    Guyana is one of the poorest countries in South America. However, huge oil deposits are being discovered in its waters. Forecasts indicate that by 2035 it could produce 1.5 million barrels per day. Guyana would therefore become the world's largest oil producer per capita. So the question is clear: Will the petrodollars boost Guyana's economic development and lift thousands of people out of poverty? Or will it become the new Venezuela? In this video we tell you about it.

      The funny thing with our Sovereign Wealth Fund is both parties failed to implement proper policies to replenish it after they took out from it ultimately leading to its sorry state. Regarding race politics the saddest thing as a young Trinidadian is that most people are interested in voting and people just came on voting for thing 1 and 2 not willing to try a third option. We could probably both agree that Tobago is different thing altogether on a local government level though its consistent support of PNM definitely does show a level of race based voting though it is iffy.
      I hope Guyana's similar political situation doesn't chain it to and make it a slave to oil and gas like Trinidad and Tobago.

      @Rman775 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Trinidad and Tobago's sovereign wealth fund has not been depleted, in fact it still has billions of US dollars in its coffers and continues to grow everyday. What has happened is that the fund was used over the past couple of years to plug budget holes that arose due to the drop in hydrocarbon prices. I would argue that this is exactly why the fund was set up in the first place.
      Racial politics however is indeed a sad feature of the society and I highly doubt T&T or Guyana for that matter will divert from this course anytime soon.

    its interesting to see our little obscure country making appearances more and more in pop media. i remember back in the original days with simon this chanel did something on guyana. born and grown in guyana for nearly 30 years. currently i dont have much hope for the country despite the oil. currently there is lots and lots (more than any time) of "superficial development" roads ..... plans for mega bridges massive hotels and so on...but socio economically the country is crap..... lawlessness everywhere. the police is underpaid corrupt and grossly ineffective, same with the fire service. our health sector is supposedly public....but if u have money you might as well go private ...... going to the public hospitals is a sentence of absolute misery and years long trauma ( id know) ..... the people (generally) has a very lawless attitude..... feely litering the streets and the "public transport" (mini busses run by private individuals) is atrocious with usual loud, vulgar music and very careless and wreckless on the roadways. out utiliites are poor with the worse offener by far being electricity. funnily enough we just a few hours ago recovered from a multi hour long black out afftecting more than 60% of the country all becuz one truck hit a wooden utility pole. i id you not its not eaggerating. for you americans imagine a blackout from NY, down the whole east coast, tru texas and AZ and then hitting california too ..... all cuz one truck hit a power pole. ... yep.... dont even get me started with what the cost of living is like. i mean we already pay 47% taxes. i know second hand of a low level employee at one of the biggest companies in the country .... her monthly pay barely covers her RENT. dont even ask me how she manages to get food and pay her bills and guess what ? she isnt even that bad off, relatively speaking. so yes.

Imagine FUSION is magically available in an the form a small cereal box sized engine available at Home Depot that can power a truck for 100 years for the cost of $1,000. How long does it take until everyone is using those engines? . . . We know because we went thru this before with coal being replaced by petroleum. The answer is 40 years. So even if the world you describe were real and here, it's still 40 years until the new energy technology fully permeates the economy.
      My friend, it ain't gonna happen.

    Concerning the Amaila hydropower plant: it was not scrapped because of cost. Reportedly the falls dry up frequently and the contractors were charging more than double. The road leading to the plant was awarded to someone without suitable experience.

    This is a very interesting opportunity for Guyana and the world. By this time, we have ample historical examples of exploitation, kleptocracy, and state waste of natural resources. For the Guyanese, this is an opportunity to recognize the history of others and avoid it. For the U.S., it makes sense to promote a stable government in the hemisphere. I don't think Guyana has anything to worry about from Venezuela. They are broke and their military can easily be squashed with U.S. assistance. The only other threat comes from possible exploitation from the big oil companies and this is where the amount of press attention can help Guyana. If their actions are under a microscope, the U.S., EU, and Chinese oil giants will be less apt to cause mischief. The biggest risk is probably internal. Can the Guyanese get their act together?

    • @davidford3115

    Thank you for your podcast on Guyana, I am a Guyanese/American who joined with so many hundreds of thousands who has fled this Country for greener pastures abroad, though America isn't what many expected, you have piece of mind, and anyone or almost everyone, can live comfortably on what they earn and can even save a little for tough times that may arise. In Guyana you couldn't do that, in fact your earnings can barely meet your needs, much less, but I wish this Country all the best, it's failures could be the leadership and how they manage it's finances and share the wealth amongst it's poor population.

      Simplistic. Think a little harder. Explain why the same people ended up as indentured servants. Explain the sociological context of being an immigrant who has experienced other parts of the world. Explain the success of Afro-Guyanese in Canada, the UK, and the US.

    • @itfeltsoreal

      @@stevensmith2078 Success is never guaranteed. Many Afro-Guyanese in countries such as the USA and Canada are doing well simply because of better opportunities and resources provided by those counties. Many people from Nigeria and Indians from India live in abject poverty. But most do very well if they come to a country like the USA or Canada. Why? The answer is simple. You don’t need to “think harder” for something so simple. Indian Guyanese make the largest ethnic group of Guyana, so they represent more of the success stories there. As well as the significant amounts of the poverty and high suicide rates (highest in South America).
