Wood Splitter That Does More Than Split Wood - Two Stage Wedge

  • During the video, watch for the many yellow side notes. After building MANY splitters, I put all of my best ideas into one tool. There is no room in the shop for a unitasker. This puppie does all of my hydraulic tasks, plus, it takes up very little floor space in the shop. Check out the two stage wedge. My goal was to have a tool that could perform six functions. I hope you will watch the video, and share with me your idea of what the next function is that the CAD Tr Model 6 should be equipped to do. I will do my best to fabricate the needed mods so you can see it do your idea.

    Pretty neat. I never thought a splitter could be used in so many ways. I have a 30ish ton splitter, want a 20 ton press, hmmm, gets me thinking. Great Machine You Have!!!

    I like the parallel to axel space saving design of the trailer mount, and the quick change cross-pin design for attachments.Some ideas you may want to consider: Working alone, I find a foot actuated pedal very convenient -frees up both hands; height adjustment for the cylinder could be incorporated (higher for splitter wood, lower for the press or other functions; a pivot and longer hoses could permit tipping up the unit into a vertical position as suggested by garrisonaw.All in all a very well made unit, thanks for sharing.Robert.

    Our splitter is a store bought model horizontal, vertical splitter. I soon found out how great it is at breaking down tires tho. On a whim I stopped at a yard sale because I saw a set of great looking one ton rear duel tires. The fellow needed them off the wheels for a restoration. None of the tire places could remove the tires. Ended up I went and took the splitter to his house and it peeled them off without a problem. He gave me the tires for the job. I'm still running them and he is happy as well. Also made a double roller for the anvil of splitter and use it as a press brake for flat bar stock. I need to cut off my anvil and make replacement dies as you have done. It also makes a good giant vice for the stuff to big for the bench repair. Oh yeah they split fire wood as well. That's just a plus.

    When I find a good deal on a used splitter I'm going to reconfigure it for forging. I'm going to put the engine, pump and tank outside in the lean-to and have the press on the wall immediately inside.
    Thanks for a great and inspiring video!

    You could put a hardened steel knife attachment and make a bar-stock cold cut press (requires hardened steel knife and semi-soft anvil). You could also make a tubing bender (2 1/2" heavy wall all the way to conduit) set of attachments. Nice little project you have there.

    Your design opens up endless applications;
    Cider Press, Compressed Earth Block (CEB) for House building, fence stretcher, fuel pellets / cakes of virtually Any size or composition, one I have thought of, food blocks like salt blocks made of leaves and twigs for feeding goats in winter, think hay bales for goats, 50 lb protein blocks like salt blocks. Instead of feed cubes for horses, 1 " diameter, make them one foot diameter, round or square...
    it is almost scary the possibilities enabled by such a genius design.
    Thank you. I know most fabricators can look at it and figure it out, but you could sell or give away plans to help folks.
    I hate to think what you would need as a retail price to market those effectively...
    why not sell the design to a reliable, trustworthy, manufacturer? Right! okay that was a dumb question Maybe..
    Anyways...Kudos!!!

    I love the idea to make it take up less space in the garage. Gave me a thought, I'm going to look at my old 20 ton Huskee and see if I can figure out a way to make the hitch detachable so I can make better use of the shop space. If I stand the beam up I still have the hitch sticking out in the way. It would be nice to open more space in the shop. I like your splitter, great ideas and looks like you really know what your doing, Iv seen store bought splitters that didn't look that well built. You set the bar high. I'd love to build a custom splitter, for now Iv just been adding modifications to my Huskee. Hopefully one day I will have some free time to see what I can build from the ground up. You have already given me some great ideas. The only thing that looks odd to me is the rack on the engine side, what's the purpose of the way its built. It looks bulky. I built one for my Huskee that you can check out in my video. I designed it after doing a lot of splitting. I wanted logs to fall into it and not roll over so I put a high back on it. Please explain your. I'd like to understand.

    Nice multi machine. One thought I had was to us a splitter as a winch. One could mount a stub of pipe to wrap rope either on the cylinder rod or on the frame. One could cycle the cylinder and take up the slack on the backstroke. Kind of like how a capstan works. If it is mounted on the three point hitch of a tractor endwise with traction legs it would still be quite compact. I have a splitter and am thinking of doing this modification.

  • @marpip01
    @marpip01 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Now you got to make a log lifter attachment that will lift the BIG logs up onto the bed hydraulically . I made mine with curved arms near the ground but a flat area up near the splitter so you can keep the split half close by while you work the piece that was originally split off . No need to pick up anything after it is split . The only thing that might cause problems for you is that it is made longitudinally which could cause the splitter to tip over if you got a big enough of a log on the lift . But i'm shure you would figure that out .

    A piece of square tubing mounted above the wedge area, and a piston that quick attaches to the ram....HEY PRESTO! a super duper can crusher/compactor! I could see two plates with hinges and springs so the cans get smashed and then as more get added the crushed cans pushes past the plates to fall on the ground.

    It seems as though when you pressed against your bearing attachment, that the metal frame shifted slightly. There appears to be a weak-spot or something. I'd suggest adding shock-absorbing motor-mounts to the body where you mount the engine to stop the vibrations.

  • @mikeforce1890
    @mikeforce1890 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    here's an idea: split a log. also, if you are building a log splitter, the height of the machine should be such that you don't have to bend to set a log or work lever....I'll never understand why all log splitters in America are built as if everyone is 5ft tall.

  • @garrisonaw
    @garrisonaw 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very elaborate, and some nice features, but the wood splitter needs to be convertible from horizontal to vertical so you don't need to lift heavy logs 3 feet to split them. Once the logs get over 24 inches in diameter, they become nearly impossible to lift. I like the 2 stage wedge - I may just modify the wedge on the splitter I have to utilize that principle.

    If you make a very sharp thin wedge.....you can also sharpen stakes with this easily. For ideas on how this works, look for "stake maker"! There's several vids on about it and they do a wonderful job.. This same blade will also make quick work of cutting small limbs into kinling wood without using the chainsaw which is kinda dangerous when dealing with small limbs.

    What great ideas... Check on pivoting the I beam so you can do it vertical and ... check on the circular with spokes multi blade to split a whole log in one motion.. very fat and effective and of course a better exhaust to make quieter.
    I really like the other suggestion of once vertical to use as putting fence posts in and out old ones and what the hell why not use to lift the car/truck etc in fast order. Love the side mount for storage... great job.. keep going. then sell as kit to make less expensive and for the do it your selfer who may not have welder but can assemble all the parts. and even sell a manual on how to from scratch...for a few bucks... Blessings... now all we need to do is get legislation for all public servants to be periodically tested as to their knowledge, understanding and accurate use of the unanimous Declaration of Independence and the Constitution... so they will at least have a choice to know if they are acting unlawfully or not. By not knowing anything different the conscience has been diffused. We the People need to make changes by public policy, legislation and Statutes. See art VI of the Constitution. thank you.

      +Cody Smith A cylinder that slow with no weight to push equals a big no. It's just going to lift it in the air. Typical post drivers just use a cylinder to lift a driver that has springs to slam down the driver onto the post. It's all about inertia if you don't have the weight.
