Taran Van Hemert I like the Colorado flag! I may be personally biased because I live there but the design is pretty neat with the large ‘C’ and the sun. I like Colorado’s flag.
It kind of reminds me of a sports logo or something. But definitely one of the better ones. That's a B+ for me. (Speaking of logos, there is a flag (Pocatello) with an actual copyrighted logo and it is a monstrosity. If I had to grade it, it would be a dropout.)
A flag shouldn't have any words on it as grey said, but it also should pass additional tests to be a good, useful, flag design. 1) Flag pole test: whether you can easily see and identify the flag if it was flapping in the wind 25 to 50 feet above you. So these blue flags with detailed seals in the middle would mostly fail, as you can't really see most of that from that far away. 2) The 6 year old test: can a 6 year old draw the flag. Some of these state flags a child would struggle to draw, even with the flag in front of them.
So does Brazil get an F too? The 6-year-old test I mean - is a 6-year-old is gonna be able to recreate the entire southern sky and remember to write Ordem e Progresso across the equator?
@@megarockman The 6-year-old test is not to see if the child can fully replicate the flag, it's just to see if the child can draw it. So if the child draws the triangle, the circle and the white strip crossing the circle it's A+ right away. No need for Ordem e Progresso or correctly positioning the stars.

You could put the Maryland flag in a lineup with every other flag from every nation and state in the world and ask a blind man to pick the Maryland flag out and 11 out of 10 times he will point right at it and say "Well that there's the Maryland flag".
100% agree, New Mexico's is outstanding, especially compared to the shit that it's up against. But I think a special exception should be made for California. Yes, words on flags are often bad, but in California's case there's something about the anachronistic "California Republic" that I like. Yes, maybe the flag would be better without the words, but I don't think in this case they're enough to make it a bad flag, and I don't think they necessarily subtract so much from the other very cool elements.
This was amazing. I paused the video and looked at all the state flags, and immediately knew he was talking about New Mexico. There's a great TED talk about flag design.

That pause at the end was great
but you guys didn't mention how texas' flag looks like a Chilean flag. i mean, they're identical. except ours is better ;)
I'll assume you're Chilean, in which case I agree with you; the Chilean flag does look better than the Texas flag. It's also quite a bit older, which always seems to surprise Texans...
@@rjfaber1991 I am, in deed, Chilean. :)
This is really well made and animated :)
