pointless in 4 of the 7. it didn't feel like it though lol. idk how shoe in he was for the conn smythe in hindsight. i kinda lean a bit to barkov tbh for the conn smythe.

Never seen a CS winner be so invisible in the last two games of a series. Congrats oilers, you played two extra months of hockey and have fuck all to show for it.
What’s with the razzing Connor Mcdavid all the time Mackinnon shouldn’t be even in the conversation Connor Mcdavid made it to 4 th round and almost sipped from the cup the Florida Panthers won because of luck the puck that almost went in but just grazed the outside of the gaol post and the puck that almost went in but the Russian named defence stopped it and so it could of been a 3 to 2 advantage for the Oilers!”

you mean the team with 4 number one picks and numerous top 5-10 picks.. McDavid is no Crosby or Lemieux,, absent when needed in crunch time.. i dont care about the con smythe.. this was a legacy game where he did literally nothing
winning a conn smythe when ur team loses just speaks volumes to how impressive mcdavid really is. i think mcdavid atm makes a really good case for being a top 10 player of all time just with that.
Top 10 in any sport is tremendously difficult without winning the big game. Yes he was sensational in the series. But having zero points in game 7 does hurt your legacy.
Florida is a much better built team with a better GM and scouting staff. Wasted a 70 goal season from Hyman, I'm not sure if he cant repeat that. RNH, Ekholm and Hyman are getting older. No depth beyond 6 guys and questionable goaltending.
Until McDavid comes back and wins like Gretz and Crosby... comparing him to them is lazy. You cannot compare what HAS happened with other players to what has NOT happened with McDavid.
It was a great run boys. McDavid is the most exciting sports player to watch. Even though oilers lost, McDavid legacy only grows from here. He has a taste being that close, and has gonna be hungrier now. Watch out in the following years, because hes gonna go beast mode.
This question is 1 year too early. Gretzky and Crosby both lost their first appearances in the Final. Both came back and won it the next year. If Edmonton goes out in round 1 next year, maybe then we start to ask this question.
First of all, Gino...you are the best! Got hooked on all of your TH-cam videos, analysis and passionate joy for the game this post season. Your banter with your guests is awesome and you stick by your opinion. Everybody had the Oilers done a lot earlier than Game 7 of The Final. You said that McDavid wouldn't let that happen and you were right. Your guests owe you a lot of "you were right Gino". Last night, a close game. Florida played so well defensively and when you have two great teams playing their best, puck luck does become a factor playing a game at breakneck speed with a little rubber puck. Sometimes you get the bounces, sometimes you don't. McDavid is always a factor on the ice, whether he's on the scoreboard or not and when the superstar beats a Gretzky recored for apples, we were all enriched by watching this guy play the game at such a level during this post season. A master of the game, like Jordan, like Tiger, like Brady and the precious few who have dominated their sport with such a high level of dominance and entertainment for the pure fan. We all wanted McDavid to hoist the cup. He deserves it. But diminishing his significance by not doing so on this run is nonsense. Hockey is more of an all roster team sport than any. One guy can't win it alone. Congrats McD and the Oil for a great post season!!
I think it doesn’t matter what any of us think. Because none of us can predict what the future holds for McDavid or the oilers or any team for that matter. But, we can all sit here and assume.
Turns out McDavid has an abdominal injury since before the playoffs and will likely require surgery. Draisaitl has had a broken finger on his shooting hand and broken rib since the Vancouver series. ...Hayes, your take is just your jealous leaf fan crap again 😂
This is a conversation that needs to be shelved for a later date. If Edmonton learns from this and wins the Cup next year then all of the comparisons Gino is making will make sense, but objectively you have to take things as they are today. You can hope that your projections come to fruition, but you can’t talk about it like it is guaranteed to happen. Yzerman was looked at as a very good player who couldn’t deliver until he finally did. So based on what has actually happened, not what could have or what we hope will happen, McDavid is a very good player who has yet to deliver, and we can revisit this topic at the end of the next season.
I know how great Gretzky he needed a body guard to shadow him to keep other defence men from hitting him but Connor Mcdavid does it all by him self making the gaols truly quite a feat!”
@@earlviney5212 And a bigger son of a gun compared to Connor Mcdavid who could plow right through the d men plus maybe hurting the gaol net minder to get his gaol I’ve seen footage not to long ago.
The Problem with Mcdavid is the same issue i am seeing with other sports like L.James in the NBA. We have an overhype mentality for him, like all you hear in the western hockey media how he is this unstopable machine the greatest player in the world and all that. But the problem is with that is, i see people really not calling him out on his BS until the season is over, like if he has a pointless streak or start having pissy fits with cheap shots on other teams players just having a blow out of a game. And for record i don't think he is a bad player i can see him making NHL history... the problem is when he is having a cold streak or fits call it out or he needs to do what some of rhe GOAT's do like Crosby, Gretzky and even on the NBA side Jordan and Kobe did, study what they were sloppy last game or when someone is razzing him out and they have a goal and 2 assists dig deep and double that in the next remaning periods. For me not only that would prove he is the next legacy of the NHL but that would be the key to clutch lord Stanley's cup, cause sure he was batter and hurt but i bet everyone else on the team and the panthers were, just the panthers had that killer instinct and hunger from last years blowout. The moment McDavid does that the team would follow suit with relentless mentality if he puts it up.
Exactly!! Matthews wins a League MVP, and all of a sudden he is right up there with Howe, Lemieux, Gretzky, Orr?!?! I love how Hayes says that even if the Oilers lost in Round 1, he would still be the best player in the league. We both know that if they lost in the first round, everyone won at TSN would be the first ones dissing McDavid and bowing down at the feet of Matthews.
Some forget that Gretzky's first Stanley cup appearance he got mopped in 4 straight to the Islanders, and as he stated in interviews what he saw when he walked past the locker room he didn't see them celebrating the win but them completely exhausted with ice packs, oxygen tanks thats when he realized what it takes to win. Next year they won.
You’re right Gino. McDavid is just entering his prime. The Salary Cap just went up. Players have seen the Edmonton atmosphere. If you want to win the cup and have a fun time doing it. Take a pay cut and play for the Oilers. This just made us BETTER as a franchise. Bryan, just remember… Stuart Skinner has more career Stanley Cup Final points than Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, William Nylander and Morgan Reilly COMBINED. Hayesy, just say you relieved the Oilers didn’t win. But don’t be blind to the incredible performance of McDavid during this run & how hockey players will want to play for Edmonton during our window.
Exiting his prime* only 6 players in the history of the league have led the league in a stat past the age of 30. Crosby hasn’t led the league in a stat since 29 years of age. Gretzky and Lemieux had their best seasons between 22 and 27. Mcdavid will be 28 next year The average age for a player to lead the nhl in goals is 25 and points is 27. McDavid will never be as godly as he is now in the future.
Honestly, the fact that so often forgotten with this sport is that it’s not up to one guy, I wish it was, I wish hockey came down to one person. But it’s the highest team sport possible.
We will only know once he retires. The thing is its extremely hard to make it back to the finals. most players dont make it, some only make it, and some make it and win it. If McDavid hasnt won the cup by the time he retires, this will haunt him. Its not the Gretzky era.
Gino is off his rocker. Gretzky had won 3 cups by the time he was 9 seasons into his career. Sid lost in his 3rd year and won in his 4th. McDavid did nothing meaningful in any of the important games and this run was overblown. He put up 5pts in one game against a terrible LAK team and had a pair of useless 4pt games in blowouts. 2 shots and no points in game 6 or 7. He can't be trusted to play defence. He's a terrible leader and his team will never get this easy of a run to the finals again. LA was garbage, they struggled against another garbage team in Vancouver as well. Good luck having Vegas finish that poorly again anytime soon, and the rest of the division is improving. Regardless of if Draisaitl leaves, or the team signs a 3rd one dimensional player to a grossly overpriced contract, McDavid will never win a cup with this team, or as the leader of a team. He's not even a top 10 player in the league today, let alone all time. Putting up big points in blowout games while offering your team nothing outside of power plays and oddman rushes.
I thought about saying this during the regular season when Edmonton was near the bottom of the standings but I'll say this now. The best thing the Oilers could do for McDavid is trade him. He's not winning a cup with Edmonton. And it would be a crime against sport to see that man not win a cup. Unfortunately for McDavid I think he's too nice to want to leave and could sacrifice his prime years, his best shot, remaining loyal to the shitty undeserving franchise that drafted him. So he might be destined to never win a cup as a player. The Edmonton Oilers franchise is too arrogant and toxic due to decades of dynasty-legacy memberberries, old-boys-club nepotism and inept tanking culture to ever win.
its truly amazing how many ppl on here the morning after are praising the hell out of the Florida win and at the same time are bashing the Oilers and just brutalizing McDavid for not getting the job done. The remarks are non stop on YT and even FB. Amazing how immature "hockey fans" can be....
Why does TSN continually put on these stupid videos. What legacy? He's 27. Were you guys talking about his legacy when the Oilers lost in 2017 in like his second year?! Ridiculous Secondly, what's with the absolute disrespect for Florida that you expect that McDavid, Draisaitl or anyone else should just be able to get 4 points a night against them. Edmonton and Florida were the two best teams in the league and Florida one by one goal.
Well that's because they didn't do anything all that great, they put everyone in front of the net to push everything to the sides and kept shooting the puck across the ice for the icing call for half of the 3rd, and just piled guys into the boards to keep the puck caught up to drag the game out. It was a smart decision with them having the lead, but it wasn't won hard or entertainingly. But a win is a win and they got the Cup by playing it safe.
The thing that hurts his legacy, which is still being written, is that he did not show up in the ultimate game. If Lebron James lost game 7 in the finals and did not score a point he would be dumped on for failing his team. That is what McDavid did, it doesn't change who he is and what he is, it just lessens his trophy shelf, maybe forever. He may never play in a final again, ever. Gino's argument is only made if McDavid returns to the cup final and wins at some point in the future.
McDavid isn't done playing yet and a career isn't decided on one season. Gretzky only won his Stanley cups in Edmonton and on no other team, does that count against him? Does that mean the team carried him? There are no Dynasty teams like their used to be. The Cap ended that. Ovechkin didn't win his cup right away but it doesn't take away from how great he was prior to winning it. I sure hope the Oilers can get it done next season, they certainly deserve it.
At the end of the day, Hayes is right to an extent. Breaking records and accumulating absurd amounts of points is great and speaks to how amazing McDavid is, but that's not why NHLers play the game; they play it to win, and McDavid hasn't done that yet. He will need at least one cup to be in the Gretzky/Crosby category. All time greats will their teams to championships, and he needs to do that before he's truly considered one. He still has time, and that's why I don't think his legacy is hurt just yet. I'm sure he will win at least one. If he wins multiple,I think we're having real discussions about McDavid over Gretzky.
Im in the predicament of I dislike mcdavid because he is over rewarded for a lack of overall success while other generational players of the past (im really just talking ovi) had sooo much of their career defined by hockey journalists saying he didn't want it enough vs now being annoyed that it is actually happening to mcdavid bc ultimately in BOTH cases the reason for lack of success is not the effort of those players but the lack of depth and strength as a team
McDavid "legacy" won't get off the ground until he is out of Edmonton, or any Canadian team for that matter. Canadian teams get a sniff once every 6 years, it's an American game and big business now. Canuck buck and taxes is not beneficial to any Canadian team.
funny how giguere in 2003 was a man and still collected his mvp award, even though he got booed heavily by NJD fans. he and ANA even stayed on the ice for NJD celebration. funnier though how there's a double standard for mcjesus being a deity by the media and fans, yet it was ok for him to skip collecting the award. happy for mcjesus anyways getting the conn smythe MVP, but am much happier that florida won game 7. 💪🏻
I’d take Barkov at this point. I do think his lack of points in game 6 is not indicative of his impact (it’s actually an artifact of data-type). He learned over the year that he can’t put score his problems. He’s a better player this year and he’ll be better next year, but so will everyone else, so get ready…
Bryan Hayes is simply saying what every non-hockey fan sees from the outside. If McJesus were so great, why was he MIA in game 7? He’s the literal Lebron of the NHL. Don’t bother mentioning his name with Crosby or Ovechkin let alone 99.
Crosby had no points in game 7 in 2009 and no one questioned his legacy at the time because the penguins won. If oilers won no one would care that McDavid had no points in game 7
Ya I agree , Also now they have been pushed farther then any other team minus the panthers and all their fans EXPECT them to come back better next year. It will either make them or break them.
I don't think anybody knows his legacy which is going to be down the road. I personally think he's going to be one of those individuals that's considered to be the greatest but without a cup.
Lindros made it to the Finals much faster than McDavid, including beating Mario/Jagr, Hasek, Wayne/Messier to get to the finals before getting swept by a Detroit team loaded with HOFers.
crosby was 21 yrs old, as was much of his team. a bunch of kids...... lost to one of the greatest dynasties in NHL history in 6 games. came back and beat the red wings IN detroit, in game 7. completely different contexts
MJ won the championship after how many years in the league? Winning the cup and the championship are not easy and CM is nearly there. I would never discount McDavid and the Oilers out.
I agree with Bryan 100%...Coulda, shoulda, woulda - didn't! The conversation of him having the greatness of Gretz is laughable - not even close in terms of career achievements; that's what makes the great ones great. I don't believe EDM will get there again, I think they were lucky to get past Dallas. Gino is working off of "what if's"'..."If that shot would have went in"'...seriously? If Pelle Lindberg didn't crash his Porsche, he would be the all time leading Goalie and GOAT....sadly, he did! So in the end, yeah...people will remember that he didn't perform at all in Game 7, he was shut down completely in the 1st and 2nd periods - kudos to Panthers for being a bit part of that...not being a good sport and coming out to collect the CSA will also not help his legacy. Both Giguère and Hextall collected theirs in losing bids (and Hextall could be a real a** as well). If McDavid rebounds and wins a cup, then lets have this discussion again - that dear Gino, is the ultimate "if"
2 best players in nhl for last 9 yrs and still cant win, what a massive waste of talent by edmonton w mcdavid and draisaitl in there prime - draisaitl is a UFA nexr yr and is almost 30 - the gates are closing on that "dynasty" you are speaking about gino
What? Dude, you're completely wrong! And basketball is nothing like hockey. This is more on the GM Holland than on McDavid! Panthers didn't finish last year, hopefully McDavid will next year. Look how long it took for Super Mario to win!
guy rhymed off all these guys losing their first final appearance and didnt mention that those guys were 20-23 years old when they lost.... Mcdavid is 27 and its taken him 10 years to even get toa single final...
Gino is correct and Bryan is wrong. TSN should fire Mr Hayes. McDavid is better than then both Crosby and Gretzky. Looking forward to next year when McDavid breaks Gretzky's playoffs points record and hoists Lord Stanley. McDavid's legacy is just beginning 💯
In a vacuum it’s a failure. He and his team couldn’t get the job done. Fact is we don’t know what the future holds. Perhaps he can use this experience as fuel and spin it into a championship one day and it will make the journey all the more satisfying …. but that is still unknown. There is also a very real reality in which that’s the closest he will ever get.
Crosby and Gretzky both lost in their first Cup finals, yetI don't remember them winning the MVP. I certainly don't remember Crosby breaking any Gretzky records. His legacy wen't down though.... lol please.
First hand, there was a salary cap. and also We must not forget that there have been several good players in the national lines at the Hall of Fame and they did not win the Stanley Cup, that makes Mc David one of the very, very great players in the League nationally is everyone going to forget Carry Price's performances in Montreal I don't think so, I think he's going to be one of the greats and didn't win the cup.

McDavid was held off the scoreboard in both games 6 and 7. He deserved the Conn Smythe win, but those last two games tarnished his overall achievement.
Someone else said it
Dude put back to back 4 point games up to bring his team to game 6 lmao. And had 40 something points. He deserved it.
pointless in 4 of the 7. it didn't feel like it though lol.

Remind me of any of the legends who played under the current cap or 32 teams? Ridiculous comparisons.
Look at the consistent deep runs of Tampa from 2015-22 all under a salary cap. Not McDavid's fault but he could have taken less money if he truly cared about his legacy.
Never seen a CS winner be so invisible in the last two games of a series. Congrats oilers, you played two extra months of hockey and have fuck all to show for it.
Cmon now, they got nurse a goal!
You must not have remembered what Crosby looked like during his Conn Smythe seasons
Alas, I have to agree. McDavid couldn’t break the system that Florida used to shut him down.

@@meelosh92Exactly.
History only remembers the cup winners, Period. Sad but true.
winning a conn smythe when ur team loses just speaks volumes to how impressive mcdavid really is. i think mcdavid atm makes a really good case for being a top 10 player of all time just with that.
he is already top 10.
Top 10 in any sport is tremendously difficult without winning the big game. Yes he was sensational in the series. But having zero points in game 7 does hurt your legacy.
He wouldn't be over 40 points if Draisaitl didn't headshot Barkov. It speaks volumes about what a concussion can do.
Look! Florida Lost last year in the SCF and came back stronger than ever!
Oilers with Mcdavid will have more than one SCF !!
Florida is a much better built team with a better GM and scouting staff. Wasted a 70 goal season from Hyman, I'm not sure if he cant repeat that. RNH, Ekholm and Hyman are getting older. No depth beyond 6 guys and questionable goaltending.
Nobody talking about Barkov makes me giggle. We will be back again next year to continue the dynasty run.
Hayes is a joke. Stick to those golf clubs.
Hayes is right
You got that right
This question is 1 year too early. Gretzky and Crosby both lost their first appearances in the Final. Both came back and won it the next year. If Edmonton goes out in round 1 next year, maybe then we start to ask this question.
I find it fascinating how two competing points of view can both be right and wrong at the same time. Perspective is everything, after all, isn't it?
Good point Jeff
Wow! Great points! Especially loved your first comment. 😂. Next debate with Hayes, I may just tag you in 😂
What legacy?
I think it doesn’t matter what any of us think. Because none of us can predict what the future holds for McDavid or the oilers or any team for that matter. But, we can all sit here and assume.
Turns out McDavid has an abdominal injury since before the playoffs and will likely require surgery. Draisaitl has had a broken finger on his shooting hand and broken rib since the Vancouver series. ...Hayes, your take is just your jealous leaf fan crap again 😂
The people who were saying he was better than Wayne and Mario are very quiet today.
The only way this affects his legacy is if he doesn’t get a cup. If he gets a cup it’s water under the bridge, if not then you have this conversation.
That's right and he still does not have the cup
I know how great Gretzky he needed a body guard to shadow him to keep other defence men from hitting him but Connor Mcdavid does it all by him self making the gaols truly quite a feat!”

Bro played the series with an injury that will likely require surgery. The man is the best player in the world!
What does winning only a single round all career do to Austin Matthew’s legacy? Curious how the Toronto Sports Network would answer that question.
He didn’t score a point the last two games. Looks terrible
In no way! Just watch… who even pays that dude on the right? Looks like a personal thing… but hey, maybe it‘s me
Bryan Hayes.... More like Bryan Hates.
I bet if it was Austin Matthew's this clown Hayes would say it's a stepping stone.
Bryan is correct, I was disappointed with McDavid’s performance, he should have scored and won, ninth season already 😢
Mcdavid will be 28 next year
The average age for a player to lead the nhl in goals is 25 and points is 27.
McDavid will never be as godly as he is now in the future.
wow I'm surprised there is someone shooting it straight on TSN.
kudos Bryan Hayes for telling the truth to the audiences in Canada.
Not if he wins a cup, which he'll never do.
Gino Reda is a very smart man
😂
Honestly, the fact that so often forgotten with this sport is that it’s not up to one guy, I wish it was, I wish hockey came down to one person. But it’s the highest team sport possible.
We will only know once he retires. The thing is its extremely hard to make it back to the finals. most players dont make it, some only make it, and some make it and win it. If McDavid hasnt won the cup by the time he retires, this will haunt him. Its not the Gretzky era.
This Hayes dude is such a fraud
Gino, you are RIGHT! I completely agree with you!
McDavid is our hero. Next year the Cup will be in Edmonton!
Hayes needs a brain transplant. And who says McDavid's Legacy is over. For the love of anything good and pure!
He's 28 the clock is ticking
Amazing how immature "hockey fans" can be....
of which legacy do you speak
Why does TSN continually put on these stupid videos. What legacy? He's 27. Were you guys talking about his legacy when the Oilers lost in 2017 in like his second year?! Ridiculous
Secondly, what's with the absolute disrespect for Florida that you expect that McDavid, Draisaitl or anyone else should just be able to get 4 points a night against them.
Edmonton and Florida were the two best teams in the league and Florida one by one goal.
I agree with Gino to win mvp and be on the losing side is pretty amazing. It’s a building block for him.
TSN doing their best ESPCNN impression i see... Of course it didn't because I have two words, Steve Yzerman
It's nice how Florida gets no credit at all for shutting down him and Draisaitl.
McDavid and Draisaitl took themselves out more by being on the ice for far too long and often.
Florida will remember who they played to win their first trophy forever !!
Bryan, are you willing to eat crow if it’s revealed that he was injured in games 6 and 7?
No, because he wasn't injured in games 1-3, and they got fucked up right away
Was Giguere the captain?
I’d take Barkov at this point. I do think his lack of points in game 6 is not indicative of his impact (it’s actually an artifact of data-type). He learned over the year that he can’t put score his problems. He’s a better player this year and he’ll be better next year, but so will everyone else, so get ready…
Bryan Hayes is simply saying what every non-hockey fan sees from the outside. If McJesus were so great, why was he MIA in game 7? He’s the literal Lebron of the NHL. Don’t bother mentioning his name with Crosby or Ovechkin let alone 99.
What about a blemish on the Oiler's organization? McDavid needs depth behind him.
Crosby had no points in game 7 in 2009 and no one questioned his legacy at the time because the penguins won. If oilers won no one would care that McDavid had no points in game 7
There is no “legacy” without winning a Cup. He needs to win first. Scoring titles won’t matter without a Cup victory.
This definitely looked like this was mcdavids last cup run with Oilers
Disagree… merely the start of something great
Lot of flaws with the Oilers team. They need a better goalie or better depth to win. Cant just have 6 good players.
Until he wins the Cup he will be the Dan Marino of hockey. And he needs to do it in Edmonton.
Does Hayes think he's already retiring?
Reda won this argument but McDavid really didn’t show up in the biggest game of his career.
Poor Connor... he's getting Rick Nashed out here by Edmonton

His legacy wen't down though.... lol please.
Welcome Connor McDavid to the Tampa Bay lightning!
Thanks to him that we didn’t get the free pizza at Edmonton
First hand, there was a salary cap. and also We must not forget that there have been several good players in the national lines at the Hall of Fame and they did not win the Stanley Cup, that makes Mc David one of the very, very great players in the League nationally is everyone going to forget Carry Price's performances in Montreal I don't think so, I think he's going to be one of the greats and didn't win the cup.
Nah Canada loves hockey in a different way. We don't need the cup. The Oilers were by far the 'stars' of this playoff
