Stupid on-lookers making it worse with all that frantic noise. those gorillas were just being protective they never saw a dog before. If acclimated, that dog probably would have made a fine pet for them, actually. Other animals have been introduced into gorilla families as pets. Otters, goats, deer. bunnies, kittens and Michael, a silverback had a border collie.

The main troop (Winston family) was in the back bedrooms behind the tan wall. The gorillas that were out in the enclosure were Franklin (Frank 13) and Monroe (10) part of the Winston family, a bachelor troop. Both are still considered "black backs". Even though Frank is still a boy he is 400lbs (his dad Paul Donn 450+lbs) and if he wanted to catch the dog he would have. I've followed Frank since he was born, and knowing his personality he just wanted to chase the dog out of the enclosure mostly. Looking at the video there are periods where both Frank and the dog stop and stare at each other. If Frank wanted to catch the dog he would have. It may not look like it here, but Frank's actually got a rather cheeky personality:

Hi Sonya!!! Well said! And Very true, People don't understand that the Silverback was probably more frightened by the Dog then the Dog of the Silverback. The Silverback's job is to protect the family from any threats. If that Silverback wanted to hurt the Dog, he easily would have, But, Silverbacks are very peaceful souls and would want the threat to go peacefully then hurt and fight them.
The Silverback, Frank, is actually a very sweet soul who is playful. But, he isn't sure if the Dog is there to hurt them, etc. As always, Frank as most Silverbacks, just watched and tried to intimidate the Dog into leaving. Throwing the dirt was a clear example of Frank telling the Dog to get out. Well done, Sweet Frank!!! I'm glad this ended well.

@@maryeddy4871Hi 👋Mary! Well said also! Isn't Frank a sweet delight?! Monroe as well. 😲 It was likely the first time Frank had seen a dog! Imagine what was going through his head 😆. Frank is extremely smart, and after studying the dog realized the dog was no threat at all. Frank gave chase, but he had no interest in making contact with the dog. This testifies to Frank's gentle soul and wonderful personality, and how captive born gorillas are rather domesticated, and behave differently from gorillas born in the wild. It cracks me up how Frank twirls and dances when his name is called for treats, and feeding time. He is a character. 🤣 Keepers say Frank loves hands on, and the attention. He actually makes sounds (gorilla sighs, belches, and whistles mean all is well and I am content 👍). He's definitely a big ol' ham 🤣. Anyway you're right! He just wanted the dog out of the enclosure...is all 😃. Blessings! 💐

@@sonyawilson1000 , Yes, Frank was always a sweet and tender hearted soul to me. I loved how he used to try and get affection and he is very sensitive in many ways. I saw him as "lost" ways and just wanting to be loved by other Gorillas. I don't know, some Gorillas stand out to me because of their sensitive ways and how they try to get affection as we do.
Frank is now a Silverback. He is a ham and has to be the King! LOL! We know how gentle these Gorillas are, but, they also must show off and seem "top dog" even when inside they may be thinking "WTF is this about??!!" LOL! I have seen Silverbacks run from Spiders, Snakes and it is so funny. But, they have to protect their home and family no matter how fearful they may be. Frank out on a great show. He just told the doG, "ENOUGH! Time to go, buddy!!" I would be shocked to ever see a Silverback hurt another animal unless it was viciously attacked or attacked other family members. They hate fights, they are peace keepers.
Thank you for the information about "Franks noises" I love hearing those "Behind the scenes" facts about their personalities that make them so unique and even more precious.
Thank you for the kind reply and hope you are well!! Have a great and save holiday babes!!!

    • @BenjaminGunnell

I can think of worse things, but I'll refrain. Gorillas don't do things like that as far as I know. They're very passive, except males fighting each other. Worst case- or a more probable one is that a gorilla grabs the dog out of curiosity and then is shot for grabbing the dog like with Harambe.

Dog is lucky that there were only 2 males outdoors. Frank and Monroe are brothers awaiting a transfer and family of their own. If the other group was out there would have been an alpha and too many protective females with kids. Frank could have easily killed the dog. He already ran over the older alpha Winston and had to be separated.
