#Venezuela has had a territorial dispute with #Guyana, the small neighbouring country that has made major oil discoveries in recent years, for more than 100 years. The Venezuelan claim was frozen during the Bolivarian revolution, but now Nicolás Maduro has unleashed a fervent nationalist campaign, organised a referendum and escalated tensions to levels not seen in decades. Even the threat of military action is on the table.
But what exactly does the Chavista regime intend to do with this referendum, why all of a sudden so much interest in this issue, and how likely is it that an armed conflict could break out in the Essequibo? In this #VisualPolitik video we tell you all the details.

I love, just love that Venezuelans like to declare this as some anti-imperialist action. When their country only exists because of Spanish imperialism and that the population of Guyana is almost entirely made up of non-colonist peoples. Africans, Indians, and natives are the vast majority of the population with very few white people. It's also *totally* a coincidence that Guyana has become stinking rich and they decided to hold a referendum on taking that land 'back'.

Yeah, Venezuela has a huge advantage in personnel and hardware, but you can't just roll tanks into Amazon basin forest. Essequibo aint the farmlands of eastern Ukraine. Occupying and holding that large region is logistically difficult, and Venezuela's forces may be vulnerable to asymmetric tactics and ongoing harassment for a long period of time.

If he invades Guyana, it wont be the Venezuelan army but Wagner Mercenaries, they are already recruited Cubans, and there are plenty of Former FARC Fighters in Colombian that are doing nothing after the peace treaty and have plenty of experience in Jungle warfare...and its all not for the Oil but for the gold and rare minerals deposits in Esequibo. Russian mining Companies are already in Venezuela exploiting the easy accessible deposits, even those in Indigenous protected areas...

I think if Venezuela is to invade Guyana, it will provoke strong hostility in India, and very much, can alter India-Russia relations given Venezuela is supported by Russia. While India does not have capacity to aid Guyana, Guyana is held differently in India; it is not just a country, but it is also a deeply-connected nation for many Indians due to Guyana's strong Indian link with over 40% population are Indians and many Indian festivals are official in Guyana. Moreover, Guyana has always been seen as an innocent nation on the eyes of Indians, since Guyana has been neutral since independence, and many Guyanese are studying in India; by contrast, Venezuela is backed by Russia and this kind of fake referendum is not without Putin's guidance. Let's hope that Maduro won't go insane, but, since Maduro is Putin's little puppet, we should not expect much.

Not many people in India even know where Guyana is on the map. The Guyanese Indians might have strong connection to India. The Indian people do not have that same connection with the Guyanese people. Even though India has the capability to defend Guyana using its aircraft career and troops. India doesn't have a record of invading and attacking countries like the US or Europeans have. Yes, India did defend in the Maldives when Male was taken over insurgents or in Sri Lanka by supporting the LTTE.
But yes, with a nationalist right wing government in power, anything could be possible in India. But attacking Venezuela seems highly unlikely.
Guayana is a native American nation with many immigrant families. Venezuela isn't Grand Columbia or Spain. If we look at the symbolism of Guyana we understand. The native American national dish, golden Arrowhead flag, native presidential seal headress crown and native American name. Proudly British foundation and native American roots. If it wasn't for the British, the people of Guyana wouldn't have freedom or independence today as the empire ended slavery within 2 years of finally having full control of the territory.

Guyana is not a rich or developed country, yet it has been a rather peaceful nation since independence. The official name of Guyana is "Co-operative Republic", reflects Guyana's desire to stay neutral. That's why you never hear of Guyana joining anybody war, and Guyana didn't even support the US in Iraq, Afghanistan, and didn't even join sanction against Russia since its invasion of Ukraine. In term, Guyana is a perfect kid for both first and third world, the kid nobody cares nor harms him.
Now, Venezuela, run by Putin's puppets, is seeking for a war of conquest against Guyana, which is shocking at best. It is worth noting that Russian and Cuban mercenaries are present in Venezuela, and receive direct orders from Putin. If Venezuela is to invade, Guyana will have a hard time ahead due to its weaker military and the fact that Guyana is a neutral nation for decades. Guyana should rally necessary allies, such as the West, other Latin American countries, and especially, India and the Muslim world; the former is due to strong India tie (nearly half of Guyanese population are Indians), and the latter is due to the current Guyanese President being a Sunni Muslim, which is likely to galvanise Muslim world's support due to Guyana's largely peaceful nature. Guyana should use these advantages to deter Venezuela.
Isn't there only a single road from Venezuela into Guyana and it crosses through Brazil? I don't see how war would even be possible. The border between the two is deep, undeveloped rainforest.

The Spanish created the general captaincy of Venezuela in 1777, and the borders were clear, but here the captaincy does not matter since after Venezuela became independent in 1811 those were its borders and the United Kingdom respected them until gold was discovered

The main reason the British were interested was that gold had been discovered on the river and they wanted it. Also, everyone still talks of african population boom but looking columbia and venezuela chart, theyve doubled population in last 50 years... unheard of too fast pace for any country, which explains lot of unstability and other problems. Columbia is stable now afaik. But poverty,violence stays quite high with that kind of trend. So I wonder how this is playing into venezuela's situation... by that I mean think some big city doubling population in 20-30 years, how much tension and violence and all that is result of lack of housing, no daycare, not enough schools... simply due to insane population growth in relatively small time.

I mean in a grand strategy sense as a American I think it would be wise to work with Venezuela in a peaceful annexation in exchange for reduced energy costs. If the US will stop enforcing their policy abroad (i.e. if they really stop supporting Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan etc) their competitors (Russia, China, Iran) will emerge as winners and gain a lot of political and economical leverage.

You can make claims to any past territory. My ancestors used to control land in England does that mean I'm entitled to it today? The reality is this is the world we live in now, right or wrong. Territorial disputes should be resolved peacefully. If people wish to form a new nation or join another they should do so of their own free will in a democratic way. If the people of Guyana wish to join Venezuela or give them territory that is up to them.
