    more then 30 years ago we took a Trenitalia Notte from Roma to Sicily; great trip and in those days there was a nice dining car! Before we took the Settebello (TEE) from Milano to Roma. In Sicily we stayed in several places like Taormina en rented a car to see the island, Palermo included where we took a Alitalia flight to Roma and from Roma a connecting flight to Amsterdam back home..

    I would have been geeking out so much loading a train on a ferry. How did they do it? Did they unhook and hook the engine to each section of train or did they use a pulley system?

    • @GroundedLifeTravel
      @GroundedLifeTravel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We aren't exactly sure how they did it, but we were the third section on and they kept pulling us forward and then backward until it was our turn. It was pretty cool!

    Terrific video and an interesting departure from your AmTrak episodes.
    Of course, Europe uses trains for A LOT of inter-city transportation (as opposed to US' AmTrak that's a less-used, govt-created hybrid model of "ferries" on some routes and "cruises" on most long-distance). I live along NECorridor, used to commute to NY and trains are my choice between Boston & Washington. Have also train'd in Europe (all over Continent incl. train ferry to/from Copenhagen, and UK too, but only once on a sleeper between Glasgow & London).
    Deregulation of Europe's airline business during the early 2000's offered better air travel options between many more-distant markets. Still, as we know, from times required to connect to/from airports; security lines, and delays, train travel is still terrific for 150 ~ 350 km's. This is a long'ish trip and it is interesting to see how the service is sufficient but maybe a bit perfunctory?

    • @GroundedLifeTravel
      @GroundedLifeTravel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You do have to search pretty far to find a long sleeper train, basically you need to go to Sicily, otherwise there just isn't enough time to do it right. The high speed trains are too fast in the north. It is a totally different experience from the 3 day trips in the USA for sure!

  • @lizarichards2243
    @lizarichards2243 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Looks like the only place for you to sit was on the beds. No seats in the cabin? Was there an observation car at all? Anywhere else you could sit? Loved the views though. And the ferry was pretty cool, too.

    • @GroundedLifeTravel

      Yes, there were barriers that would have prevented it, so we didn't have any problems!

  • @Ilovemesomemj1
    @Ilovemesomemj1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    So there's no seats in the room? You have to watch the views sitting on the bed? Or just go to the car where the seats are? I mean the views are pretty but not much comfort

    • @GroundedLifeTravel
      @GroundedLifeTravel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The bed can fold up and have a seat under it, but we just kept it like it was for some reason. We took another one back to Rome yesterday, and it had a built in seat as well as the bed, so a better room!

    Wow looks like you guys are doing a similar trip to me! We started in Newcastle UK and worked our way down on the Eurostar through Belgium, Germany, Switzerland (although we took the Bernina instead of the Glacier) and then down through Italy now in Palermo! We didn’t do the sleeper train instead we did the day train and it was still such a great trip! Even though there was no wifi, no food the 9.5 hrs flew by!!! Maybe we’ll bump into you around Sicily 😀

    So is the deal that the train divides in Messina with part of it going west to Palermo and part going south to Siracusa?

    • @GroundedLifeTravel
      @GroundedLifeTravel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm.. good question, that could be the case, ours went to Palermo, but the Terminus station on the board was listed as Siracusa, and I can't imagine they go there after Palermo, so I think you could be right.

    • @giumas1693

    Hello from Washington State! Another great video!! I seen a couple videos on how the train ferry works…..that just too cool!!
    One thing I wanted to ask … since there’s no seats in your room only beds …. How do you both sit too look out the window? I think my back would bother me not sitting back. Hope that’s not a silly question 🤓
    Looking forward to your next adventure. Thank you!!
    Kathy🥰

      Thanks! The bed would fold up and have seats under it but we just sat on it like a couch sort of with our legs hanging off a little. I'm not sure why we did that instead of making the seats up!

    On this, and one other sleeper car video, you showed a top bunk for a 3rd person. It looks like that uppermost bunk would come down to within inches of the middle bunk. Does the middle one go lower, in that case? My inner claustrophobe is curious as to how that works. Very fun and informative video, as always!

    Love your ch but a question as you guys are now Euro travelers, which do you two like the best, Amtrak or the Euro trains :) ??

    • @GroundedLifeTravel
      @GroundedLifeTravel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We love both, but they are really really different. Amtrak routes are so long, and we love that, you get the real feel of 2-3 days on a train, which we love. Europe has the high speed routes which are equally as awesome, but you are on and off much quicker always. It's almost like comparing two different modes of transportation.
