Why won't China call the Myanmar coup a coup? | DW News

  • When the military seized power in Myanmar on February 1, detaining elected officials, including the country's de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi, Chinese state media avoided calling the coup a coup - instead reporting on a "major cabinet reshuffle."
Some anti-coup protesters have since accused Beijing of supporting the coup and the junta.
Demonstrations have been staged in front of the Chinese Embassy in Yangon.
So - what are China's interests in Myanmar? And what does this mean for international efforts to stop the bloodshed in the country?

Not even comparable. China (CCP) actually is one of the main suppliers of the Burmese military, they invest in the country and thus they have projects in the country that are of important interest to them. Also, China is a neighbour of Myanmar. Coming up with a hypothetical scenario involving Germany and Bolivia makes no sense because Bolivia isn't tied to Germany in the way Myanmar is tied to China and Germany is not a neighbour of Bolivia, it's on a whole different continent.

You are right. America does support military regimes that are not worthy of support. But America has been getting better! Think to the 1950s, in which America supported tons of military dictatorships in Latin America be throughout the world, even overthrowing democracies when they leaned too far left. However, America has gotten and is getting better. Think of apartheid South Africa. America supported it for decades until the late 1980s, because America realized it was bad and stopped supporting it. Now, in the modern world, yes, America supports a couple bad oppressive dictators (cough cough Saudi Arabia), but the real shift has been that these dictators who once could rely on the U.S. simply have flocked to either Russia, China, or Iran.

@Roy W However flawed they are addressing it, the U.S. still has taken actions against the junta though. China, ASEAN, and India are the actual regional players that could influence the regime, and out of them, India is the only one who has really bothered to do anything. I think the U.S. should do more, but there is only so much it can do. Many around the world expect the U.S. to address every crisis in the world, but it simply can’t. The U.S. is simply not that powerful, and as a democracy, it can’t really take unilateral action without the support of its people, and the fact of the matter is that most Americans can’t even name Myanmar on a map.

When civilian government tried to reduce the Chinese debts, this is what happened.
It’s more easier for CPC to deal with authoritarian military dictators than civilian democratic government. Military juntas needs protection in international stage for their crimes against citizens of Myanmar, while CPC wants to expend their infrastructure networks, another shorter access to sea and in need of another lackey, who will not think twice of selling their resources at cheap prices. CPC instilled wars in western Myanmar to develop and operate big port and major gas pipelines, CPC instilled wars in north and north east Myanmar to create buffer zones and steal natural resources at the same time. CPC instilled civil war in all of Myanmar and selling weapons to both sides, so that they can create another puppet state that will surround their regional rival India.
CPC and their puppets Myanmar Juntas are the real enemies of all citizens of Myanmar.

The people of Myanmar have pleaded and many have lost their lives, the Myanmar UN representative himself risked his life to plead for help, just to be shut down. They use the excuse that they don't want to interfere in internal affairs, even after being asked to. China is only worried about self gain in this situation. I can already see the replies to this comment too, "but no other counties worry about self gain". I'd like to say that obviously other countries are always looking for self gain, but its not an excuse to let this happen. You don't justify somones actions because other people have done it. Even if China does not want to help, they should at least allow others to do so. As they wait and allow citizens to be murdered by their own military.
