  • Bluefin is a tale of epic stakes set in “the tuna capital of the world,” North Lake, Prince Edward Island, Canada. The film explores the baffling mystery of why the normally wary bluefin tuna no longer fear humans. Local fishermen swear tuna are so starving and abundant now that they will literally eat out of people’s hands like pets. But something is not right. One thing is certain: this sudden and incredible abundance of tuna off their shores flies in the face of scientific assessments claiming endangered stocks are down by 90 percent. With stunning cinematography, director John Hopkins documents this mystery and brings the issues into sharp focus. At the heart of this documentary lies a passionate concern by all about the fate of the giant bluefin tuna.

Can't think of a better way to exterminate a fishery than by over harvesting the tuna's food, the herring and then over harvesting what's left of the tuna stocks themselves.. Horrible management.

What a unique opportunity to have witnessed this feeding experience. What I would be worried is when the pouching gets really out hand and the town corruption starts to show it’s cards and turns into the phrase I wish we would have never exploited this brood stock phenomenon in our own back yard. I would make your money taking people out to feed the giant tunas as a tour guid.

These fisherman are very nearsighted. Just because they live where these beautiful fish come to feed. Guess no one remembers the codfish fishery. Boom and bust, really smart fisherman look at the global statistics not whats in their backyard.

Knowing that sports fishing and exploitation of natural resources is the “American way” is heartbreaking . Knowing the cultures of fish consumption in Japan and other countries and seeing the extreme misdirection of resources and environmental conservation is sad as can be.

Prince Edward island looks like my ideal paradise. I could be born, raised and die there without ever having to go anywhere else in the world. Love the small town feel. The love and sense of well being only a small town can give you. I grew up and continued to live in a small New Mexico USA town and felt those same feelings. I was a police officer there for years after high school. I eventually moved away to a bigger city and all the small town feel was lost.

Well, after watching a boat load of episodes of "Wicked Tuna", fish get broken off, pretty much on a regular basis
Catch and release must be traumatic and give the fish PTSD!

Blue fin tuna have also turned up in massive numbers off the UK. We are occasionally seeing some absolutely massive fish as well., maybe this is a world wide resurgence? My theory locally is that the smaller pelagic species, such as herring and mackerel are no longer over fished so there is a substantial food source for the tuna here. My worry is that quotas will be allowed to land and these wonderful fish and will be decimated again.

    • @SquareDealProd

Mackerel and herring stocks have collapsed in Atlantic Canada from overfishing for lobster bait. Fishing now banned for these forage fish. 59% of the tuna off Atlantic Canada are actually Eastern Tuna, though they look the same. Stocks mixing, looks like a great deal, but it's all that's left, yet fisheries managers like DFO falsely claiming victory and they have tragically and vastly increased quotas at ICCAT since 2016. All commercials fisheries have collapsed. Only lobster left. But that fishery will also collapse soon as you can't catch them without bait.

Fisheries management is a primary issue as is ignorance, greed and just being evil. There are many more ecological "crimes" happening out there that are similar to overfishing the Herring stocks.

The commercial rod and reel industry could be truly sustainable if fishermen sustainably released the large breeding tuna and there was a size (length) limit preserving the most genetically robust and mature bluefin breeders (like is done tor salmon and trout). In Canada, nobody fishing tuna on quota wants that. They want to kill and conquer the biggest ones for the thrill and vanity photos standing beside fish (too often still alive) hung up in public spectacle on the wharf. It is important to note smaller fatty tuna fetch far more money in Japan so it makes no sense to kill the big ones at all. But now the Japanese market for Canadian tuna has sunk as they do not want the skinny starving tuna we are often seeing now (having also decimated the tuna’s food - mackerel and herring for roe sushi and lobster bait).
Hook and release charters adds additional pressure on stocks and many tuna die from being mishandled or trailing broken line; overheated bluefin after a battle can sink to the bottom and are never reported as a death. There is something called the “swimming hook” invented in Canada which allows the fish to be towed behind the boat until it properly revives. And then with a tug of a second rope instantly releases it in good shape to survive. This should be mandatory for hook and release charters but it’s not. Fishing with circle hooks is not enough.

Consumerism and what happened from the 60's onwards in the pursuit of money is beyond reproach. Catch and release in the same place day after day is short sighted. I love the facts presented, but your constant anti-human rants just turn me off

To tell the truth our Creator gave every creature on earth 🌎 walking on land and below the sea 🌊 and different bodies of waters of the world 🌎 their own food to live off of and us human beings suppose to really eat off the land that we all walk on earth amongst one another on we call land, and the other creatures who are living below the waters 🌊 of the world 🌎 the Creator gave them their own food to eat that's other fish and other things that's at the bottom of the water 💦 and us human beings have our own food to eat on land like different kinds of animals and plants and things that grow from trees because I could be right or wrong when I say this but what if it's wrong for us human beings to be eating an animal that's a creature just like ourselves are but they will eat a human being and another animal just like a fish 🐟 will eat another fish 🐟 in the water 💦 and even a human being So that's why I say it's nothing wrong with catching fish in the water 💦 or a animal walking on land just like we all are but that's always been a hard question for me to answer and understand, how about you all in the world 🌎 what you think about that yourself because I would like to know but I really believe when you say it's right it could be wrong and when we say it's wrong it could be right and it's all a Magic Trick and test of our faith just to see 👀 if we all really appreciate the gift of life our Creator allowed all of us to be apart of as 1 creation building Family life on earth 🌎 and to see 👀 if we will give thanks to our Creator before eat or do anything in life if we all really appreciate the gift of life our Creator allowed all of his creation to be apart of as 1 creation building Family life on earth 🌎 and that's it's a spiritual world 🌎 we all are apart of that's bigger than you and I and that's why we suppose to talk to our Creator the one and only power over all thing's and who created all thing's our eye's 👀 see before we do anything in life if we respect our Creator and appreciate the gift of life that was given to all of us on So call earth 🌎 to be apart of as 1 creation that none of us created but was created by the one and only power that created all thing's our eye's 👀 see 👀 So what do you have to say world 🌎 about this yourself because we are 1 creation? Why can't we have a size limit you can only keep fish weighing between 80 to 150 lbs the rest has to be release before they come out of the water

That's all nice good and it's the right thing to do. But unfortunately, the world is a vampire. You got too many people with too many different agendas and too many people with greed. Greed greed, greed. Greed, it's just the way it is. There's not enough people out there to watch what's really going on and control it. Because there's too much greed involved
