- In this video we take a deep dive into the chord chart of the classic jazz tune “Misty”. We make sure that we understand all of the chords and I give you a really nice, straightforward way of improvising through this gorgeous tune. I hope that you find it useful and please let me know what you think.
Note: When editing I noticed that in the B section, in the last two bars I’d written Root 357 3 and in fact played R 357 R so just to let you know. In fact either option would work but I don’t like inaccuracies!
It would probably help you if you understand major 251’s which you can find here: • Improvising over the 2...
And minor 251’s which you can find here: • How to improvise over ...
And knowing about the incredibly beautiful harmonic minor scale will help too: • Harmonic minors scales...

Margaret thank you so much, I really do appreciate your support 🎷🎷😎😎🤝🤝
Your Misty video has been sooo helpful. Thank you so much !!
Thank you Margaret, I’m delighted to hear that and thank you for saying so, you’ve made my day 🤝🤝😎😎🎷🎷
I like your simple approach. I just picked up sax 3 years ago and improv was high on my agenda but have been struggling with it and have really been going nowhere with it. I get the concept and have a fundamental understanding of chords and how to read them based on my piano background. I like how you don’t complicate it. Either play the chord structure or play the scale (or a minor addition to either). The lead-ins, turn-arounds and all that other stuff comes later.
What I do struggle with currently is how to recognize chord patterns. For example, this piece is in the key of C. This is how I would read the chord sequence in the first 3 measures: Cmaj7 - root position followed by G-7, C7 then Fmaj7. My brain says G is the 5th of C followed by C then F so the chord pattern should be 1, 5,1,4 with the 5 being a minor. With that logic and with G being a minor, I’d then be tempted to play an actual G minor scale but of course it wouldn’t sound correct. I would eventually get frustrated and quit.
However I appreciate how you stick to a piece that is dominated with 2-5-1s and help us to recognize these patterns: if you see a minor 7, followed by a dominant then followed by a major7 then it is likely a 2-5-1 and that the minor is the Dorian of the 1, so play accordingly. Maybe you already have videos of it, but if not, could you do videos of other popular chord changes, how to recognize them, pick out a piece that is dominated with them and follow the format you did in this video? I feel I have overcome a major hurdle thanks to this video. Thank you, Lynden! 😊
Wow, that’s so gratifying to hear Rob, thank you for saying that and I’m so happy that this is useful to you. I will definitely be making more chord progression videos. Thanks again 🤩🤝😎😎🎷🎷
So, so helpful! I'm working on Misty (on tenor) right now, and this is just what I need. Thank you!!
I'm so glad! The tenor version is in production 🎷🎷🤝🤝😎😃

Magnifique lyden. Bravo cette improvisation de Misty.
Vincent thank you so much 🤝🤝🎷🎷😎😎
The solo is beautiful and the strategy suggested to achieve it is excellent. But what to do when there are multiple tonal centers like in Satin doll?
Hi there Lucian and thanks for the question. You would just follow the chords and change key as necessary 🎷🎷🤝🤝😎😎
Gracias Maestro le deseo mucho éxito y por favor continúe haciendo esto con otros Standars.. Felicidades para usted y familia
Thank you so much Carlos 🤝🤝😎😎🎷🎷
Thanks.
You're welcome! 😎😎🤝🤝🤝🎷🎷
Thanks for another great lesson. Your tone is so lovely I wonder if even it matters what the chord tones are!
Aw Chip that’s really nice of you to say, thank you 🤝🤝🎷🎷😎😎
@@lyndenblades Where, or in what volume of Session Band is the track for Misty?

Thanks Kooky, yes it certainly not the only way 👍👍🎷🎷😎😎🤝🤝
@@lyndenblades yes billions of possibilities :)
@@kooky74 I’m aiming to give a straightforward approach that gives confidence and helps people understand the chords, then they can develop ideas from that foundation 🎷🎷
@@lyndenblades ho yes and I love your approach. That is why I'm watching all your videos. My approach is not the thruth and I teach the harmony to my soon (8 yo). And I'm happy to find another way of analyse. Thx ;)
@@kooky74 thank you so much and all the best to your son 🎷🎷🤝🤝😎😎

@@lyndenblades Don’t force DJ sax video we spoke about!
Why do you need a tenor version? The chords are transposed already. Or am I smoking something?
@@Riffer19 I was just trying to get more tenor sax on the channel!
