Clamp on Loader Bucket Hitch - Put to use in the Wood Yard

  • On the last Back 40 Live Steam I unboxed a clamp on loader bucket hitch I ordered. Today I give it a try for the 1st time moving a few things around in the wood yard. I needed to bring the trailer out and also the Wolfe Ridge log splitter. I think this tool will really help move things around the wood yard with 'Khaleesi', the Kioti CK2610.
    I'm also getting the Wolfe Ridge ready to head down to the farm where I have a bunch of rounds waiting to be split for Splitter Wars 2020...Get Ready Wood Hounds!

    I've never had mine twisted like that and I move my 4,500lbs equipment trailer and my 6,500lb travel trailer with it. Pushing/pulling makes no difference. The key is to put a 16 inch cheater bar on the clamp handle. I put antisieze compound on the threads to lube it and to keep from gauling the treads.

    I torch cut and drilled a 3/4" hole in my loader years ago to install a 2" hitch ball - I didn't like the clamp on style because of the twisting. I keep the 2" ball in my toolbox behind the seat for quick access. I welded some flat stock on the bolt so I could mount it quickly with no tools. It makes it pretty user-friendly for quick jobs. Nice tractor!!

      Thanks....I thought about that, just drilling out that hole on the bucket a bit bigger to fit the ball hitch...but thought I'd give this a try. Mostly just need it for loading/unloading the splitter and moving it every now & then.

    That things looks awesome. I need one for for moving the log splitter around

      @Back40Firewood  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, that's pretty much the reason I got it. My little D130 had it's limits of where it could move the splitter...lol

    That makes things pretty easy around the wood yard. Good job Dan.👍

      It should help out a lot with moving things around for sure.
      I sent you a email, if you get a chance take a look...let me know. Thanks.👍

    Those bucket receivers have their limits. It will twist going forward too if you have to turn and push up a small hill or upon a trailer but it will work for the purposes you intend to use it for just not flawlessly. I bought pallet forks from titan attachments and it has the receiver built in the pallet fork attachment. My house is on a long tight driveway and it has been a wonderful addition to my tractor to get my trailers turned and parked. The forks have a million uses also.

      @Back40Firewood  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, I think you're right....seems that the splitter is prolly about max load/weight for that to push/pull around. Mainly I just needed it to get the splitter on/off the trailer when I need to. For that it's gonna work great.

    Perfect arrangement for your set up ! Looking forward to splitter wars.

      Yep, should work out for just what I need - to move around the splitter & empty trailer.

    Good video Dan. The clamp on hitch may not be the best but it should be fine for what you’re doing with it.👍

    • @Back40Firewood
      @Back40Firewood  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep...exactly. For what I need it for - loading/unloading the splitter and moving it around it will work great.

    That hitch is handy. Looks like a must have. I like that splitter alot. There are alot of nice splitters out there though.

    I think that clamp hitch will work just fine for you. After a few times pushing the trailer and splitter forward, it will be like second nature. No need to be breaking any speed records moving from the front of the property to the back anyway.

    • @Back40Firewood
      @Back40Firewood  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very true...slow & steady is the way to go. But mostly I just want it for moving the splitter around and loading it on the trailer when I need to.

    I used a 3pt hitch adapter and pick up and move trailers without leaving the seat lol.. the bucket mount ball would be good for pushing for sure especially in tight spots probably better ways to pull though.

    • @Back40Firewood
      @Back40Firewood  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah getting the splitter around the wood yard and mostly up on the trailer when I need to is the BIG plus.

    Take the bucket to my dads. Have him weld a ring around the clamp so it dont slid forward..

    Sorry I missed the Livestream, but my son got home from college right around 9 (8 Central). Had some family time. Everything is shutting down and I am teaching from home next week. Can't wait to see some splitter wars! Will be in the chat room next Friday!!!

      That's ok.. Family time is more important than spending time with TH-cam frends.. Things are shutting down here as well in the NW..

      I thought I saw you in there early, but maybe not. No worries my friend...we'll have plenty of more to attend. And now with this social distancing in place I might have to up it to a few a week so we can all get together and keep our sanity...lol

    Love the little red tractor! Just wondering why it needs a big red triangle on the back, somewhat obscuring your view? Bearing in mind it’s been used off the public highways.

    That hitch think is pretty good but only for real light stuff . I'd be afraid of bending my bucket . Be better off getting a 3 point hitch for the back and you can lift and pull anything that you want to . I know that you're not too good in backing up a trailer but you have to start some where . We all weren't that good at one time . Try backing up a 18ft boat down a boat launch with everyone watching and waiting for you . Now that's pressure . LOL Practice makes perfect and what better place than on your property with no one watching . Nice tractor !

    • @Back40Firewood
      @Back40Firewood  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I agree, it's not ideal for anything too heavy. In fact I think the splitter might be at the limits of it.
      OHH heck no, I wouldn't be backing any boats down...lol...I can only imagine. No thanks! haha

  • @jeremiahhaas567
    @jeremiahhaas567 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a set of clamp on forks... have to be careful on how much weight is on them. I bent and cracked my bucket. But my bucket is also not brand new, its 30 years old.

    • @Back40Firewood
      @Back40Firewood  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep....I don't think this thing is built for too heavy of a load. In fact I think the splitter is about at it's limits.

  • @06goatm6

    @7:20 really shows you the downfall to these style hitches. I was debating on getting one of these for my 4500lb boat. But after watching this, that will be a hard no. Thanks for the video and keep up the good work!

    • @Back40Firewood
      @Back40Firewood  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I think they are most useful for just moving around empty trailers and nothing with too much weight...the splitter was too much for it. It works, but doesn't work great.

  • @JoesFirewoodVideos
    @JoesFirewoodVideos 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    That’s kinda weird looking pushing a trailer like that. WAY better than pushing by hand or backing up. See you at my live stream?

    • @Back40Firewood
      @Back40Firewood  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah it was a bit weird, but you're right. Much easier than by hand.

  • @garny3766
    @garny3766 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Humm...yeah it looks like that mount needs to be wider or at least some “wings” along the cutting edge to resist twisting. But overall it did the job.

    • @Back40Firewood
      @Back40Firewood  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I think for what I need it to do, mostly load/unload the splitter from the trailer it should work fine. I'm gonna try to set up the wood yard where I don't have to move the splitter much so mostly that hitch will be for when I need to haul it in the trailer - which also isn't too much...lol
