    nice one! So many vids im seeing lately the Syntakt is just not get used anymore, feels like a bit of redundant box these days, especially if you get a Digitakt 2

      It’s just cause it’s the new shiny thing, I’ve made a conscious effort to focus on the Digitakt 2 in these videos to squeeze the juice out of it. Syntakt is stuck on the live pedalboard and I’m still writing and performing with it. Ones a sampler and the other is an analog/digital synthesiser/drum machine. They compliment each other very well :)

    We have an extremely similar setup. I have digitakt 2, digitone, octatrack, hydrasynth, expressive e osmose, korg kaoss replay, erae touch and midi fighter twister. I got the osmose for some crazy standalone MPE stuff. But the twister is by far the most useful piece of kit for hybrid setups.

    • @jamesorvis_mixhackers
      @jamesorvis_mixhackers 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      For me it’s about driving it through the master drive, adding track distortion and also try modulating the pitch slowly or randomly with an LFO so the osc are always moving and detuning. That should make it sound more organic and alive

  • @ChildOfSaturnMusic

    Thanks for the video! I've been indecisive about whether to get a Syntakt or Digitakt II as my first groovebox. I don't often get to buy new gear so I'm trying to make it count. I understand the fundamental differences and watched a lot of videos on each. I have the Hydrasynth Explorer, Microfreak, and some other mono synths, so I realize the value of having a versatile sampler, yet I'm still drawn to the synths inside the Syntakt. Which would you recommend?

    • @jamesorvis_mixhackers
      @jamesorvis_mixhackers 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Ah man it’s a tough one! They both have their strengths. You can get pretty much anything out of the Digitakt 2 by twisting samples and turning stuff into synths, or using tricks like creating a single cycle waveform as an oscillator, using LFO to create FM etc I think it boils down to the music you make? Syntakt is great for modular style sequences, analog percussion (analog doesn’t necessarily mean better always though) wierd stuff and synthesised sounds. Digitakt 2 is an all rounder and with the right samples I’d take that as a desert island music making box due to its versatility. If I had to chose for me personally I’d start with Digitakt 2. But let me know genres first and il give you more insight

Also thanks pal, another cracking video and glad your head's cleared up post-actual-poss-covid-goop EDIT: just ordered Bridge6 thru your affiliate. EDIT #2 so couple Qs firstly what can the Digitakt 2 control on Ableton the Digi 1 couldn't and secondly you don't seem to be at all concerned about the 'red-line' OT indicators - it's been chatted all over Elektronauts but I'm guessing you've never come a cropper on the DACs or whatever running it hot?

    • @jamesorvis_mixhackers
      @jamesorvis_mixhackers 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      🤣 was trying to figure out who ya meant, grimes? I chucked a joke in one of these videos was it this one? 😂 I got a notification for affiliate sale yesterday so I’m guessing that’s you 🙏 Going to do som deeper videos on bridge six very soon, I’ve already filmed em actually just need to edit and schedule em. So Digitakt 1 and 2 can do the same midi stuff pretty much it’s just Digitakt 2 has more in terms of CC parameters per track, it’s 16 instead of 8 and you can save them as presets and rename parameters etc. Yeah the red on OT can sound sweet i often slam it but due to slamming the signal already a lot I don’t need to hit OT has hard. The red can be used as a saturating clipping effect

    • @jamesorvis_mixhackers
      @jamesorvis_mixhackers 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      With anything to do with clipping, hot signals etc it’s a matter of taste and experimentation. You will know if it’s sounding bad cause the clipping or drive will ruin the sound or loss of bass etc. give it a go, often tickling the red for a drum buss gets me all goopy 😂

    • @jamesorvis_mixhackers
      @jamesorvis_mixhackers 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That’s your own perspective, to be completely honest with you this amplifies the fun I have. I love programming, sound design, mixing etc so none of that is an issue for me. You will see as this video series progresses how performable this setup is once a track is fully programmed; it’s also super flexible, I can work just on the machines, not even use Ableton until the very end, I can pick and choose which machine to focus on, mix and match them and in a live setting and go completely off piste if I wish. Been doing this 15 years and I’ve tried many different ways, hands down this is the setup that I’ve been having the most fun, creating the best stuff and a setup that makes producing and playing music easier. I agree it all seems very complex but I’ve been building skills and stacking techniques to get to this point

      @@jamesorvis_mixhackers right on. For me, it's a hobby primarily. It's strictly for fun and if none other than myself care to listen to what I'm trying to bang out, I'm still quite happy doing it.

      Please try to not take it so personally; a lot of it (the original comment) comes from my own resentment and realization that *I will need* to embrace accepting software in my own setup, eventually... And I did say it does sound much better; processing & effects via software makes A LOT of sense, especially considering my dream setup will fit within a briefcase! I have resisted music production ( / producing music in) software for a very long time; probably from a, very poorly informed, sense of principle! Fun / ironic fact: I absolutely /love/ DJing with software. There is ZER0 instruction on *starting* down this hybrid road, which kinda pisses me off, and maybe, along with you making it look soooo very easy, and powerful... led to my nasty little quip. But that's my own insecurity! So, if I offended you, *I AM SORRY*

      @@avhdb3 Hey no worries at all :) Sorry for my long winded reply to try and validate my approach. Its taken me about 5 years to let Ableton back into my live setup haha In my last band me and the vocalist had debates pre gig about even just bringing a laptop onstage to process vocals!! I was super dawless for a bit, but you gotta use what works for what you are trying to achieve, you can definitely do all this dawless for sure and I have done with much success as James Orvis and Druum & Melatron playing between DJ's at clubs. The way I do things now is a little over the top and wouldnt advise most to jump straight in with a similar setup, but hopefully i can offer inspiration and tuition along the way. Hope your having a good week!

    I don't understand how you can work lite this. Just put it down in a tracker. Use an Amiga from 1990 and it will be easier. Effects later.

      Sometimes I think why bother at all, I could just play on CDJs or use AI to write bangers for me 😂

      @@jamesorvis_mixhackers Im so much a newb and can't express how impressed I am with my just arrived DT2. I've been running on Model:Samples for a while and the upgrade is quite intuitive and so welcome to my developing workflow. I'll keep both Elektron machines, my Modal Cobalt and hopefully find a groove to fit within. I did not expect to be this impressed for Digitakt II until I opened the box and plugged in this evening. No DAW....just trying to find a place with some recommended hardware.

      I bought as soon as they were announced mainly to make a mastery course as I was already planning the mk1 course. I’m massively impressed with it and it’s a great uodgrade for sure. Few bugs here and there but they will be ironed out soon hopefully

      Currently filming the Digitakt course but this is definitely on the cards. I’m going to make some packs that are not just samples but also contain parameter data and performance macros as well, so il be offering samples, presets and kit packs 🙏 check my website for sample packs, I have a couple that you can load onto the Digitakt 2 jamesorvis.com
