I hope I am wording this properly... What software/viewer are you using to view/open the png files? I tried saving with the transparent background, but it still does not show the checkers when I open the file.
I usually just open the png in Chrome to view it.

Select what you want to mirror, then go to format options and flip it horizontally.

Not with Google Drawings. You will need something like Figma, Photopea, or Gravit. I hope Google Drawings adds a real pen tool and boolean functions in the near future.
What would you suggest for creating a business card with this logo now? I usually teach using photoshop and indesign, but for distance learning from home, we do not access to adobe. This tutorial was great, I thank you for sharing. I am wondering if I should have them create their business card right in google drawings after their logo is complete.
Thank you for the comment. I might suggest Google slides for business cards because you can you use multiple slides like multiple Pages or front and back and design it all in one document. Google Slides has all the same shaped building features as drawings as well.

How did you put the words over the vector?
Press and hold control and press the up arrow on the keyboard to move objects above others. Hold control and press the down arrow to move objects behind other objects.

How would you add curved text, for inside a circle logo?
You could do it, but this might not be the best platform for that kind of task. You could create each letter as word art and arrange and rotate them manually to get the layout you want. Check out my Gravit videos for more advanced features for making logos.

How did you make your text appear on top of the shape? Mine is just stuck underneath.
You can right click and move objects to front or back or use ctrl+alt+[ (the bracket keys)
How did you make the P in your JP logo?
I converted the text to paths and deleted one of the corner points.

Try using ctr+shift and the up and down arrows to move objects forward or backward.
