  • Today’s interview at the Crucible with Hazel Irvine, Steve Davis and Ken Doherty, Barry Hearn explains the current situation with the world championships being held in Sheffield.
The current contract expires in 2027 - what will happen then?
After watching this I felt as though Barry has already made his mind up.. what do you think?

We can't deny what Hearn has done for snooker, more tournaments, more cash for players, more world wide attention and that will have a knock down effect for grass roots players , but what some of us I think are missing is leaving the iconic crucible the world championship will lose it's tradition and Britishness that this place adds and no other could replace so in turn the tournament will become less appealing around the world because of that , just like if they got rid of the dress code the same thing would happen, by all means play all over the world, make millions I don't care but mess with this and I feel the world championship will be nothing special.

@@GameOvaisBy "A more comfortable living", what do you mean??
I used to want to become a professional snooker player for the trophies primarily - maybe the actual titles themselves.
The money was very insignificant to me.
I was enthusiastic about playing, because the game had much more of a gentlemanly ethos and honour to it, than it does today.
The introduction of the "miss" rule being a significant turning point in putting me off somewhat.
It served to undermine a player in the most insulting way possible.
Substituting that honour with "money" is a woeful substitute - the greater the amount, the worse the insult.
If Hearne knew that he'd be less inclined to claim he was concerning himself with players' salaries (if he has in fact expressed this).
Corruption leads to others being inclined to involve themselves in said corruption - whether directly, or indirectly (i.e. "Oh I want some of that [money]!").

Part of the reason the world championships is special is due to the small intimate venue. It makes it different from every other large arena they use for most other events. I’ve been to the crucible many times and it has a wonderful feel to it unlike any other tournament I’ve been to. It has an exclusive feel something special and we’ll lose that if we move to a large venue, even extended the capacity would spoil it. You want to be close to the tables and at the crucible no matter where you sit you get a decent view. It’s not Darts where you need to look at the big screen to see what’s happening, what’s the point? They might as well change the name of the worlds as it will feel like every other venue if this happens.

It's not just Barry Hearn, Ronnie has jumped on the gravy train and taken a lucrative ambassadorial role working for the Saudis, worth millions. WST should invest with Sheffield City Council in a snooker venue that can house the World's and also any number of other tournaments and qualifiers instead of traipsing around sports centres and unsatisfactory venues around the UK. The venue could also be available to hire out for other events and generate income that way. Whether you do this at the Crucible is another matter - it's a working theatre 50 weeks of the year...
