hard jumps made it useful for the stage too.

    Far and away the best version of Ninja Gaiden - imho, this exceeds the NES version in just about every category! Makes me wonder what happened during the N ES version's development, cuz the PC Engine is just as much an 8-bit system as the NES! There's no reason the NES version couldn't have at least approximated this game's look and control scheme (I think Ryu feels much more 'ninjalike' in this game).

    I don't see a problem with the music either, really... okay, it's not as good as the NES version, but it's not bad either. Given the hardware they had to work with here I think they pulled the music off relatively well.
    I like the NES soundtrack, but I never thought it a masterpiece, personally. That distinction goes to Journey to Silius ;)

    With a hack, most likely it can be turned off.

    What have they done? The graphics, backgrounds, dialogue. Would it have killed them to keep it the same? Or better yet, improved on top?

    It always baffled me as to why in the hell Hudson made this a crappy Hu-Card game, rather than a Super CD game? The Famicom games would have been perfect as a SCD game with proper cinemas and speech. Hudson did that a few times for some unknown reason. The Neutopia and Momotarou Densetsu/Gaiden/Turbo games should have also been on CD. I never understood those descisions.

    If you can't do parallax scrolling, then don't do it at all. Everything would've looked better without the attempt.

    Last 3 bosses require a "trick" to beat them. Real bastards. First guy: wall climb and then jump over him. Second guy, stay on the ground when he fires, so his flames will fly past you. Third guy: position yourself to hit him and the bouncy balls to keep their numbers low. How are you supposed to know that?

    I don't know how hardware works or what bits are? Do you know who I am? Assuming you've not looked at my channel videos; I'm known as Tomaitheous on the net. I know a hell of a lot about hardware of the 8bit and 16bit era, and I've coded for many of those consoles. Not to mention coding emulation. Figure it out :P
    And no, the Neo Geo is most definitely NOT 32bit. The cpu isn't even 32bit (original 68000 has a 16bit ALU). Only the CD32 has a 32bit cpu (68020), but yeah it belongs to 16bit era.

    Some thoughts on this port: the names are translated more accurately, although Bloody Malth/Master is supposed to be Bloody Mars. The Nintendo version changed a number of names since stuff like Joe and Devildoer just don't have the same ring to them in English.
    The completely replaced soundtrack and odd background changes may have been due to Nintendo's very strict (and illegal) licensing contracts of the time. So they outsourced the developer and changed just enough to qualify it as a "different game".
    As for the awful parallaxing background... yeah they just completely screwed that up. Could be an emulation error, but it exists on every Turbo-Graphics emulator I've seen so its unlikely all of them got it wrong.

    Rock hard game - wasn't it NG1+2+3 on one card?
    The Xbox reboot/remake was/is still the best last gen game on any system.
    Btw - PC Engine 16bit graphics - 8bit processor - 100% classic 80's game system (released October 1987). A fact that many PCE games 'Darius/New Zealand Story/Outrun' etc. are way better than on MegaDrive. Japanese game catalog on PCE was awesome.
    The popularity of SNES & Genesis in USA stiffled any future PCE/TG16 developments.
    Like and owned all aforementioned systems.

    I see what they tried to achieve with the background but it really didn't word, they should have noticed that before releasing the game and used static background instead. Too distracting.
