India has nearly 700 languages, out of which the Indian constitution recognise 22 language as official language. They are as following

I just travelled to North India for a week, I speak only very little Hindi. Not even a 5% of people I met know to speak or understand English. Some point of time we get frustrated(I was finding difficult to inform taxi guy where I am - i mean my location).
Learning or speaking Hindi definitely not a mistake or problem for us, but for that matter we cannot accept Hindi as our National language.
