  • The State Historical Museum in Moscow is the most famous museum of national history in Russia. It is located in a building built in 1883, which architecturally borrows heavily from Old Russian architecture, in the center of Moscow on the northwest side of Red Square. Today, the museum is considered the largest museum of the history of Russia. Its holdings include a total of about 4.5 million exhibits from various thematic areas and eras.
There are 16 specialized departments, for example, the archaeological department contains various finds on the Russian territory from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages; in the precious metals department, products of Russian jeweler's art from the 11th to the 20th centuries can be viewed; the numismatics department offers insights into a 1.7 million-piece collection of historical coins, banknotes, medals and orders, while the fine arts department houses a total of about 500,000 paintings, watercolors, lubki, engravings, sculptures and photographs. There are also departments of wooden products and furniture, Old Russian painting, cartography, book-making, metal crafts, weapons, written documents, manuscripts (various collections, including the Synodal Collection), glass and ceramics, fabrics, furthermore a scientific archive.
In addition to the exposition in the main building, the Historical Museum also includes the nearby St. Basil's Cathedral (since 1928), the Moscow Novodevichy Monastery (since 1934), and the Lenin Museum (since 1993), located in the immediate vicinity of the main building. The Lenin Museum was founded in 1924 a few months after the death of the revolutionary leader and was considered one of the most ideologically important museums in the country during the Soviet period.
Several times a year, the museum also hosts special exhibitions that often go beyond the thematic areas of Russian history. For example, from August to September 2007, a permanent exhibition focused on the history, present and future of railroad construction in Russia; from December 2006 to April 2007, there was an exhibition on love and eroticism in ancient art; and from July to October 2004, the museum held an art and history exhibition related to the 2004 Olympic Games.
The areas of the State Historical Museum
    1) Hallway
The first area you will enter is the ceremonial hallway. The family tree of the Romanov dynasty is painted on the ceiling. In total you will find 68 portraits of the family.
    2) The first floor with halls 1 - 21
On the first floor you will find halls 1 to 21. They are very luxuriously furnished and were created by the architects for the opening of the museum. The halls show the history of Russia from its beginnings to the reign of Peter the Great (1682 - 1725).
    3) The 1st floor with halls 22 - 36
On the second floor of the History Museum are halls 22 to 36, showing the periods of the reign of Tsar Peter the Great to Tsar Alexander III. (1845 - 1894). These halls are rather discreetly decorated because they were built after the opening of the History Museum. By the way, in the 25th hall there is the entrance to the reading room with a manuscript compartment.
    4) The 2nd floor
On the second floor there are temporary exhibitions dedicated to different themes. You can find out directly at the cash desk which exhibition is currently on in this area.
    5) The mail rooms
You will find the entrance to the mail rooms in the hallway. In the letter rooms there are exhibitions of workpieces made of gold. The letter rooms consist of 3 halls:
Room "A" has the nickname "Metal of the Gods" (originally "Byzantine Room"). This hall is an imitation of the Hagia-Sophia in Istanbul. In the first part of the hall are icons and religious objects of ancient Russian art of Orthodox Russia. In the second part of the hall monuments from the 12th - 14th centuries of other religions are exhibited.
Hall "B" has the nickname "Metal of the tsars and symbol of power". This hall
contains gold nuggets, the state etalons of weight and length, coins, medals, orders and weapons.
Salon "W" has the nickname "Symbol of wealth and luxury". This hall presents you jewelry made of gold from antiquity to the 20th century.

The State Historical Museum right on Moscow's Red Square offers a comprehensive insight into Russian history from the mammoth ice ages to the 19th century. With more than 4.5 million exhibits and about 14 million documents, the museum is certainly one of Russia's greatest treasures. Which is currently your favorite museum? Let me know below in the comments!
