    The single most important thing for avoiding a climate disaster is cutting carbon pollution from the current 51 billion tons per year to zero, says philanthropist and technologist Bill Gates. Introducing the concept of the "green premium" -- the higher price of zero-emission products like electric cars, artificial meat or sustainable aviation fuel -- Gates identifies the breakthroughs and investments we need to reduce the cost of clean tech, decarbonize the economy and create a pathway to a clean and prosperous future for all. (This virtual conversation, hosted by TED Global curator Bruno Giussani, was recorded in March 2021.)
    Countdown is TED's global initiative to accelerate solutions to the climate crisis. The goal: to build a better future by cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030, in the race to a zero-carbon world. Get involved at countdown.ted.com/sign-up

It isn't strong but it does sequester co2, it is breathable and temperature regulating, it is mold and mildew resistant, it is fire proof, it is pest resistant, and it does get stronger as it ages. So we can replace sheet rock and insulation by building with hempcrete. There is also hemp wood, hemp plaster, and on and on.

      This is my problem with Gates' plan: It doesn't propose any fundamental shift in the way we relate to the planet. We can keep driving cars they just need to be electric. We can still eat burgers they just need to be 'impossible" burgers. We can still run our air conditioners they just need to be solar powered. We can still build with concrete it just needs to be "green" concrete. We can still cut down forests they just need to be "sustainably" managed. We can still fly airplanes they just need to use bio-fuels. Basically: we can still live the way we live today and consume what we consume... we just make those products "green". Gates' proposals are much easier to accept than more "radical" changes. But sooner or later we will be forced to make "radical" changes to the way we live. Gates' ideas are not the way to avoid climate disaster. They are a clever marketing strategy aimed at consumers who are awakening to the unfolding climate disaster.

But this is going to have negative impacts on some other regions. For example, if we just spend a lot of energy producing more clouds by evaporating sea water, this can also result in rain and flooding on some regions. I like the option of flooding the Qattara Depression in Egypt for example, but this is not without risk and long term consequences.

    • @sungjinpark3535
      @sungjinpark3535 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thats still up for debate. Nuclear may not be the answer, but one of the answers. It comes down to are the people going to be ok with living near a nuclear power plant? If you think people are overreacting, maybe you are under estimating the power of human error. I wish nuclear was the clear cut answer like Tony Stark’s arc reactor. As in perfecting nuclear energy will help us accelerate our human growth, however, you seriously have to consider the cost of a potential hazard.
