Lay is huge in China. He's in the top 3 artists in China. He was also the Communist Youth League Ambassador of China and EXO was Korea's nations pick. So of course, Lay in EXO is unlike other groups. With the political issues between the 2 countries, this could be sensitive. However, we know they are in close contact Lay has recently talked about his conversation with Sehun to the fans at his concert/shows. They do meet up but they just don't share the pictures. DFTF was a special album for the fans during the enlistment period and not an official comeback. We hope that they will reunite again for an album especially since Lay now has a company in Korea.

Btw that info about Baekhyun being the only soloist to sell a million copies or over a million copies is wrong and I wish it wasn't in there. Baekhyun is the first soloist to do it after 19 years since Kim Gun Mo did it in 2001.

One of the main reasons why Suho was a trainee for 7 years was because he originally started out training to be a member of SM's legendary second-generation group, SHINee. However, right before SHINee was to debut in 2008, Suho injured his knee and he couldn't train for their debut showcase, so SM decided to debut SHINee without him. He ended up having to wait 4 more years before he debuted as the leader of EXO. But, by all accounts, this worked out for the best because he became the leader, and as the other EXO members say, he was born to be a leader. If he had stayed a member of SHINee he never would have become a leader, because Onew -- who is the leader of SHINee -- is 2 years older than Suho, and at the time of SHINee's debut it was pretty much a given that the oldest member would automatically be the leader. However, 4 years later when EXO debuted, the rules within the industry had kind of changed and it was no longer a hard and fast rule that the oldest would be the leader. Case in point, Xiumin is the oldest EXO member and, yet, Suho became the leader.
Being a trainee for 7 years isn't that uncommon. If you start to really look into it, you will find a lot of Idols who have trained for a very long time before they debuted. However, it all depends on how talented someone is or how much experience they have had before becoming a trainee as to how long they train. Some idols only train for a few weeks or a few months, whereas others could take years and they may be on the verge of giving up when the company finally decides they are ready to debut. And some trainees may never debut and end up leaving the company or industry. Unfortunately, just because you are a trainee doesn't guarantee you will debut. A lot of it is pure talent and luck combined with sheer dedication.
For example, Kai tained for 6 years before he debuted and Johnny from NCT trained for 9 years. Although, Johnny trained for 9 years because he was only a trainee part time. Johnny's parents only allowed him to spend summers in Korea, so he could only train for about 3 months when he was on summer break from school. Therefore, although Johnny was a trainee for 9 years, his trainee period, compared to other idols who trained full-time, was actually only about 3 years.

- Chanyeol: Participated in a musical while enlisted; the making-of footage for the show is great, you can see how shocked the producers & staff were that a rapper was such a good singer^.^
- Chen: Starred in a South Korean production of In The Heights; at one point Lin-Manuel Miranda had Chen's promo shot for the show as his phonecase?!
- Baekhyun: Starred in a South Korean production of Singing in the Rain~~~
- D.O: Surprisingly has also only done one musical so far; it was a musical he took part in during his military service, alongside Xiumin
- Xiumin: starred in a SM hologram musical called School OZ with Suho, and then later went on to perform in two musicals while he was in the military, one of these musicals let him also perform alongside D.O^.^ Xiumin then starred in the Korean production of Hadestown almost immediately after his enlistment ended!
- Suho: The member with the most experience in musical theater~ He was in School OZ (the SM hologram musical) with Xiumin, but then he booked the lead role in The Last Kiss and The Man Who Laughs back-to-back, two of the most expensive and most anticipated musicals of the season in South Korea. He auditioned for both, just hoping to maybe get one, and ended up booking both!~ The Man Who Laughs and Suho's performance went over so well that they did a few encore shows~ And not too long ago he just finished his run as the lead in Mozart!, another highly anticipated musical^.^
As you saw, EXO's fan color is "Cosmic Latte" (greyish-tan), i.e. the color of coffee, which is why it has the word latte in the name. Cosmic Latte is said to be the color that is created when you combine all the colors of the stars together. In real life, some stars emit a red light, some are white, some are blue, some are yellow, etc. depending on what they are made out of or the distance from Earth, etc, so when you put all those colors together, you get the color of "cosmic latte." (As otherworldly beings, even EXO's official color is linked to the group's concept.) However -- as we see introduced in EXO's "Power" MV -- each of the 9 EXO members also have their own official color, which is why EXO's lightstick was one of the first to be able to change multiple colors.

Yes, you will discover that all the members of EXO -- and most idols in general -- are actors, and all of them have starred in K-dramas and movies and/or are stage actors. Promoting as a group only takes up a few weeks a year -- on average Kpop Idols only promote their latest comeback on music shows and attend variety shows or do interviews, etc. to promote their newest comeback for about 2 weeks -- so in order to fill their time and continue to make money, all Idols have side projects, which means most idols also spend time as TV and movie actors, musical stage actors, models, Radio DJs, authors, music producers, songwriters, regular/main cast members on variety shows, etc. Their side projects also are part of their cross promotions as idols. Someone who doesn't know them may watch them in a drama or movie or see them promoting their favorite brand or product, etc., which leads to them discovering their group and music, or the person may be a fan of them as a singer and this makes them want to watch their movie or drama, etc. It's all about getting their name and face out there in as many ways as possible in order to drive sales and viewership of everything they are involved in.
Chen has 2 kids in the order he always wanted a girl first and a boy second. Chanyeol is friends with Joohoney.
Kai, Taemin and Jimin attended the same dance school so that is how Jimin knows both of them and is friends with them both. there is a story one of them talked once about a time they had to pick Jimin up for something, but I don't remember all of it.

he's currently an inactive member of exo and more focused on his solo stuff. He's having an album comeback soon and movie to be release this year
Unfortunately, the political climate between Korea and China was only a little better for a short time. However, since this guide was made, China's Idol culture has become even more restrictive after the election of their new president. Plus, as you may know, Lay left SM Entertainment in 2022 -- when his contract was up after 10 years -- but he has made it clear that he hasn't left EXO. Although there are still several obstacles in his way to being able to work with EXO. Therefore, we may never get to see Lay working in person with the rest of EXO again, but we can always hope.
However, one good sign is that Super Junior's Chinese member Zhoumi, who has also been restricted from being able to work with Super Junior for the past 6 years or so, was actually back in Korea for several months last year and he released a new song with one of his Korean Super Junior members and the song was in both Korean and Mandarin and he even did promotions and appeared on Korean programs while he was there.
As mentioned, Lay's hiatus from EXO is not something he has chosen, but it's something that has sort of been forced upon him by the government.
When China first began cracking down on their citizens working in Korea around 2016 -- as a political protest over South Korea's alignment with the U.S. and China's support of North Korea, etc. -- there were rumors that the Chinese government was threatening to revoke the citizenship of any mainland native Chinese person who continued to do business with a Korean company and lived outside of China. This rule would have prevented Idols, such as Lay, from visiting family and doing business in China, etc. The only way for them to avoid this from happening was for them to come back to China right away and stop doing business with their Korean companies. I don't know if this was really true or if it was just a rumor, but that is what I heard. Which would explain why some Chinese Idols don't feel any pressure to stop working in Korea because they have nothing to lose if they don't have family or a life in China or they aren't mainland Chinese citizens, etc.
Yes, there are lots of Chinese Idols still working in Korea. However, these idols don't have the connections to the Chinese government the way Lay and other idols do. Many of those Chinese idols' careers don't depend on being able to promote or live in China and many Chinese idols don't have close family living in mainland China or they are not from mainland China, which is why they have more immunity from the restrictions placed on Chinese citizens. For example, NCT-Dream's Chinese members don't work very much in China and most of WayV's members are not from mainland China. That is also why SM has created Label V in order to make it possible for WayV to release music in China and its why WayV distances themselves from NCT whenever they promote in China.
Lay's whole career is tied to being able to work and live in China and he is closely connected to the Chinese government, so he has to tread lightly when it comes to how he conducts himself and who he chooses to associate with, etc. He can't afford to be blacklisted in the Chinese entertainment industry. For a long time, Lay was even discouraged from mentioning EXO by name in TV shows and interviews, but he always finds subtle ways to make it clear that being a member of EXO, and his EXO brothers, are always very important to him.
You should check out Lay's official lyric video for his song "Jiu," a song on his East album, which was released after he announced his departure from SM. This song is evidence that he has not left EXO and that he still considers himself part of the group, as every word of the song is a tribute to EXO. I have also read that on Webo (the Chinese internet server) he mentioned how he was working out a deal with SM that could possibly allow him to still continue to do projects with EXO in the future. (I mean it's possible, Taecyeon from 2PM left JYP Entertainment, but he worked out a deal with his new company that has allowed him to continue activities with 2PM. And even more encouraging is the fact that Girls' Generation had a comeback as a full group in 2022 even though 3 members left SM more than 5 years ago.) I mean, SM has been supporting Lay in everything he has been doing so far, including endorsing him when he started his trainee company Chromosome. And I don't think there is any bad blood or uneasy feelings between Lay and SM, so anything is possible.

It still feels weird seeing people discovering EXO now,as I've been fan since predebut in 2011 when they were announcing the members. Not to be a prick or trying to be rude but in kpop, the distinction between positions actually matters A LOT. "Main" positions always have the best technique in the group(in singing, dancing or rapping), therefore they usually carried the most weight in each respective job.
Yes they're all singers & can sing well. BUT u can't expect a lead vocalist like Suho(for example) to do as well as ChenBaekSoo in doing all the difficult vocals in their songs. It's the reason why they're the main vocals.
Not trying to undermine their talents bcus they're talented asf. But it's not smthing that people can't deny that they don't have the same equal level in skills. Which what created those distinctions. If they're not so important, they'd not have made those positions in the first place.
I understand that’s important especially when starting a group to establish positions. I more so meant as of rn to me bc I pretty much know for the most part where everyone stands with their positions and they’ve all grown so much. So I don’t feel the need to have to distinguish them that way in my head personally. Maybe if I was just learning a group it would be more important to know. Of course there were some new things I learned about them and their positions in the guide which is helpful tho. Idk if that makes sense
