#Venezuela has had a territorial dispute with #Guyana, the small neighbouring country that has made major oil discoveries in recent years, for more than 100 years. The Venezuelan claim was frozen during the Bolivarian revolution, but now Nicolás Maduro has unleashed a fervent nationalist campaign, organised a referendum and escalated tensions to levels not seen in decades. Even the threat of military action is on the table.
But what exactly does the Chavista regime intend to do with this referendum, why all of a sudden so much interest in this issue, and how likely is it that an armed conflict could break out in the Essequibo? In this #VisualPolitik video we tell you all the details.

I love, just love that Venezuelans like to declare this as some anti-imperialist action. When their country only exists because of Spanish imperialism and that the population of Guyana is almost entirely made up of non-colonist peoples. Africans, Indians, and natives are the vast majority of the population with very few white people. It's also *totally* a coincidence that Guyana has become stinking rich and they decided to hold a referendum on taking that land 'back'.

    • @ham.strings

This is pretty rich considering Guyana wouldn't exist without the British *Empire*. Did you think people from India just... Appeared there? They weren't brought in for labour from... Another colony, owned by the same colonial power? But no, it is Venezuelans who are imperial for wanting back land that was forcibly taken from them from that same imperial power when Venezuela was already an independent nation. New host is good. 👍 However, this video fails to convey the difficulty associated with invading Essequibo -- even without outside intervention. Yeah, Venezuela has a huge advantage in personnel and hardware, but you can't just roll tanks into Amazon basin forest. Essequibo aint the farmlands of eastern Ukraine. Occupying and holding that large region is logistically difficult, and Venezuela's forces may be vulnerable to asymmetric tactics and ongoing harassment for a long period of time.

I think if Venezuela is to invade Guyana, it will provoke strong hostility in India, and very much, can alter India-Russia relations given Venezuela is supported by Russia. While India does not have capacity to aid Guyana, Guyana is held differently in India; it is not just a country, but it is also a deeply-connected nation for many Indians due to Guyana's strong Indian link with over 40% population are Indians and many Indian festivals are official in Guyana. Moreover, Guyana has always been seen as an innocent nation on the eyes of Indians, since Guyana has been neutral since independence, and many Guyanese are studying in India; by contrast, Venezuela is backed by Russia and this kind of fake referendum is not without Putin's guidance. Let's hope that Maduro won't go insane, but, since Maduro is Putin's little puppet, we should not expect much.

Not many people in India even know where Guyana is on the map. The Guyanese Indians might have strong connection to India. The Indian people do not have that same connection with the Guyanese people. Even though India has the capability to defend Guyana using its aircraft career and troops. India doesn't have a record of invading and attacking countries like the US or Europeans have. Yes, India did defend in the Maldives when Male was taken over insurgents or in Sri Lanka by supporting the LTTE.
But yes, with a nationalist right wing government in power, anything could be possible in India. But attacking Venezuela seems highly unlikely.

Guayana is a native American nation with many immigrant families. Venezuela isn't Grand Columbia or Spain. If we look at the symbolism of Guyana we understand. The native American national dish, golden Arrowhead flag, native presidential seal headress crown and native American name. Proudly British foundation and native American roots. If it wasn't for the British, the people of Guyana wouldn't have freedom or independence today as the empire ended slavery within 2 years of finally having full control of the territory.

Guyana is not a rich or developed country, yet it has been a rather peaceful nation since independence. The official name of Guyana is "Co-operative Republic", reflects Guyana's desire to stay neutral. That's why you never hear of Guyana joining anybody war, and Guyana didn't even support the US in Iraq, Afghanistan, and didn't even join sanction against Russia since its invasion of Ukraine. In term, Guyana is a perfect kid for both first and third world, the kid nobody cares nor harms him.
Now, Venezuela, run by Putin's puppets, is seeking for a war of conquest against Guyana, which is shocking at best. It is worth noting that Russian and Cuban mercenaries are present in Venezuela, and receive direct orders from Putin. If Venezuela is to invade, Guyana will have a hard time ahead due to its weaker military and the fact that Guyana is a neutral nation for decades. Guyana should rally necessary allies, such as the West, other Latin American countries, and especially, India and the Muslim world; the former is due to strong India tie (nearly half of Guyanese population are Indians), and the latter is due to the current Guyanese President being a Sunni Muslim, which is likely to galvanise Muslim world's support due to Guyana's largely peaceful nature. Guyana should use these advantages to deter Venezuela.

The potential invasion of Guyana by Venezuela is considered dangerous for several reasons:
    1. Border dispute: The invasion threat arises from a long-standing border dispute between Venezuela and Guyana. Both countries claim ownership of the Essequibo region, which borders Venezuela and contains significant oil and gas reserves. The dispute has escalated recently as Guyana started exploring and exploiting these resources, leading to increased tension between the two nations.
    2. Military imbalance: Venezuela has a significantly stronger military compared to Guyana. Venezuela possesses a larger standing army, advanced weaponry, and a military with greater experience in conflicts. In contrast, Guyana has a smaller and less-equipped military. This imbalance in military power increases the potential danger and puts Guyana at a significant disadvantage.
    3. Regional instability: An invasion of Guyana could lead to regional instability in South America. It may trigger a domino effect, leading to other countries becoming involved in the conflict. For instance, countries like Brazil and Colombia, which border both Venezuela and Guyana, may feel compelled to intervene or support Guyana due to concerns about territorial integrity and the potential spillover of violence.
    4. Economic impact: Guyana possesses immense natural resources, particularly oil reserves, which are crucial for its economic development. An invasion and subsequent disruption of oil production could have severe economic consequences for Guyana, as well as neighboring countries that rely on the stability of the region for trade.
    5. Diplomatic repercussions: An invasion by Venezuela would likely result in strong international condemnation and potential economic sanctions against Venezuela. It could strain diplomatic relations between Venezuela and other nations, triggering regional and global responses. Such repercussions could further exacerbate the political and economic crises already faced by Venezuela.
Overall, the potential invasion of Guyana by Venezuela poses significant risks, including the potential for military conflict, regional instability, economic disruption, and strained diplomatic relations. Certainly! Here are some further points on why the potential invasion of Guyana by Venezuela is considered dangerous:
    6. Humanitarian crisis: An invasion could result in the displacement of a significant number of people and create a humanitarian crisis. Refugees may flee from the conflict zone seeking safety and access to basic necessities such as food, water, and healthcare. This would further burden neighboring countries and strain regional resources.
    7. International law violations: An invasion would be a clear violation of international law, specifically the principles of territorial integrity and non-aggression. It could set a dangerous precedent for other countries with territorial disputes, undermining the stability of the international system and the sanctity of borders.
    8. Proxy war potential: The conflict between Venezuela and Guyana could attract the involvement of other countries seeking to exert influence or protect their own interests. This could potentially turn the situation into a proxy war, escalating the conflict and increasing the danger for both countries involved.
    9. Escalation of violence: If an invasion were to occur, it could quickly escalate into a full-scale war, as both countries could seek additional support from their allies. Such escalation would result in a greater loss of life, destruction of infrastructure, and devastation for the people living in the region.
    10. Impact on regional stability: The invasion could have a profound impact on the stability of the wider region. It could lead to the erosion of democratic institutions, exacerbate existing political divisions, and heighten tensions among neighboring countries. This would hinder regional cooperation and progress on issues such as trade, security, and development.
    11. Environmental consequences: The disputed region, the Essequibo, is known for its rich biodiversity and fragile ecosystem. Any military activities or disturbances caused during an invasion could result in significant environmental damage, affecting not only the local ecosystems but also impacting the wider region's ecology and natural resources.
In conclusion, the potential invasion of Guyana by Venezuela poses numerous dangers, including military conflict, regional instability, humanitarian crises, violations of international law, and environmental damage. Its consequences could extend beyond the two countries involved, affecting the broader region and potentially triggering a cascade of negative effects with severe and lasting ramifications.

Columbia is stable now afaik. But poverty, violence stays quite high with that kind of trend. So I wonder how this is playing into venezuela's situation... by that I mean think some big city doubling population in 20-30 years, how much tension and violence and all that is result of lack of housing, no daycare, not enough schools... simply due to insane population growth in relatively small time.

An attack on Venezuela would generate support from all the Hispanic American countries in South, Central and North America, not to mention the 40 million who live in the United States. The Essequibo is from Venezuela and LATAM, the English grafted 800 thousand Asians and Afros to create a fictitious country. A Latam joining the Brics would mean leaving the Westerners alone surrounded by their rivals. In 1982, England gave up attacking Argentina in the mainland because Ronald Reagan forbade them from doing so, telling them that there was a lot of support from the countries in the region for Argentina, yet an attack would cause a disaster and a generalized war in which all of Latam countries would unite supported by the USSR. Investigate Spain and Italy abstained from voting in favor of England and desisted from calling NATO against Argentina in Malvinas War 1982.

That will break the hegemony in trade and politics which makes the USA so rich. Beside that, US military complex accounts for a huge chunk of its GDP and workforce, cutting it would be quite a masochistic move
