RR Crossing Gates Hit Car & Boat, Railroad Switching Short Line Railroad Cincinnati Eastern Railroad

  • Car gets hit hard by a railroad crossing gate while a train was doing some railroad switching. Then a boat breaks off the RR crossing arm. This is my first time to film both new locomotives working together. I caught 1657 on its first a month ago. Cincinnati Eastern Railroad recently got both these GP15-1 units. Today they were working together to switch 4 track Afton Yard near Batavia, Ohio. I filmed the whole thing. If its boring just skip to 12:25 to see the car get hit by the gate. The Boat took the gate out at. A crew quickly arrived to repair the gate while the crew was out of sight switching. This video also shows the new customer construction. Purina is building a HUGE dog food processing plant that will reportedly give 6 car loads a day to CCET. This is going to be a major customer and CCET is really going to be busy. They have already added a score of customers to this line that Norfolk Southern gave up on. This video also shows my dogs playing and has a slide show at the end. Since I filmed this in 4K this long video took 22 hours to download. Filmed September 2, 2021. Thanks for watching!

      The gate was not destroyed. They put it back where it belonged. They are designed to breakaway and easily be reinstalled. What does destroy them is when they break away and end up laying across the tracks. I have run over many of them and they usually end up in 3 pieces.

      they were clearly doing yard/siding switching, probably too many complaints about being blocked for long periods, so they made it close closer to the crossing. then along come covid19 and longer trains than usual, causing overlength switching jobs to trigger the gates again.

    Hello from the UK. AS I have said before, this is where the real activity takes place on the railways, not just watching trains speed by on the main lines. For non-rail fan motorists, I feel their frustration at waiting, seeing a train go over the crossing and then the barriers lift and drop down again. It must feel like the crossing is deliberately taunting them!

    The Crossing Arms should have been rigged to stay up, and someone from the RR directed traffic. The boat didn't hit the Crossing Arm, the Crossing Arm hit the boat. All vehicles struck by the Crossing Arm should be entitled to repair for dents and scratches. I worked 25+ years in industry around heavy rail traffic, this situation was handled poorly, I understand the need for the RR's movements but they need to be mindful of the traffic, it's very confusing to see those crossing arms going up and down incessantly.

    When the traveling switch engine or the local pulls a coustomer, the cars pulled will probably be going to different customers in different areas of the continent. So everything needs to be switched to line them up for the right train, or take to the interchange. I would thing that this short line probably interchanges with one or maybe two railroads. Then the railroad that received the cars at the interchange will switch them out for the correct train.

    Not boring at all! Bring on the switching videos. Reminds me of hanging out and watching the CB&Q switching Edward Hines Lumber in Downers Grove, IL and the small yard there. A few tracks were about 20 feet below the mainline so we got to watch a brakeman ride the cars down the stub tracks after they were cut loose. Mostly boxcars of bricks from what I recall.

    That large building at the Purina plant appears to be one of those automated warehouses with the really high pallet racking. Could be a lot of good business for CEE, covered hoppers of grains and cereals in, frozen/fridge cars of meats in and boxcars filled with pallets of products outbound. CEE is going to be busy! Could have a lot of potential as a modelling project.

    Although I have nothing for those who run RR crossings, this is a case where the RR SHOULD be paying for car and boat damage. These gates go up and down (for no reason) more often then then the doors on the local Walmart opening and closing.

    • @billmorris2613
      @billmorris2613 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The gates are probably working properly. They could possibly make adjustments in the length of the circuits, that would give a little more time after the bells start ringing and the lights start flashing before the gates start down. But it would probably keep the gates down longer. Which would probably tick off more people, except the rail fans, who like to watch the switching.

      There a few locomotives on CCET that fit the description of "grungy blue diesel" but none of them are in this video. Are you saying that you've found out it's been repainted in some other way?
      The locomotives in this video are a pair of EMD GP15-1s, numbers 1657 and 1686, which the railroad has acquired in the last couple of months. They've been in this rather fine black and red paint scheme for as long as CCET has had them.
      The grungy blue diesel could be either one of the two GE B36-7s that the railroad has (numbers 5758 and 5795, from memory) or the GP49 that they used to have, which was painted in blue and yellow Alaska Railroad colours but with the word "Alaska" painted over. That was either number 2806 or 2807 -- I forget which was which; the other one was also repainted into a handsome black livery. They sold the GP49s a year or two ago.

    Gates have breakaway shear pins to try to prevent heavy damage to the gate and or vehicle when hit . Sometimes it’s a simple repair. My railroad had keyed circuit interrupter at signal box that the train crew used and used flag protection for the crossing during switching.

      The problem is that they're triggered by proximity detectors on the track. There are two types of detector: some just detect the presence of a train close to the crossing; others measure how fast the train is moving. Both of these have problems with switching manoeuvres. With the first kind of detector, if the train moves slightly too far from the crossing, the detector says, "OK -- the train's gone" and lifts the gates. With the second kind, if the train stops for too long, the detector says "OK -- the train's still close to the crossing but it's not on it and it's stopped" and opens the gates. It may be that the detectors need to be adjusted.

      Those gates are a mess. Train workers calling the drivers a "dumbass" when the bells ring for a second then the arm comes down real fast and hits a trailered boat that was already committed to crossing the tracks.

    • @beeble2003
      @beeble2003 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@joeblow5154 The gates are certainly a mess. However, the bells had been ringing for fully six seconds at the point when the gate struck the boat. It's unclear how long the lights had been flashing before the bells started.

    • @joeblow5154
      @joeblow5154 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@beeble2003 It looked about 3 seconds before the arm came down fully @ 6 seconds. That ain't much time if your pulling a heavy trailer behind. I'm just saying they need to give it few seconds longer for traffic to react. Not everyone has lightning quick reflexes to make a decision and carry it out.

    • @beeble2003
      @beeble2003 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@joeblow5154 I suppose I cheated a bit by counting time from the bell to the strike rather than the bell to the gate moving. But, hey, three seconds is better than nothing, right? At 20:55, you see that, simultaneously, the lights start flashing, the bell start sounding and the gates come down. At least that time, the crossing was manned so no traffic was moving. They definitely need to get the crossing fixed.

    They need better manual control of those gates. When the train is stopped just short of the crossing, the gates go up, and then when it starts moving again it's half way across the road before the gates come down again. They need to manually close the gates in that instance, instead of waiting for the detector to kick in.

    Hey JT...The general public does not have a clue how their toasters, vacuum cleaners and big screen TVs gets from one place to another. Thanks for showing the hard work our RR crews work to get us our stuff.

    It looks like the gate was designed to be easily repaired. The end of the gate was cut square, so it didn't break there. The mounts look OK too, so they must have breakaway mounts that grip the gate end but break off on impact.

    • @jasonk9779
      @jasonk9779 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is exactly it. They are designed to breakaway easily.

      @@jasonk9779 I still would not want to challenge it with my Ford aluminum body pickup truck - feels like 12- or 15-hundred bucks to smooth and paint. And you don't want to make an insurance claim on that, excellent way to get rated up.

    wasnt boring to me, the trains are pretty red coloring. nice and calm video too. there were a few close calls with cars trailors and gates tho. I seen the gate break, yes you got it on the video, what do they expect when the gates are going up and down and up and down, I mean really.

    People are dumb when it comes to crossings. When I worked in St Bernard at P&G's rail yard a SnapOn truck put one of those arms through its passenger window at the Vine St crossing. On your comment about the cars all mixed up. Customers that have rail cars parked call for certain car numbers to be grabbed. So what happens is you have to go dig those cars out and that just mixes them all up.

      The different location for the exhaust stacks was probably an engineering chance to make something better. The two locomotives may have different dash numbers, ie GP15-1 and GP15-2.

    And you saying "Those gates are actually pretty heavy" reminded me of a childhood memory from when I was staying with one of my Aunts for a while as a 5-year old, and the railroad was right outside her window, maybe 50 metres away (whatever that may be in feet?!), with crossing gates in a bit of a distance; And on one night I saw the gates going down just as a pedestrian was entering that crossing, and he got hit on the head by them, but strangely he just kept walking as if nothing even happened, and the gate stayed up in the position where it had hit him! 😳 This was in Germany in the mid 70's, by the way; I moved to NZ 25 years later 🙂 A couple more memories of that particular railroad: A steam train rolling by one snowy day in Winter and many of the passengers waving at me, and also: Passing aforementioned crossing just after a freight train had gone past and seeing its red tail ligh fall off onto the tracks 😀

    What is that hissing from the engines??

    • @TheMadness51
      @TheMadness51 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The hissing is the air opening and closing brake shoes on the locomotives. When line pressure exceeds what ever the max is, the pop off valves open reducing pressure.
