Yes they either were never real or they aren't in the word, dying to self, prayer or worship. I had the holy spirit for years, and bared some fruit, but I was in darkness and never in the word. Now everything is different. He is able.
The reason is because they just displaying the gift of tongues as a batch but not using it. But of course , the more you speak in tongues the more temptations, test and trial you will encounter, reason? Because the Holy Spirit is shaping us into God's character.

And the church is weaker today for it. The Lord said to study for approval, not to pick a side that you agree with and just learn all about that. You get given a gift, you don't earn it, which is why it's a gift and not payment. So you can "prefer" someone rather showing the fruit of the Spirit than having a gift given by the Spirit of GOD. Both are shown or demonstrated with humility and appreciation not pride. This is how you distinguish between a true gift and a fake made-up gift.
If you see someone "speak in tongues" and it doesnt line up with biblical commands and examples of the gift, you can know right away, it is not of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the Author of the Bible.
It's not even a matter of I prefer that you have the fruit of the Spirit, other than the gifts. Most christian believe the gifts are proof of your relationship with the Spirit. But is by the fruit that we recognize if the tree is good or not. If you are connected with Christ, the true wine, and you have no fruits, you are only good for the fire, a dry branch. If the Holy Spirit can't generate It's fruits in you, which is the character of Jesus. You are just using up the soil, and are about to be cut down.

He (Jesus) only said what he said because he knew that the Pharisees knew that he could only do what he was doing with God working through him. They knew, but they were jealous. There certainly are those who are unaware that their “tongue-speaking” Is not from the spirit. But they are doing it in faith which I honestly think God finds amazing even if he isn’t the one who initiated it. They just believe, it doesn’t matter what they see, they just believe that the gifts are theirs. I personally do not speak in tongues yet because God has not given that gift to me it would seem. You can perform many signs and wonders but still never truly know God. Of course, it isn’t you but the Holy Spirit testifying through you about the father. If you don’t love, you don’t know God. But if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.
Easy. 1. We have all met this person that is described by this courageous pastor. 2. God’s Word had a passage that describes all this. “Lord, have we not cast out demons in Your Name?” Etc. And the Lord answered, Depart from me. I never knew you.” So the Bible describes precisely the people this pastor is describing.
If we do not have the gifts of the Spirit, how we will have “word of wisdom”, “word of Knowledge”, “faith” according to 1 Corinthians 12:8&9 ? How we will understand The Word of God which is Holy Bible ? How we will put our trust on The Blessed Holy Trinitarian God of The Holy Bible ? How we will put our trust on the Lord Jesus Christ Who came in flesh, died, buried & resurrected bodily on the third day [the gospel - the good news] ?
He's not emphasizing that we shouldn't operate in the gifts, but 1st Corinthians 13 says clearly that if we do all these things without love there's no gain.
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the gifts and you should wrestle in prayer to receive them, but keep in mind that the most important thing is to know God, and you know that you have come to know God if you keep his commands, and this is his command: that we believe on the name of his son Jesus Christ, and that we love one another as he gave commandment. Whoever does not love does not know God because God is love. So recognize that love is the most important aspect of God’s teaching to us. Everything else comes from love. Faith, obedience, relationship, fruit. It all comes from love.

Matthew 7 is an interesting chapter. Nobody is doing those things at this point and haven't since last apostle died. By apostle I mean one of the 12.
