इलाहाबाद और लखनऊ के क्षेत्रों को जल्द से कुमुक भेजने के लिए यह क्षेत्र सर्वदा उपयुक्त था इसलिए सन् 1801 के बाद अंग्रेजों ने सैनिक छावनी बनाई और सैनिकों के रहने के लिए Tent Camps लगाते गए। इस तरह इसको शुरू में लोकल लोगों ने कैम्पू, कम्पू और अंग्रेजी में Campore लिखा गया। कानपुर की ब्रिटिश कालीन इमारतों पर अब भी Campore सम्बोधन लिखा मिल जाएगा।
