Ranger is one of those classes whose implementation in D&D never quite lives up to its namesake. It's the melee class I most want to like but never play because its mechanics are so underwhelming.
@@HenriFaust I feel like they need to revamp Ranger for sure. Maybe make them specify in ranged over melee but still have solid melee options in a subclass. Kinda like a reverse Barbarian.
I love my Dire Raven Rogue/Ranger. Using the Dire Raven to get advantage to follow up with a sneak attack bow for high damage is so fun. Also using alchemy to craft elixirs for the raven is so good!
Late reply, but multiclassing at level 4, as level three is the requirement for beast master, and level four unlocks sneak attack. Until you have the dire raven, you can use summon familiar: Raven and use rend vision to give you advantage on regular attacks@@mcl_official20XX

Tried rogue, wasn’t feeling it, leaning towards Ranger and this video has been a tremendous help! Always loved Rangers. Played a Ranger in Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2
I love running 5 Ranger and 7 Bard. You have to tweak your starting abilities to give you more charisma for the bard spells, at he expense of wisdom, but as I'm the talker more charisma is natural. Pretty much gives you everything in and out of combat, as the Ranger spells I have are mostly cast out of combat, like Longstrider or enhanced jump, or some healing spells in combat. So I don't need much wisdom. And the charisma is for the bard spells. I also love playing the instruments, it's just a cool build.
"Remember, Gloomstalker only gets an extra free attack on the first turn of combat." This isn't an issue if the first turn of combat is also the last turn of combat.
Honestly, I tried that I found it very annoying that the power in this build is mostly in the first turn, and catching enemies by surprise... Playing in coop I find this build most interesting features mostly useless, especially if you're going for story and dialogs.
i love rangers. they don't get as many cool magic stuff, but I feel like them scaling off of dex really well, makes it quite easy to be quite balanced in all other stats as well
Rolling my main with a two weapon fighting, dual-wield, hunter, with two rapiers and I am very happy with the result. Multi-classed 3 in rogue for the second bonus action, for extra damage, does wonders on single targets.
Did this with my last pen and paper character. There were a lot of complaints that I was too OP from some of the newer players at our table that didn't realize the ranger can storm out of the gate and then fall off at higher levels. Was a lot of fun though!
I’m excited for my link role play. I’m probably gonna multi class him as fighter and ranger. Hunter and champion, but beast master with wolf is giving twilight Princess vibes and that’s my favorite Zelda game
I've just hit level 5 with my human Beast Master Ranger. Not only can he summon an Animal Companion but should they perish he can Summon Familiar as well, meaning the party is rarely down an extra attacker. Favorite companion is the Dire Raven- their Blind attack can make difficult foes much easier to hit. He also serves as the party's Rogue, so I don't feel pressured to have Astarion constantly around.
Yeah! Exactly. I find all animals and familiars useful. Dire raven and raven familiar scouting duo, pecking eyes and shooting feathers 😂 or dire wolf pack tactics + rat heel biter or a cat sound alarm 😁
I'm surprised Gloomstalker Assassin didn't get a shout out, it takes a little bit of prep before combat but that build can 1TKO several enemies during surprise rounds.
The poisoner's gloves, thorn blade, and hunter's mark can vastly improve your ranger's utility, particularly in the form of interrupting concentration and debuffing enemies. I typically prefer beast master for an additional body on the field and the utility of spiderweb and the boar's charge. I tend to have my ranger focus down a powerful enemy and use the boar or spider to keep enemies off of him. There are a half dozen poison based items that can stack particularly khaga's necklace and the poisoner's cloak which can allow you to indefinitely apply poison and gain poison damage on all weapon attacks. This offers more damage obviously but also the ability to spread status and additional chances to break concentration. strange conduit ring is an excellent item in tandem with hunter's mark as it is nearly always active on my ranger, plus it might still work when "hunt complete" is active but I'm honestly not certain of that. Additionally a few levels of druid can offer access to low level poison based spells and spores to improve weapon damage.... though im fairly certain necro damage is the most commonly resisted type.
Thanks for this great guide. I am playing a female Half Elf Ranger as my first play through. I have just gone for pure Beast Master, and mostly use a Bear as my companion. The Bears goad ability is great if you cannot get the bear within striking distance of an enemy. I am not sure which class I will try next.
I think elves get the perception proficiency regardless of sub race? Cause drow get it too. So the difference for wood elves vs high elves is a cantrip vs additional move speed and stealth proficiency.
I'm salty the swarm ranger isn't in the game would have been so fun to be a vampire swarm ranger with a swarm of bats as your swarm (and i highly suggest you play as that in DnD in general it's really fun especially if you run into a mind flare and take a tadpole to use on yourself after you become a vampire then you immediately become as powerful as an elder vampire like struad. And depending on what your dm says you can keep the mind flare powers after you remove the tadpole from your skull)
The thing about the Ranger's versatility is that you can do some weird stuff and it still works. Like my heavy armor wearing, polearm wielding Gloomstalker/Paladin. What I lose on stealth I gain by using my other two attacks on the first turn to smite. With some luck, you can take two squishier enemies out right away, and turn the action economy in your favor.
So far, I've had a lot of fun with a strength based heavy armor dueling ranger, focus strength and wisdom with okay con, pick up longstrider, enhanced jump and good berry as 1st level spells. On a personal note I don't think I'll ever play without longstrider unless they patch it, it's no spell slot cost +10ft movement for the whole party, which is fantastic. The rhythm I got into was using goodberries to activate The Whispering Promise ring that gives you the effect of bless for 2 turns when you heal, GB is a bonus action in combat to eat. Activating the bless, also activated Diadem of Arcane Synergy, which adds your wisdom to your weapon damage for 2 turns when you apply a condition on a creature. When pumped up swing were dealing 1d8+13 damage on first swing and potentially 2d8+13 on the second, with Colossus Slayer. I had +6 str and +4 wisdom at that point level 9 I think, got a +2 str pot in moon rise I think. Went tiefling and had resistance to fire, cold and poison, which was helpful, eventually got two item pieces for acid and electric resistance so the most common elemental damage types were less scary.
I can’t recommend Beastmaster until they fix the wolf’s and other pet’s pathing. It is super tedious and annoying to have to make your wolf jump over lots of terrain that is otherwise perfectly walkable by your humanoid companions. My wolf would constantly end up half a map away from the party without constant micromanagement and then be MIA when battles happened. Yes you can resummon him but it wastes an action and spellslot each time. The raven familiar has less issue keeping up, but the bigger pets just aren’t worth the hassle. It’s a shame because I love the flavor of a Beastmaster style ranger and the pets are surprisingly durable and have good utility in combat. The wolf did good damage and soaked up a lot of action economy from the the enemies. You can also use them to set up advantage for your melee frontline if you only run one melee frontline companion in your party composition. I hope Larian gets around to either shrinking the pathing hitboxes of these pets and/or improving the AI so that they climb ladders properly and jump when they need to so that they keep up with your party.
My current playthrough I'm doing 2 level dip Fighter to get action surge, 3 level dip in Assassin Rogue for the crit on surprised foes, and then the rest in gloomstalker ranger so that first round of combat I can just machine gun down folks with the extra attack and action surge and since I'm a sneaky type get the drop and crit for 6 attacks with one of those crits a sneak attack. It's a bit of a slow crawl that's not gonna be fully online until level 10, but the journey is by no means difficult. Each level so far as been such a fun gain in abilities. Just no extra attack for a while which kinda sucks.
It took a lot of fiddling to find out what i wanted to be class wise. Druid was close but Ranger nailed it. Really like archery and really like animals so clicked right away.
Have not tested this but in tabletop action surge would apply to the dread ambusher feature allowing for two enhanced attacks on the opening of combat. I run this on my gloomstalker in tabletop and found it more impactful than the classic levels of assassin everyone loves though you should probably still take thos eventually
Im usually a Paladin player as its my main class in most games such as WoW, Neverwinter Nights, and even now Baldur's Gate III (my paladin is a halberdier Drow with Oath of the Ancients). But the Ranger has always been like a 2nd class for me going back to the original Neverwinter Nights in the 2000s. With the Ranger Knight, its intrigued me alot but...I wanna create a Ranger that specializes with an axe and shield instead of the usual dual wielding. On NWN 2, I attempted (and failed) to create my emphasis of what an Ancient Paladin would have been like (a first paladin to exist...much like Bayak of Assassin's Creed Origins was the first Assassin of the Assassin Brotherhood...wasn't an assassin in the usual sense but was the one that started it all) and i theorized that a Ranger would be a good base class but didn't quite get the multi-classing down to where it could work and not do more harm than good. ANYWAYS!! Seeing the Ranger Knight made me realize I could attempt to recreate this. Almost give this creation a more....viking like feel to it as well without deviating into the Barbarian class territory. This video does give some ideas to be honest on my concept.
Question, Probably this won't be answered but worth a shot. What's the better way to multiclass: A,4 level Trickery Cleric and 8 level of Hunter or Gloomstalker Ranger - just missing out on Ranger Level 3 spells like Lightning Arrow, or B, Level 9 Ranger with level 3 Clerick missing out on Level 2 Clecrick Spells? Trying to multiclass Shadowheart into a range Supportive character in a way that she can still pack a punch and not only buff. Any suggestions between these two or perhaps something completely different? Cheers and thanks in advance :) Love the guides! Been already watching them since DOS2.
I played a gloomstalker/assassin on my first play through and it was a ton of fun. Once you’re set up and get Sharpshooter you can take out bosses on the first round and pick dc30 locks with not too much trouble. I found hail of thorns pretty useless though, especially after you get extra attack. The aoe is so small that you almost can never hit more than one enemy with it, and since it counts as a spell and not a weapon attack, you’re blocked out of using your extra attack after you cast it. Idk if this is how it’s supposed to work (ensnaring strike let’s you extra attack), but unless it changes, I wouldn’t recommend taking it
I used the Harold xbow for most of it, then replaced it with a legendary longbow I found towards the end. And yeah, dual wielding is great with Sharpshooter and hand xbows. It probably would’ve done more damage than what I did. If you start with 17 dex and use Auntie Ethel’s hair for dex, you can get to 20 dex with only 1 Ability Improvement feat, which could give you more flexibility to invest another feat into dual wielding if you wanted to go that route. But, in the end, do what sounds fun and what fits your character from a role playing standpoint too! You don’t need the most optimized build to win fights easily.
I would also wanna talk about going ranger (gloom stalker) 8 levels, fighter 2 levels and rogue 2 level Or you can throw these around in levels - ranger (gloom stalker) 5 levels, fighter (battle master) 6 levels and rogue 1 level. Or Gloom Stalker 3 levels, one level rogue, (and/or 4 levels with 0 rogue) with Battle Master 8 levels Or 3 levels Gloom stalker, fighter (battle master) 6 levels, and rogue (thief) 3 levels. Action surge is really powerful and should not be ignored as well as extra maneuvers and extra fighting style, rogue amazing with extra skill proficiency, hide/dash/disengage as bonus actions AND with extra proficiency and expertise in several skills that is not to be underestimated.
One thing I dislike about the ranger, is that a lot of NPC will run away in fear of some of your beast (Happened to me with bear and wolf). Make no sense to me that people fear your animal, but everyone is perfectly fine with Wyll imp flying around.
I also really like the padded armor like you have in this video for my Ranger with the Dex 18 gloves. I have a skill monkey Beastmaster Ranger with 1 level of rogue/cleric/bard each. I'll probably get two more rogue levels for Thief after Ranger 5 since I use dual hand crossbows.
Great job on the guides! Ah.. gloomstalker. Its actually perfect for dragonborns since they frustrately dont have darkvision... yet. Larian.. WotC.. just wtf? Anyway. Gloomstalkers are perfect as Illithid exterminators, buff your brain with higher Int and strike HARD and zero mercy! Purple dragonborn for hire here 😁
Would a lvl5 gloom stalker and 7 warlock be a good idea,nif you go into charisma andnise pact weapon to make your weapon go off of charisma? Im about to beat my first playthrough as a oathbreaker warlock and wanted to do a second as a stealthy light armored sword user with spells and can summon a cat lmao Sucks the best longsword for warlocks is locked behind killing wylls father.
Going Ranger/Cleric, but need to know. Since you pick your Clerics domain and deity at Level 1, do the domains only allow certain deities or not, and what benefits do they give?????????
Can you make a guide regarding dual wielding? I feel like you need feats to make it work and then it seems really underwhelming, since you can use your offhand only by sacrificing your bonus action. And even then it doesnt really do much damage, it doesnt even come close to great weapons, is that intended?
So from what I understand, you cannot split subclass levels yeah? you couldn't take 7 levels of hunter then switch to gloomstalker for the remaining 5?

Before you do Barbarian, I have a question. The 5e rulebook states that rage and reckless att only work with Str based attacks. In BG3 I see no such ruling. I am asking this, so I can multiclass a wild magic bar into warlock with pact of the blade. (Using Cha as attack mod). Bar 6/War 3/ Fighter 3 Is this possible? I want to call it: the Warbar!
@@beda9beda A good question! I just want a Wild Magic Barbarian with Dark One's Blessing and a high Intimidation for crazy dialogue options. Combined with a few spells for ranged and it might be a chaotic, but very well rounded weirdo.

I love this class but unfortunately it's outclassed by every other class in the game. The fact that u have Natural Explorer and a favored enemy at first is fun and interesting until u find out that u will have THREE of each later on the game.... it just doesn't make any sense. Just by using Gloomb Stalker + Assassin Rogue performs the idea someway of being a guy with a bow how kills from the shadows
Man if only the shifter race was on here I'd build a classic of mine, razorclaw marauder ranger duel wielding hand axes, and having crazy amounts of movement. Gosh the good Ole times
Yeah thats annoying. if you want a good pet, I would suggest to take someone who can summon myrmidons (conjure elemental, but at lvl 6) that would be wizard or druid. they stuck too, but have teleport and fly. )) I even tried playing with 3 water myrmidons, but it's just easy mode 😂
I started off as Beastmaster, but got sick and tired of my wolf being left behind, stuck on ledges, behind gates, etc. As such I respecced to Hunter. As much as I'd love to keep "Lupus", the poor summon pathing just made it frustrating and unplayable.

Rogue is primarily a multiclass paragon. Three to get thief or assassin, class role in other things after that.

Gloomstalker/Assassin is crazy strong especially when u play a dark urge character and get that invisibility cloak

You can also add 3-4 levels of Battlemaster to this mix.

I'm trying out a lore based warlock/ranger build for Wyll focused on pact of the blade/hunter. It's been a lot of fun if a bit weird! 😅

gloom ranger/thief rogue with dual hand crossbows is insanely powerful
So good with the Sharpshooter talent. For some reason it doesn't need two-weapon fighting for full damage bonus on the off-hand.

You can also try multiclassing into a Battlemaster Fighter. His tricks are good with a bow

My current playthrough I'm doing 2 level dip Fighter to get action surge, 3 level dip in Assassin Rogue for the crit on surprised foes, and then the rest in gloomstalker ranger so that first round of combat I can just machine gun down folks with the extra attack and action surge and since I'm a sneaky type get the drop and crit for 6 attacks with one of those crits a sneak attack.
It's a bit of a slow crawl that's not gonna be fully online until level 10, but the journey is by no means difficult. Each level so far as been such a fun gain in abilities. Just no extra attack for a while which kinda sucks.
I want my halfling to be able to ride these companions
It took a lot of fiddling to find out what i wanted to be class wise. Druid was close but Ranger nailed it.
Really like archery and really like animals so clicked right away.
Have not tested this but in tabletop action surge would apply to the dread ambusher feature allowing for two enhanced attacks on the opening of combat. I run this on my gloomstalker in tabletop and found it more impactful than the classic levels of assassin everyone loves though you should probably still take thos eventually
What would that look like at level 12? Gloomstalker 9 and Champion 3?

Im usually a Paladin player as its my main class in most games such as WoW, Neverwinter Nights, and even now Baldur's Gate III (my paladin is a halberdier Drow with Oath of the Ancients). But the Ranger has always been like a 2nd class for me going back to the original Neverwinter Nights in the 2000s. With the Ranger Knight, its intrigued me alot but...I wanna create a Ranger that specializes with an axe and shield instead of the usual dual wielding. On NWN 2, I attempted (and failed) to create my emphasis of what an Ancient Paladin would have been like (a first paladin to exist...much like Bayak of Assassin's Creed Origins was the first Assassin of the Assassin Brotherhood...wasn't an assassin in the usual sense but was the one that started it all) and i theorized that a Ranger would be a good base class but didn't quite get the multi-classing down to where it could work and not do more harm than good. ANYWAYS!! Seeing the Ranger Knight made me realize I could attempt to recreate this. Almost give this creation a more....viking like feel to it as well without deviating into the Barbarian class territory. This video does give some ideas to be honest on my concept.

What's the better way to multiclass:
A,4 level Trickery Cleric and 8 level of Hunter or Gloomstalker Ranger - just missing out on Ranger Level 3 spells like Lightning Arrow,
or
B, Level 9 Ranger with level 3 Clerick missing out on Level 2 Clecrick Spells?
Trying to multiclass Shadowheart into a range Supportive character in a way that she can still pack a punch and not only buff. Any suggestions between these two or perhaps something completely different? Cheers and thanks in advance :)

I love ravens so I made a beast tamer+beast master ranger as my first character lol, a normal raven and a dire raven, lots of blindness
I played a gloomstalker/assassin on my first play through and it was a ton of fun. Once you’re set up and get Sharpshooter you can take out bosses on the first round and pick dc30 locks with not too much trouble. I found hail of thorns pretty useless though, especially after you get extra attack. The aoe is so small that you almost can never hit more than one enemy with it, and since it counts as a spell and not a weapon attack, you’re blocked out of using your extra attack after you cast it. Idk if this is how it’s supposed to work (ensnaring strike let’s you extra attack), but unless it changes, I wouldn’t recommend taking it
Agree. I got better use with spike growth. Even managed to set up a couple of cheese grater scenarios with hunger of hadar.
What range weapon did you use? I know dual xbow is really good but that requires an investment in dual wielding feat
I used the Harold xbow for most of it, then replaced it with a legendary longbow I found towards the end. And yeah, dual wielding is great with Sharpshooter and hand xbows. It probably would’ve done more damage than what I did. If you start with 17 dex and use Auntie Ethel’s hair for dex, you can get to 20 dex with only 1 Ability Improvement feat, which could give you more flexibility to invest another feat into dual wielding if you wanted to go that route. But, in the end, do what sounds fun and what fits your character from a role playing standpoint too! You don’t need the most optimized build to win fights easily.
Surprisingly for TT players in BG3 Beastmaster is way superior to any over subclass and in general one of the best subclasses in the game.

Or you can throw these around in levels - ranger (gloom stalker) 5 levels, fighter (battle master) 6 levels and rogue 1 level.
Or Gloom Stalker 3 levels, one level rogue, (and/or 4 levels with 0 rogue) with Battle Master 8 levels
Or 3 levels Gloom stalker, fighter (battle master) 6 levels, and rogue (thief) 3 levels.
Action surge is really powerful and should not be ignored as well as extra maneuvers and extra fighting style, rogue amazing with extra skill proficiency, hide/dash/disengage as bonus actions AND with extra proficiency and expertise in several skills that is not to be underestimated.

Beastmaster raven bad omen attack always hits and does dmg. The percentage is only for the bad omen status.
Those 7 levels in war domain for gloomstalker is tempting, is that a better option than simply going pure gloomstalker ?
Short answer, Yes. The Alert feat is also very valuable if you don't Ambush people during dialogue 😅
One thing I dislike about the ranger, is that a lot of NPC will run away in fear of some of your beast (Happened to me with bear and wolf). Make no sense to me that people fear your animal, but everyone is perfectly fine with Wyll imp flying around.

I also really like the padded armor like you have in this video for my Ranger with the Dex 18 gloves. I have a skill monkey Beastmaster Ranger with 1 level of rogue/cleric/bard each. I'll probably get two more rogue levels for Thief after Ranger 5 since I use dual hand crossbows.

Can you make a guide regarding dual wielding? I feel like you need feats to make it work and then it seems really underwhelming, since you can use your offhand only by sacrificing your bonus action. And even then it doesnt really do much damage, it doesnt even come close to great weapons, is that intended?

Before you do Barbarian, I have a question. The 5e rulebook states that rage and reckless att only work with Str based attacks. In BG3 I see no such ruling. I am asking this, so I can multiclass a wild magic bar into warlock with pact of the blade. (Using Cha as attack mod). Bar 6/War 3/ Fighter 3

@@beda9beda A good question! I just want a Wild Magic Barbarian with Dark One's Blessing and a high Intimidation for crazy dialogue options. Combined with a few spells for ranged and it might be a chaotic, but very well rounded weirdo.

I love this class but unfortunately it's outclassed by every other class in the game. The fact that u have Natural Explorer and a favored enemy at first is fun and interesting until u find out that u will have THREE of each later on the game.... it just doesn't make any sense. Just by using Gloomb Stalker + Assassin Rogue performs the idea someway of being a guy with a bow how kills from the shadows

Gloomstalker is one of my favorite DPS. You can kill high level bosses on turn 1 !!!!!

Yeah thats annoying. if you want a good pet, I would suggest to take someone who can summon myrmidons (conjure elemental, but at lvl 6) that would be wizard or druid. they stuck too, but have teleport and fly. ))
I even tried playing with 3 water myrmidons, but it's just easy mode 😂

I started off as Beastmaster, but got sick and tired of my wolf being left behind, stuck on ledges, behind gates, etc. As such I respecced to Hunter. As much as I'd love to keep "Lupus", the poor summon pathing just made it frustrating and unplayable.
I think I might make a human ranger and name him Talion
