- In this video we’re reviewing what may be the most exclusive vineyard in the world - Le Montrachet, which is planted with 100% Chardonnay grapes. We look at some of the history and characteristics of the vineyard, and we review some of the ownership structure and producers. We ask what makes this vineyard produce perfect expressions of the Chardonnay grape? To try a Montrachet wine, we chose to open a bottle of 2011 Montrachet made by Marc Colin et Fils. The 2011 Marc Colin Montrachet costs about $1,400 and we question whether any Chardonnay is worth such a price. Our expert sommelier, Stacey Land, helps us taste this brilliant wine. The video includes original footage from the Montrachet vineyard along with some shots and maps which highlight how Montrachet differs from its neighboring Grand Cru
vineyards - Batard Montrachet and Chevalier Montrachet.

B grounds everything.. as much as one can when this is home and dad has a 20k(ish) magnum saved for her wedding. I'm mostly just jealous from a higher cost of living city so a nice house is 7x more expensive so we can't have the cellar it all goes to the mortgage payment.
@@GraemeHein can't effort to give 20,000 bottle of wine for my daughter's wedding. I did find a bottle of 1992 (the year my daughter was born) Chateau Leoville Barton for her wedding, in case that bottle may turn bad. I bought a bottle a year since 2009 just in case.

I love Burgundy, and it's like 80% of what I drink. Premox has been getting better in the last few years, but you still gotta know which producers to avoid in certain years. Some of the best and most reliable producers are Coche Dury, Arnaud Ente (my personal favorite), D'Auvenay, Pierre Yves Colin Morey, Raveneau, Paul Pillot, Benoit Moreau, Antoine Jobard, Lamy Caillat, Pierre Vincent Girardin, and Roulot.
Leflaive is also top-notch, but just like Sauzet and Ramonet, there's a big chunk of time when their wines weren't reliable.

I buy Chablis to cellar as for some reason I have never had a pre-moxed bottle. I prefer the ones whose elevage is completely done in stainless steel.
I have been fortunate enough to taste some Montrachet but only the lesser makers not Leflaive or DRC.
I funnily enough prefer Chevalier Montrachet as it doesn’t get as “ fat” as Le Montrachet.

@@OurPourDecisionsif you think that’s difficult try opening an Imperial Bottle of wine , I had an imperial of chateau La Laguna , The late Queen mothers favourite wine , and as a retired chef I know this as I once cooked a private lunch for her , and I ended up using three cork screws in the cork at different angles .🏴
Hi 🏴 We have wonderful Dinner parties at Christmas for our very dearest friends, we open an Imperial bottle of wine 🍷 ( 8 normal size in one imperial) then decant it into Aprox eight decanters , and still have one third left which we leave on the table in the bottle , then after the Dinner our friends all sign the label , and it goes on display to be appreciated with all the other years bottles , it’s a great way too remember past years and looks great too ❤🏴

A few years ago I bought 6 bottles of Chablis Vaudésir (GC) for $3 each. The label said it was a cooking wine because it was oxidized. But 3 of those bottle were almost perfect. The best Chablis I ever had.

Oh - I like Monrachet! And Marc Colin is a great producer - and in some manner - even somehow 'affordable' - in one can say this in that case.

I've had Montrachet several times. Personally, the ones I have tried were not worth the price in my opinion, as I found them to be too rich and lacking enough acid. I tend to prefer Chevalier or Batard as they tend to be less rich while offering ample acidity. Sadly, Montrachet is so pricey now, most wine lovers will never get to try a bottle.
I attended an amazing white burgundy tasting in Beverly Hills in 1986. Tasted 1982s: the Domaine Laflaive Batard-Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet, Puligny-Les Pucelles, Clos de Vougeot Blanc, Latour Corton-Charlemagne, Montrachet - Laguiche, AND the 1978 Montrachet - Domaine de La Romanée-Conti

My order of the Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Clos St Jean Blanc Domaine Paul Pillot 2022 is still in Burgundy. Hopefully it will arrive in the country soon, latest , some time in 2025.
Here’s a rare wine, which I just picked up. Marie-Thérèse Chappaz Grain Pinot. All the way from the Valais region of Switzerland near lake Geneva.
Really enjoy your videos as I've always wanted to see people try the super cult wines, and I, like many other, cannot afford them, so this is a real treat.
I've had a pleasure to try some premier cru Chassagne-Montrachet (old and young) and I distinctly remember very intense gasoline, creamy notes (from malo), hay and minerals. For a Grand Cru like the Marc Colin Et Fils, there should have been a lot more oak influence? Didn't really see it mentioned in the video. Also, usually with these great burgundies, they tend to evolve over time (I know it's a cliche), but I think it would have been cool to see you guys try it at opening, and then in 30 min intervals. It really should change!
I also really liked the Screaming Eagle vs. Harlan comparison video. For burgundy, if you have the opportunity, maybe trying different tiers of wines from the same producer (village, premier cru, grand cru) would have been interesting. Just a suggestion.

Btw - the Marc Colin did change over time. Felt like it "put on weight" - if that makes any sense.
Great to experience this with you. It might be worth asking Stacey in these situations if there are comparable wines at a lower price point anywhere in the world. This would be interesting for us mere mortals that wouldn’t spend $1k on a bottle but want to have a similar experience.
It's a great point and we'll try to get into that later down the road. There are most certainly many wines with far better QPR.
I'm sure it's great wine, and as yummy as it gets, but for me, it's never price/quality OK. BTW great video, I enjoyed a lot!
You're right about price/quality ratio - it's absurd. However, it's great fun to experience (and share).

55-60 degrees seems a little high to me, but I assume Stacey knows what she’s doing. I’d be looking around 48. Interesting to know what it would be like a bit colder.
Your challenge to Stacey now should be to find a wine that is 90% there but $100-$200 a bottle. Other parts of Burgundy must have them. Santenay? Savigney?
48 degrees sounds good as well. Generally speaking, I think many people drink good white wine too cold and you really lose some of the nuances in great wines.
There are plenty of good $100-200 wines out there and we hope to cover some of them one day.
I would love to see a Grand Cru Montrachet in a head-to-head with an "American Montrachet" like Kongsgaard The Judge, Peter Michael Point Rouge, or Aubert Lauren.

@@OurPourDecisions Visiting burgundy makes it very clear how it works. Clos Veougeot is owned by over 50 owners back 20 years ago .
Those who want to try white Burgundy that don’t have Montrachet money (who does?), there is some brilliant wine from the producers who make Chablis Grand Cru and Premier Cru. You can buy some ravishing Chardonnay for well under $100 there.

For me, Burgundy can be such a crapshoot when spending top dollar that I am far happier to spend $50-100 on a bottle of Meursault and find it delicious than to drop 500 bones on a Bienvenues-Batard that though incredible, will never live up to the expectations set by its price.
I would agree the prices are completely out of whack. It's not because they are so much better but because there's limited supply. Even the good Meursaults and Chassagne-Montrachets are getting expensive.
Maybe you stumbled into it but Marc Colin is a fantastic producer. There St. Aubin wines are fantastic. Especially En Moncteau, $60 give or take and great values for sure
Thanks for a great suggestion. Stumbled upon Marc Colin at "Vossevangen Park Hotel" in Norway a couple of years ago. [Used to be one of the greatest wine cellars in northern Europe btw - might still be.] The sommelier recommended a '03 Marc Colin Batard Montrachet and it was absolutely fantastic.
Ah yes... had the 1985 DRC Montrachet decades ago !!! Was $250 per bottle back then !!!

Cheers all!! Is burgundy worth the price? Depends on the producer and if the buyer/drinker thinks it is. One thing that really stands out in Burgundy (and most other regions) is drinking the producer, not the vineyard. I am a drinker, I do not buy to resell. I’ve been fortunate to have tried grand crus of very esteemed names. But, great producers make great wines no matter the level and I’ve had village wines I’d put up against many grand crus. I do enjoy burgundies, whites, reds, cremants across all the appellations. Thank you for a great introduction to Montrachet.

New to the channel but really liking it so far. Not big on whites but you definitely peaked my interest. Also you are not alone when it comes to sub par experiences when it comes to burgundy. Been there done that with the reds. Very frustrating from time to time but in the last 10-15 years or so I find there has been improvement. Great video once again. Cheers!

IMHO, the most thrilling dry white wines from France are not from burgundy. They hail from Clos Ste Hune in Alsace.
Another legendary vineyard. I would love to do an episode on that one day. Very distinct.
