    Great video, a different view of the bush off the beaten track.
    I grew up in Gwalia (‘71-‘79, I’m 57 now). This whole area was my playground. The house we lived in is still occupied. The area has changed quite a bit over the years by the looks of it. Many old shanties have been removed for scrap, a bunch moved to appeal to the tourist crowd, and also to make way for the mine operations. It looks much emptier.
    The original mine closed in 1963 and remained mostly dormant until the 1980s (after we left). The open cut mine (24:53) has completely consumed the original mine site, expanded considerably starting in the 80s. What’s not seen is the underground workings: the mine descends underground for about 1800m or more. It’s the deepest gold mine in Australia, and the deepest in the world that utilizes full size trucks (60-tonne Capco as seen here) all the way to the bottom. A round-trip down and back is 4-5 hours. Last I read, there’s enough gold in the mine to last at least into the 2030s.

      I really get a kick when I receive feedback and comments like this from people who been there/lived there/ know the background of some of these places. I bet you could tell some stories of Friday and Saturday nights from the front bar at the State Hotel.
      Good times.
      Thanks for taking the time to comment.

      @@mongreldogproductions You’re welcome!
      The hotel closed when the mine did, in ‘63. For many years it also was dormant, and even faced the possibility of being torn down. Western Mining Co. occupied it as offices for a time. It was saved, along with many of the shanties and other historical buildings, by an American couple, Don and Donna Reid, who lived in and restored the Hoover House. Don was a geologist in the mining business. Donna was especially instrumental in keeping the old houses from being scrapped; as an artist, she sketched many of the buildings. She restored the little train, “Ken,” up near the museum. The headframe also almost meant for scrap but was relocated to its present spot, later rebuilt to keep that history alive. It’s the only wooden headframe left in Australia, as far as I know. The hotel is occasionally opened to visitors but is largely not open to the public. The only time I saw the inside was when it was briefly used to hold church services, oddly enough. My first exposure to religion.
      The Reid’s later moved to SA. Don passed last year, but Donna is still going strong.

    • @vinsgraphics
      @vinsgraphics 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      PS. The State Hotel was the very first government-built hotel in Western Australia, intended to put a stop to the “sly-grog” shanties popping up all over when the town and mine got started, around 1898-1901.
