📹 About This Video 📹
This is the first in a long upcoming series covering the transition from a live dawless hardware setup to a setup that integrates Ableton live 12, max for live and midi controllers such as the Pirate Midi Bridge 6, Faderfox PC4 and Midifighter Twister. I really feel like this is the way to go after 15 years of experimenting with daw, dawless and hybrid setups.
We are going to go super deep in the coming months with game changing tips, tricks and programming wizardry!
Make sure you subscribe to keep up to date with video releases in this series, any questions drop me a comment!
People may scoff at the $$$ spent by simply looking at the thumbnail. But this kind of video is super helpful for those of us who might have spent just as much money and haven't found something that works. Appreciate this.
Agreed, also I come from a council estate and spent most of my time broke! I’ve had to scrimp, finance, buy, sell, trade etc this over the past 10 years or so to get to this point and sometimes I worry people will think I’m a posh kid with an easy ride 😂 glad to be of help more content to come 🙏
Totally with you on that comment and in tune with James' purview, I've grown my studio from something I would have self-consciously described as a studio in inverted commas to a semi-pro situation that I never really yearned to take out and gig with. Now it seems silly not to. I use logic but own Ableton and this exact use of the iftah max for live is something I don't think you can emulated using logic. Ive got syntakt octatrack and modular and a similar routing scenario to here albeit with a Ui24r. I'm extremely interested to see someone like James walking through a setup which is ahead of my own comprehension because it basically helps me save time with some false starts. The bridge 6 is on my list already as a no-brainer and the 'state-switching' in the max plugin is perfect for what I've wanted.
Since purchasing a base model M1 laptop everything's changed so I'm keen to see someone utilising everything a hybrid setup can bring to a set. I think we're well past the validation stage of hybrid arguments cos laptops these days are robust AF.
More power to you and glad to have stumbled on this!
@@jamiemackie8456 thanks for watching 🙏 I hear ya about the dawless argument thing, I fall into that trap in my last setup, dawless good / computer bad. But yeah it’s come a long way and I feel more confident integrating Ableton again plus as you said computers are getting crazy now
That midi fighter twister setup and the reload button on all is insane...ly awesome and it went on the shortlist immediately
Definitely it’s going to be very useful live for sure!
When I see setups like this I feel overwhelmed. It's so complicated, I mean it's not as complex as Orbital's live rig, but definitely not something I could possibly keep track of or have the patience to maintain.
I admire those folks who have the talent to do this sort of thing live though. For my feeble mind one or two boxes is just about my limit.
Il place bets that it’s more complicated than orbitals live rig by time I’ve finished 🤣 joking! I hear ya, to be fair sometimes we overcomplicate things but to be honest everything in this setup serves a purpose or fixes issues with previous setups rather than been complicated for the sake of it. Also if I attempted this setup 10 years ago I would of been ridden with anxiety, music tech and programming is a language in itself and over time you become fluent and figure out things as you go. I’ve just made a track today on it and all the complicated setup has actually made the creation process flow really smoothly and it’s easy to create wild results with the roar been sequenced via Digitakt
Been following you off and on for years James, this setup is genius.
Thanks mate! Just finished filming today next one should be up tonight or tomorrow
That's a lot of information, but very inspiring, looking forward to the coming vids about the set up (midi/audio routing) thx!
No worries! 🙏
Wow 😮 Very complex setup, I'm keen to see the breakdown of it and also the bridge 6 looks like a very interesting device! Looking forward to the next video
More content coming this Wednesday 🙏 Yeah the bridge 6 is fantastic! Will definitely do a deep dive on it
This is amazing, and exactly what I need. Thank you so much! I seriously cannot wait for more videos in this series ❤
You're so welcome!
Really interesting, thanks for sharing! I love to see setups from fellow hybrid musicians, have made the switch from Dawless to hybrid myself and don’t regret it at all.
No worries dude thanks for watching! Been following your journey to on here and Instagram 🙏
@@jamesorvis_mixhackers just clicked with me that you’re Druum haha - great to see you here too, keep those vids coming! 💜
Lookin forward to the rest of this series.
Filming more today ❤
Dude this is very impressive. great work!
Glad you like it!
The most inspiring and informative setup explanation I’ve ever seen!
Thanks for watching glad you enjoyed it 🙏
Incredible!
Glad you enjoyed! More to come very soon 🙏
bookmarking this for myself - excited to follow along. I've got myself in controlled mess too 😅 No no, just joking, really looking forward to see how you perform with this all too.
Thanks for watching! Been ill with flu this week so im a couple days late for filming, should have next one up tomorrow :) Hopefully I can help you control the chaos and offer some inspiration! Will add some performances soon too for sure, cause I have had a few comments about all this been unnecessary and over the top 🤣so the logical next step is to film a test drive and show why ive done this 🏎
Very inspiring 👍🏻 Using an iPad Pro 12.9 M1 with Loopy Pro and AUv3 for FX (loops) with an Audio4c interface for 4 ins outs from and to my main mixer. But with Ableton Live’s performance pack I definitely have to rethink my setup. Especially as the A4C can also route audio between my iPad and Mac, too. Did you consider to pickup an (used) Akai APC-40mk2 controller? As it offers the channel faders and a mappable A-B crossfader… and it’s made for Ableton.
The new iPads are crazy powerful eh! I’ve played with akai apc before, I literally need two faders or one crossfader, to saw kink using a midi CrossFader that could be useful
Can you map the crossfader of the Octatrack accordingly if you don’t use its scenes?
You can map the crossfader yes, I have since solved my fader dilemma by actually still using the midifighter twister. I’ve turned one knob into a crossfader with a button switch to same CC so I can click to switch rapidly to the loop
Excellent video & I love the sounds!
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed the session 🙏
That Variations plugin does exactly what I needed something to do. Im glad you made this video, because Ive been doing the hybrid Elektron/Ableton thing for a while now and most dont (probably because of latency nightmares which is totally valid). Anyway, I've come to the same point of not using scenes to trigger pattern changes, but midi to trigger scenes or macros or groups instrument/audio racks. Using Pattern changes to do that is a very similar solution, possibly even better, and now that I know about the Variations plugin I just went and installed it. Definitely going to utilize it.
Glad it’s of help! Yeah it’s solid the variations thing, it’s been done before but badly, like the Richie hawtin device that came out like 12 years ago but it used to crash my system
@@jamesorvis_mixhackers So I worked with it last night in my studio, but it has significant lag in my project when I trigger switches between variation. I have to assume it has something to do with the number of tracks I have, which is significant between the 12 Syntakt and 8 Digitakt alone.
My workaround for the time being is to map midi notes that play once the first time the pattern plays to trigger the corresponding scene in Live which activates whichever clips I have on it. For example, Pattern 1 Midi Track A will trigger scene 1 by sending Note 1. Pattern 2 Midi Track A will trigger scene 2 by sending Note 2.
I haven’t tested it with a big track count that is a bit of a shame. What system you on?
@@jamesorvis_mixhackers M3 Mac Pro 18gb
Subscribed... This is awesome and exactly the sort of setup i'm working on now although nowhere near as robust and fleshed out. Ableton 12 seems waaaay tighter in timing/latency though, also a MBP M1 Pro helps heaps. Can't wait to watch your upcoming videos!
Thanks for the sub! Ableton 12 definitely seems more solid so far and so much better than my previous attempts at this. Looking forward to testing an M1 at the moment I’m just using a 2018 Mac mini i7
Congrats !
🙏
Since, before I bought the MPC One, I used also Ableton. My goal was always, or rather I was always looking for ways to get away from the DAW. Until the MPC came into play. The MPC completely changed my workflow. The MPC has been my DAW for about a year now
I couldn’t click with it when I played on one but I think that’s only because I’ve been using Elektron for so long and fallen in love with the workflow and sequencers. MPC, maschine etc are all very good solutions and I have considered em before numerous times. Good to hear your really clicking with it as a daw, it’s a great all in one solution 🙏
i just ditched my analog to go 100% ableton as my mixer and it's been pretty nice so far. I previously stemmed out my jams to ableton anyway but the analog mixer was just another thing in the chain. I loved the workflow, but i picked up some DAW controllers to give me the almost 1to1 controls that i loved so much on my analog board.
Nice! Yeah I also do love the dawless workflow but Ableton as a mixer has so many positives eh! I forgot to mention many aspects in this video, one of them was the newfound benefits for recording for releases, having Ableton as mixer means it’s easier to record in one go, I don’t need to individually stem out every track on the digi and Syn either as I prefer to now record as a buss so it all interacts with distortion and processing which gives it a glue
@@jamesorvis_mixhackersI was going to ask why you don’t use Overbridge on the Takts but you kind of already answered it.
Thanks for this video, exactly what im lookling for to explore what setup would be best. Cheers!
Glad it was helpful!
you are next level.
tracks super engaging.
im now a huga fan.
thanks💯
Thanks for watching 🙏
This is gold! I'll be following series with interest. Thanks! 👍
Thanks for watching mate! More to come this week 🙏
Maybe you can use a DJ faderfox Controller with 2 fader for octa Chanels and 1 crossfader for blending. I test a cheap old one (DJ2) second hand and it works for me. Crossfader > split the midi cc into 2 and than 1 works inverted and also with midi cc curved. All over a blokas midi box. I‘m not in ableton cosmos, but I think there are also great midi tools for that. Great work + nice sound 👌🏻
I was trying to source one of these but couldn’t find any online second hand, the faders and crossfader is perfect on that unit. I may still look out for one 🙏
@@jamesorvis_mixhackers witch one you’re looking for? Exactly that DJ2 one with Midi Din?
@@dekoshe9250 I was searching for dj 4
@@jamesorvis_mixhackers in moment I don’t see here one Second Hand in germany online, but I can have a look for that piece, if you like.
Hybrid is the way to go!! Infinite potential! Great ideas!!
I think so too!
Thanks for this video. Can't wait to see your journey.
By the way, if you run out of inputs on your soundcard could you use overbridge on some of your elektron devices and achieve the same result?
I could but not keen on relying on Overbridge in a live setting, it can be buggy sometimes
@@jamesorvis_mixhackers OK good to know!
Hybrid for the win. Looks similar to my setup. Overbridge is a cheat code, and it is severely under-utilized.
Great stuff can’t wait for the beak down like slaving everything I have an i Tara I the faderfix a hydra synth an Mpc live mk2 and the digitakt and have been stuck I do also have the latest ableton so great stuff to see the brea down
Thanks for watching 🙏 more deeper breakdowns coming after the weekend
Really curious about how you got around the latency. I wouldn’t mind doing something similar. Routing drums and synths into ableton and back out into the OT while using EZbots OT project for transitions and live effects. This look pretty scalable to me.
Latency I’ve tested running Ableton at 64 and 128, I can get away with 64 if I’m not screen recording for these videos and I’m sure this will improve once I get a Mac Pro M chip as I’m currently on an i7 Mac mini 2018. The other things that are key to low latency is choice of plugins, I’m using low cpu, mostly native plugins that have 0 sample latency or I’ve chosen ones like the standard clip where I can adjust settings to achieve 0 latency.
It’s also down to going to options tab at top and clicking external sync on, this cuts away any latency I’ve found that is added within the Ableton project, takes it right down.
Interesting series, but seems complicated. I just hope Cenk helps Ableton to get the Push 3 on it‘s standalone feets, by streamlining the input interface. We need some Push „light“ to go into Elektron workflow (and if you need you can open the deep end anytime for the details)
Stand-alone push on release had me excited for sure but there were too many things that were putting me off whenever I looked into it. One day for me it will be a no brainer I’m sure but as complicated as this setup looks it really ticks all the boxes for my style, and I didn’t mention in the video but it’s a workflow improvement in terms of writing, recording and performing. I wanted to blend those 3 worlds which were always seperated in my studio
Thank you for sharing your knowledge, i am really keen to see more of this. Would love to see you live performing. Are you playing in Germany anywhere soon?
No worries at all 🙏 Hopefully will head to Germany again at some point, player Ohm in Berlin last year which was super fun!
@@jamesorvis_mixhackers oh i forgot you will become a dad soon, so i guess not there will not so much traveling
Il still be taking bookings 🏌️♂️ Maybe not for first 6 months
Great video, thanks. I am also thinking about moving from a v similar setup (Digitakt, Syntakt, Digitone, Hydrasynth Desktop, FaderFox EC4, MIDI Fighter Twister) to a hybrid setup based around Ableton Live. My approach so far has been to use my Push 2 as a live mixer and FX box with all three Elektron boxes coming into Live as multitrack audio via Overbridge. Have you thought about using a Push 2 or 3 for even more control? Also what about Push 3 Standalone to add all of the Live stock devices without using a computer at all?
Hey! Check out Datalines bandcamp he has a run down of his push / hybrid setup which is what kinda put me more on this path over the past month or two. I considered push many times but it doesn’t quite cover my bases for the style of music I make and the way I like to work and perform. There’s also a lot of dead weight there for me, I would hardly use the massive button matrix, and I would probably end up just using the macros, which is kinda solved with twister anyway.
It would give me more flexibility to dive into Ableton on the fly but I prefer pre planned controls to build muscle memory for performing and to come up with a system.
The push without a computer was very enticing I admit, but the money they are asking for an i3 processor is crazy, it’s a very low end computer and for my needs I need it to be pretty rapid and low latency etc
@@jamesorvis_mixhackers that's a good take, thanks. I'm with you on the utility of the Push, it is also pretty big in terms of desktop space for what it does if the macro knobs are the main reason to use it. And it's a lot of money for the standalone too. Also TBH now that the Digitakt II is out today I am rethinking my whole setup anyway because the main reason for using Push and Live (for me) was to get stereo samples into my setup and I felt the Octatrack was overkill for that purpose.
Awesome video, thanks for your work. What are your computer specs and interface settings to achieve low latency?
Currently Mac mini 2018 i7 but going to get a Mac Pro M1. Running buffer at 64 to 128, and the motu soundcard helps too.
Hybrid gives the best from both worlds. My requirements are much more simple, so Digitakt+AUM is my way to go.
What’s AUM? Nothing wrong with keeping things more simple, there’s a lot of power just in Ableton but I get a little carried away, plus all these boxes have served a purpose on recent records and jams
Well that's clear as mud... 🙂 (kidding, if it's an approach that works for you, great!). Have you got a way of the Elektrons changing patterns in sync in this setup?
Everything is in sync, if I change a pattern every box including synths change accordingly
@@jamesorvis_mixhackers What do you have acting as the master clock/transport in this setup?
@@ccmp23Octatrack is the master clock
19:09 problem with the crossfader. Are you referring phasing issues, or volume issues? I have both when the fader is in the middel when combining a live and a looped track.
Its a share you can't edit the fader curve, like on a DJ mixer.
Hey! I actually have a workaround to make the volumes at equal levels (with no dip!) when the crossfader is centre blending track 8 with the rest of the tracks. Also phasing will be occurring dependent on some settings and FX, I think there’s a delay compensation setting I have that off, not sure if that affects it and also one that it will most probably be is FX I just have filter and delay on track 8, I think some FX can add slight latency.
If your blending into a new track then phasing shouldn’t be too much of an issue, it’s really when your layering the same sound on top of each other with slight latency.
Anyway I think this document I created a couple of years go should help you out with this! It explains how to program the crossfader to get the curve your looking for; drive.google.com/file/d/1scCW-4FWf2zKJm0GU3dzpetVYE4RhVd0/view?usp=drivesdk
Also the problem I had was just the clunky process of recording a loop, crossfading over and hoping the next track the ‘loop scene’ was engaged. It was just very unnerving at gigs and had a few issues, one when I opened up for Josh wink in leeds and I messed up a transition due to issue just mentioned and a few other situations. 99% of the time it was 👌 But I much prefer the classic DJ mixer setup with two channels to streamline the process
@@jamesorvis_mixhackers oh wow will definitely check this out soon. Thanks 🙏
Floating multiclock!
Is there a video on your interface you are using?
Coming next week! It’s the Motu 16a
very impressive setup inspiring
Thanks for watching 🙏❤️
You don't need any IN/OUT for Elektron machine. USB sends audio to your DAW directly, and you can aggregate everything there, and saves you some cable managemnt hell
Very aware of this as an option and I have used Overbridge in the past. I opted for using my Motu 16a for better AD conversion, lower latency and reliable stability with less CPU usage. For a live rig all these are right at the top of my list of importance, I’ve had Overbridge crash in studio writing sessions many times too! It would be more convenient though and as technology improves there will be a time when all this is so solid and wireless too
The best and simplest DAWless setup is Ableton Push 3 in standalone
The best is whatever is best for the person using the gear and what they are hoping to achieve 🙏
Thanks for your insights! Somehow having a similar way behind me from ableton with push 1 and hardware to dawless and now hybrid with an ipad for reasons you also mentioned, space and overall costs. And being able to expand functionality is also a big plus. Just added loopy pro to try it out.
What latency times are you working with? I assume you have the buffers pretty low?
No worries! I considered push and iPad stuff too! Cenk is using push now. Latency I have tested at 64 buffer size and for this video I had it at 128 just incase as I was recording the screen and audio etc.
Im hoping an M1 Laptop will take me further 🕺🏻
Ah and latency 3ms round trip, 1.5 each way. motu card is pretty good too I think it helps
Thanks alot! 🙏🏻
Wow that is really low and you pops or cracks? I guess the cpu handles processing the audio from hardware synths much better than running vsts. It's when you start running vsts the cpu can't handle it in those buffer sizes. Can you try running a vst or 2 to show us?
@@85ringostaryo are correct it’s all about how much you load in. If I have UHE diva etc and run loops and other bits the cpu will eat up. Thankfully Roar used hardly any CPU 🍻 Also choice of third party is key, standard clip is also low on cpu.
I am running 128 for this video but I have tested 64 and pops and clicks can occur if I’m running other programs so it’s a bit risky. 128 is about 6ms round trip I think.
I’m eager to test a new Mac Pro with an M chip to see how that stacks up maybe 64 can be achieved
Push 3 will take that all to the next level
Considered it before I made this move but it wasn’t for me, I have considered it on and off since push 1
I have a P3 standalone. Without additional external controllers it's not a great tool for live performances.
Biggest gripe is if you launch a clip it immediately switches to the instrument on that clip lane so you can't be modulating a filter with the knobs on on track A, and trigger track B's clip without losing control of the instrument on track A. It's just dumb.
I do like that every thing is in one place though. One project for the whole set, no more having to load various patches, and patterns on separate boxes and keeping all that organized. That drives me crazy with my dawless jams.
Sorry, where can I find that M4L device called “Variations” please? I can’t find it anywhere. Thank you! 🙏🏻
Sorry I should of explained location, it should be in the packs section of the Ableton browser under the performance pack by Iftah. Here’s the page on Ableton site for reference www.ableton.com/en/packs/performance-pack/#?
Also the performer device looked really cool but I can’t use it as it eats up CPU like crazy at the lower buffer settings that I’m running at
Where I can check all these live performances you mentioned at the beginning of the video?
So there’s loads of jams further back on this channel under ‘Jamuary’, also my Instagram @druumlive has loads of jams.
For the older stuff it’s under Paris XY, James Orvis, Druum & Melatron, those are the projects to search and you will find things knocking around on here.
Also some videos I unlisted when I changed this channel to what it is now
But how is there no latency? Because everything goes through overbridge?
No overbridge, I’m routing audio in via motu 16a running at 64 buffer or 128 for this video for cpu
Hey! Thats exactly how i always wanted to have mine. Thank you so much!!!
Do you think there is some disadvantage if i use the usb cable for the audio of the elektron devices except octatrack and some synth of course).
I mentioned that even in ezbots patreon but there never was a real reaction to it. I am so happy that i did not bought a big mixer and now can buy me a good soundcard with enough outputs
i only got some midi merger and through boxes tbh.
can i use the OT as masterclock ect. as well or do i really need the master clock thing?
Hey :) Good to hear it’s been a helpful video! So my thoughts on Overbridge for me personally is my concerns with stability in a live setting due to issues I’ve had occasionally with it crashing in the past, this may actually not be an issue yet. The other concerns are increased cpu usage and latency via Overbridge, again maybe this has gotten better? You would have to test it to find out what the latency is compared to what I’m getting here, or if I have some time this weekend I can take a look, maybe that could be a video too as it’s been asked a few times and I am also curious.
I had to buy a Digitakt 2 on release, I’ve been in touch with Elektron, they’ve shared my jams on Instagram and I’ve made a pack for analog four in 2016 along with an interview but unfortunately I wasn’t included in that campaign! I do keep pestering them 😂 Maybe I’m just not there yet with channel numbers but I think I definitely can add my own twist to promoting the box and pushing it. I’m not too disheartened though as there are many awesome content curators on here that also didn’t get selected to review and make content early. Still expect some content and review of the Digitakt 2 next week though! It will be getting a straight swap in this rig :)
I am also using Octatrack as master clock so yes ;) Bridge 6 even though it’s top of the chain isn’t actually sending clock but it is capable of it
Ah. Yes i would love to try it. I now do have kind of similar set up as you but not hybrid. So Rytm in A+B of OT. Minilogue, TD3 in Digitone and then in C+D of OT. OT Main out go in Soundcard so i only have one Track in ableton :( So now do all effekt stuff ect with Ezbot performance template but i would love to do effects per indivual track of rytm and Digitone. That would be soo killer
Problem is that i have a super small soundcard with only one stereo output and struggeling around since month cause before your video i didnt had even a clue how to get this done or whats best/works

Is that M4L device something you made or is it available online somewhere? It looks incredibly useful!
It comes free in Ableton Live 12 Suite! 🙏 Performer max for live devices
What I think is causing confusion is that the software is being called a device. You are midi mapping the midi fighter twister to the max 4 live performance device, right? Which is a part of Abletons Live Performance software. So that is how you set up the reload all button. Which is amazing. Very inspiring stuff. I'm looking forward to all the new vids on this setup and the stuff you create with it. Imma go look if you're ever in a location near me. Gotta judge for myself if you can out dirty the DJs now :)
@@njitsnadaout dirty the dj challenge 😂 I agree, planning on going deeper into these topics over the series, I wanted to do a real quick run down of possibilities. So plan is to individual video tutorials on each aspect in 10 min videos with links and references etc.
I was also very excited when I discovered the reload thing! I’ve always had apprehensions about M4L though from previous experiences pre 2015, there was a lot of promising devices knocking about that used to crash Ableton and couldn’t be trusted live. Things seem to have gotten a lot better now :)

How are you doing patch changes on the hydra? I am doing it by storing the midi prog source on a trig, but i am having some latencies with this.
Patch changes on Hydra always have an audible lag which is annoying, where as the Typhon you can make a patch change and there’s no cutting of the audio or delay. I recommend changing patches with a program change message from a midi track and making a trigless trig with the PC change message or lock it to first trig

is your octatrack input clipping?
Usually orange led with the way I’ve limited the outputs at a certain db but possibly a little red maybe now and again. Clipping octa mk2 inputs can often sound pretty sexy (genre dependent) but I try to keep it orange
@@jamesorvis_mixhackersim really noob with the octa so i try to understand how clipping work, thanks for answer. Your setup sound really great 🤤

@@elrus0oalso clipping can sound really good 🎉 It’s often deemed as the enemy but it’s essentially a kind of distortion or saturation when you hit sweet spots.
Dude use EZBots Octatrack template. Problem solved. Arm to record, record your loop, crossfade over. While thats playing, mangle/distort it and mute/unmute other tracks/devices/etc and when you're ready just fade back over.

@jamesorvis_mixhackers All the luck. But you won't need it. You're connecting so many dots on a daily basis. While I struggle to get my head wrapped around just my Syntakt and an Ipad. If you approach this kid with all the love, passion, and tenacity, and explain your perspective on life like you do in your vids. You are solid 👌 💯
@@njitsnada thank you 🙏 My goal is to help him discover his passions even if it’s something I have no interest in! Obviously hoping he takes to music but I will find joy in seeing him discover his interests.
Keep going with it all, I have struggled to figure things out too and in 2024 technology has advanced along with good quality tuition and free content on YT. I’d say master one device at a time and push it to its limit then keep bringing in new elements and refining the workflow. Hopefully I can give you some ideas to get things moving along quicker 🙏
Why the hell Ableton and not the more modern Bitwig?
Cause I did test Bitwig and the distortion options were pointless compared to Ableton roar. Gotta remember my biggest incentive to sell distortion pedals was to use the power of the new roar plug-in.
I did get excited about prospects of Bitwig after chatting with Ben Pest who uses it a lot, so it was on the cards for a while! Maybe someday but for now this setup for me and what I’m making is 👌
This comment is totally nonsense. Because of the integration of Max, Ableton will always be the most modern DAW in existence. At least it can be if you can probably use all the stuff available to you.
