Tessie, I spent many years working in the public school system. This very subject came up one day in the teacher's lounge. Our head math teacher used a whiteboard to show us how it does not pay to wait past age 62 to start collecting your social security. He had a formula and he was an extremely smart man who we all trusted. I can't repeat the formula, but the gist of it was that you will never make up the difference you lose by waiting. I know that the government wants us all to wait until we are on the verge of death before we sign up, that way you won't live long enough to collect what you've paid in, but you're better off signing up at 62. And yes, my husband signed up as soon as he was eligible. Also, let Ken know that he needs to sign up six months before his 62nd birthday.

Agree totally. Start social security at 62. And Tessie if your income is not too high, even if you never worked, you too can sign up at 62. And you will receive 50%, then further reduction of maybe 72% of the 50%. Look into the numbers. Should one's spouse pass on, then the new amount for survivor is 100%. Please research your options.

Time flies SO fast. I'm 69, retired at 62, and it feels like it's only been a year or so! I tell people all the time that I'm soooo glad I did and if you can afford it at 62, do it!

As a widow, I retired from teaching at 60 and began taking SS at 62. I would recommend that Ken file for SSDI (disability) now that will later turn into regular SS when he reaches full-retirement age, and he will not be penalized for taking his SS early. After 2 years of disability, he will be eligible for Medicare.

    • @tammyphillips5153

I agree , it will take some medical tests to prove the injury but worth it in the end. He's paid taxes, he deserves his SSDI.

    • @lindastuck5073

I agree with regards to SSDI.
Also, my husband took retirement at 62. The biggest challenge was medical insurance till age 65. Also, know that your social security benefits will be affected by his early (age 62) decision. I say this because we didn’t give that consideration when my husband retired early yet we have NEVER regretted retiring at 62. We too make lifestyle adjustments. God is good and we are blessed.

    • @joycerodenberg2343

she is right SSDI first and then it will go into Social Security and you won’t be penalized for taking Social Security at 62. I am on Social Security now but I was on SSDI sense 2013 I was 54 I was told by Social Security that that was the best way for me to do it so I would not get penalized for taking Social Security out too early

Yes, from experience here from an 80 yr old. You should always start at 62. It's a blessing! We are not promised tomorrow and waiting till seventy may never happen. A few dollars more is tempting but it is not enough to wait for. That's up to your husband though to do what he feels is best for him. My dad died a few weeks after he signed up at 62. He got his first check a few days after he died and the SS dept requested it be sent back. Then my brother never made it due to dying unexpected at 57 and brother-n-law died at 58 unexpected. We just never know what tomorrow holds for any of us.

The story of your Dad is similar to mine. He didn't even get his first check, my Mom had to call SS and they took the money back. My Dad knew (even before getting sick) that you have to live a *very* long time for the money to even out if you wait for full retirement age. I plan to take mine as soon as possible. I want to live while I can, and that freedom is worth more than any amount of money!

In my 60’s I had a chronic illness and it was difficult for me to continue working. My husband passed away in 1999 I was able to collect survivors benefits. At age 70 I began collecting on my own social security record. With any type of a chronic illness I would advise your husband to collect at 62. No job is worth it. Family always comes first.

Hey sweetie, good for you sticking up for your hubby. Never mind peoples unsolicited advice. N.O.T.B. (None of their business). You two lovebirds do what is best for you. Yesterday I watched a you tube channel discussing why they were going to start collecting at 62. It made a lot of sense. I have 3 years and 4 months until I start collecting. Those who take a negative stand on Social Security don't understand that it is money that we who are entitled because we paid into it. If it were up to me, I wish they never took my money in the first place. I would have done something smarter with it and wouldn't wonder if there will be any left by the time I want to collect. Thank you for your hard work. We all appreciate you.

Tomorrow may not be promised, but I waited to age 70 to collect my SS, because I remembered how little my mother got from collecting at age 62 (she lived to age 86) and my MIL, (who collected SS at age 62 and lived to age 93) complained bitterly about how little she got from SS, and how she regretted collecting at 62.

My husband is disabled; he was diagnosed with MS 10 years ago, and it has progressed quickly. We had a nice nest egg, for the retirement we dreamed of. 2 letters changed everything we dreamed of doing. His meds every month, drained that nest egg, within a few years. We had moved into a farm house, on 5 acres, before the diagnosis. God is great, he knew we needed to he here, not in the city. Long story short, i took my SS at 62, it has been a tremendous help to us. I say, go for it!!!

You’re right, Tessie, life is short. Short of a miracle (which we continue to pray for), he is quite possibly living the last days of his life now. We learned to live on less and thank God, had no mortgage or car payment. No material things have a higher value than time. Cherish it! 🙏

First of all, I would like to say, i'm so sorry about that accident your husband was in at that early age. And when you have to live with pain or discomfort because of it, it can make everything really uncomfortable and hard at times. I live with chronic backpain and after surgery and a fusion i have never been painfree. It gets very complicated at times. When you say you are very protective of him and what he does i totally get it. You love your husband and you want him by your side as long as possible and that's how it should be.
I'm widowed and i took care of my husband who was very ill, until he passed away.
Take care of each other and adjust your life to whatever it will take to be there for each other and love each other.
You are remarkable people and i'm so happy to be a part of your youtube family.
Many greetings from your friend from idaho on this cold day. Stay warm! The

I waited until I was full retirement, 66 2 months. I was still working and did not have to take it early. Taking it at 62 costs you about a 40% reduction. I think no one can tell you what works for you. If you can wait, do that if you need the money, then perhaps you should look into taking it at 62. I have collected SS for just over 3 years and have never used it. I invest mine. I still work (self-employed) and everything is paid off. What worked for me may not for others. One thing to consider. Once you file you cannot change that. If your (wife) SS is less, then your husbands and he passes before you, you only get the amount up to what he collected. Just get educated in this area before you collect. Good Luck! ~hippie Chick~

The man that worked there, asked me why I hadn’t signed up for Social Security yet.
I said I was going to wait until 66 years and two months.
He brought out a piece of blank paper and did the math in front of me.

My thinking is that we don't know how much longer we have in life, especially with physical problems, so, in my opinion, it just makes sense to take it now and enjoy the extra security that comes with it! I don't regret taking it at 62, it has been a tremendous blessing to me! I'll be 66 in a few months and I truly don't know where I would be right now if I hadn't taken it when I did.

My husband is 5 years older than me. He waited to collect social security til he was in his late 60's. He was working maintenance at a hotel and downtown was getting rough and I was afraid he would get hurt walking to his car. There were shootings and lots of things happening-not a good situation. I retired at 62 and started collecting social security at 63. It was a good thing for us because my granddaughter moved in with her daughter. Since she was finishing her last semester of college and working we took care of our great granddaughter while she was at work or school. Money was really tight but we made due. Once she moved into an apartment the pandemic hit and I was grateful we could stay at home. Money isn't so tight anymore but we live simply. We also saved for our retirement when we were young and those investments paid off (no matter how much we struggled before retirement we never touched our 401k).

My husband and I waited until 66 to collect. I’m so glad we waited. The difference is quite a bit more money per month. I also will receive his full benefits if he passes away before me. I’m 6 years younger so it its security for me and will make life easier as a widow. Everyone needs to decide what is best for their situation. We both were in good health in our sixties, so working until 66 wasn’t a problem. Fast forward we’ve been retired 10 years, the basics such as food and utilities cost a lot more, so I’ll glad for the higher income. We have cut back too.

I was forced out of my job at age 60. I tried a couple of different jobs, but finally came to terms with the fact that I was burnt out and tired (40 years as a nurse). I also had chronic back problems and bone-on-bone arthritis in both knees. I decided to be done. Fortunately, I had saved well, and was able to stay afloat until I could apply for SS at 61 1/2, to begin drawing at 62. I also had 2 pensions but was unable to draw from them until 62 as well. I consulted a certified financial advisor who walked me through the entire process, showed me how to invest wisely for the long term benefit. But his best piece of advice was to start drawing SS at 62. Showing me the breakdown, there was very minimal difference between the amount I would collect monthly at 62 vs. 64- like less than $100/month. Best decision I’ve ever made.

He also has some screws and titanium in him from an old injury/surgery. I believe if you are a blue-collar worker, it is not always that easy or simple to keep working past a certain age in the same capacity. Do what is best for your family. I was disabled by strokes at age 58. Then my husband passed when our son was 9. I got SS at 62. It wasn't even close enough to keep a roof over our head.😢
I would suggest you find out what his benefits will be then. Also the amount it would be if you both can wait . ❤❤ Your in my prayers. Ask God. He will tell your heart what to do ❤❤

I completely understand. At age 33, I suffered a severe back injury at work that ended my nursing career. I couldn't ever work outside the home again. I began drawing SSD approximately 6 years later. Now I'm pretty much homebound and need an electric w/c to get around. I can't stand in one place for any length of time and have great difficulty walking a very short distance. It's a huge blessing to have a loyal, faithful and supportive husband which I do. I'm 70 now, my husband is 77 and I don't know what I would have done without him all of these years. I wish you both every success in all you do. ❤

I feel the same way Tessie. I tried to get my Husband to retire before he did. He now says he wishes he had done it. We get by. He has good retirement and now we both draw SS. He is older than me, Im 64 I started drawing at 62, he was still working so he started drawing at 66. If you are not working its smart to start drawing at 62. It would take many years to make up the difference if you wait. And my poor Mother was going to wait till she could draw the maximum and passed away at 63, so she never saw a penny of SS. Take care Tessie. ❤

My financial planner advised me to ,l could have waited until l was 65 and get grand total of $35 more a month,l would have never recouped the five years of not taking it. Also please get your husband to go on disability right now! It is NOT free money from the government! He paid into it all the years he did work! He deserves it! Prayers for your discernment.

I chose to collect Social Security at 63. I did a rough calculation of the difference between taking it at 62 and waiting until almost 67 for "full" benefits using a life expectancy of 85. The little bit more I would make by waiting was not enough to sway me to do so, especially with the stress level that was increasing at my workplace. I agree with you that life is short and I had several friends and a sister that passed away from illness at a young age and I wanted to be sure I had time to enjoy life because who knows when our last day will be. Being debt free has made it easier to live on a modest retirement income and I'm glad I chose to take the earlier retirement. Plus they keep talking about there are going to be cuts to SS in the next few years and I figured I should get what I can from the program that I paid into for so many years. Thank you for sharing the story about Kenny. I never thought about anyone saying something negative about him from your last video, but I also remember when he had that fall and how hard it was getting to keep doing a physical job with each passing year. I try to watch as many of the ads as I can on your videos to help you out with TH-cam. Enjoy your life together and do what works best for the two of you!!

I did not start SS till 67.5. The reason being, my husband has many medical conditions. One was losing his kidney to cancer and a botched lamentation. Then, in the only kidney he had left, he has a kidney stone. During surgery, I was told they would do everything to save his life. That kidney got damaged and his last kidney has only partial use. At the time, I worked at the hospital just to keep up all our medical for him. We all do what is best for our spouses. He is in constant pain, but he never complains.

Hi Tessie, that was very courageous to share that about your husband, he is very courageous to allow you to share that. I am a person who had a work accident in 2016 and I have been disabled with chronic issues ever since. I am 58 years old now and I am on SSDI. They don’t give you very much but it’s helps. if I were to be asked a year ago about taking retirement early, I would’ve said no. But I’ve been following several reliable channels about Social Security and disability. They are saying that the money might run out early, they’re saying there may also be some major cuts in the next 10 years. If I were in your husband situation, I would not wait. Many people are applying for that service and I would be concerned about getting less later. Those are my thoughts on that.

The entire situation would be resolved if they just lifted the cap. Is it that much of a hardship for a person making between 2-3 hundred thousand a year to pay ss taxes on 275 as opposed to 250?? With all the multi milionaires and billionaires out there it would be an easy fix. But this country has become based on greed.

Thanks to Ken for sharing. He didn't have to but it clears up things that seem to matter to a few people. I have chronic pain in my foot. I broke my ankles and three other bones in my left foot. I, had plates and screws in both ankles on that foot. I was fifty and am now 77. I should have had the plates and all removed but after a long recovery from a major surgery most people don't want anther surgery to recover from. I now have a screw wandering around my foot. Yes, I have pain. I also have fibromyalgia and chronic pain and fatigue.
I took my social security at 62. I figured it out and if I had waited one more year it would have added $3.00 more a month than if I took it at 62. I suggest Ken put in for it now. It will be a blessing for you both. Plus he will feel that he is contributing to your over all income. I know he contributes a lot already by all the work he does on your homestead.
I'm happy you are not going to be working so hard. Enjoy your life and keep inspiring all of us. You seem so relaxed and that reflects in your beauty. 💕🙏🙏

I have titanium fused to my spine so I can relate to aches, especially in cold Canada.
Here in Canada, people can start collecting pensions at 50 plus. However, the most benefit would be 67.

I am turning 55 in July. I applied for disability because I have a spinal cord injury and have a spinal cord stimulator with 4 leads in my spine. I have Fibromyalgia, Hypothyroidism, cervical fusion, TMJ, blushing disc, spurs on my spine and feet, chronic pain syndrome, nerve damage, Arachnoiditis, fatty liver, stage 2 kidney disease, gerd, going through menopause. I’m sure I’m missing something. It’s been over a year I applied so I guess I’ll need to get an attorney. I have good days and bad days. I still work part time as much as I can. It’s hard. I have amazing bosses who allow me to work when I wan or work from home if needed. I am not a candidate for spine surgery because I would have chance of being paralyzed. I do everything I possibly can to save a penny so I appreciate the creators I follow that have helped me get by. Medical bills killed us.
