Effects of AGING? 3 Vintages of HAUT BRION!

- Why do wine collectors age wine? In this video, we explore the effects of aging on great wines, specifically Château Haut-Brion, which is a First Growth Bordeaux. We try three different vintages: 2019 (which is practically brand new!), 2005 (aged more than 17 years), and 1990 (aged more than 30 years). How will they compare to each other? How do tannins, mouthfeel, and flavors change over time in red wine? And are the rewards worth the wait? Watch our video to find out with us! We also invited one of our favorite sommeliers, Stacey, to help us navigate this experiment.
Cheers!

We are incredibly fortunate to have this channel on the Internet. Bravo! Please, please please continue
An exmaplary father-daughter wine-relationship I wish to have some day. Love seeing you fill the cellar with lots of great wines... love even more that you are filling it with lots of love and sharing with many. So blessed! ❤❤❤
Love your show! Fun, light and informative. I have a 2015 Haut-Brion waiting for me, so will require some patience… cheers!
Cheers! It'll be amazing when it's ready.
We need to see the ‘89 bottle soon!!
You’re all so lucky to try such stunning wines. There is nothing better than pulling an aged bottle out of the cellar and enjoying it.
I’d say lucky only if he had found the bottles under his bed. I’m pretty sure he has worked very hard to get to where he is and to be able to enjoy his passion with his daughter.
What an awesome vertical. I love that you are constantly tasting top notch years and sharing it with us. I’m loving your channel. Keep the great bottles coming.
Well done! Most of us can only dream of such a vertical. At least we get to live it thru your experience, thank you!
I've been watching you guys for about 2 months.....I have a small (vinotemp) wine storage unit / dual climate / holds about 140 bottles / I am 95% a "big bold red" type....Cab's, Syrah, Bordeaux, Pinot Noir, Malbec...have begun to delve into Italian Reds recently....I really enjoy your channel but am super perplexed on how you acquire many of your tastings, ie, Harlan & Screaming Eagle.....I do love the fact that you are "fearless" in opening much of the absolutely classic & cult wines that I could only dream of tasting....where are you guys located? Your wine room is stunning and the Somm that you frequently have on the tastings add's an element of authenticity to the process! I salute you and what you offer your viewers!
Most wines are acquired upon release and some are purchased later from reputable retailers. If I buy anything at auction, it's usually in OWC and from an identified consignor (the auction houses will do that for large collections). Provenance is key and occasionally I'll end up with a bad bottle. It's life.
This show is so amazing. I look forward to seeing each episode.
I had a 1982 in my cellar that we enjoyed 2 years ago. Amazing!
I'd love to try that one day. Wow!
Well made and entertaining show. Very informative and easy to be consumed by all kinds of viewers, both with knowledge about wine or not. Keep it up guys!
Another very fun and informative post. Thank you!! And a great age worthy bottle of wine needs to be great when it goes into the bottle. Out of balance is not going to be fixed with time. I love the primary fruit in a young Bordeaux with a nice decant, but sitting back with a bottle that has seen real history is amazing. The oldest I’ve had so far is a 74 LaTour. It was past its prime, but you could taste what it used to be. Some of the wines I’ve had the person who put it in the bottle never got to taste it. Such a generational mind set that they made the wines for grandchildrens children. So cool.
It's true - making wine for future generations...so cool. I'm lucky to share these moments with B. - Pops
Super cool; love finding out new things!
Thanks guys… love the show!
Excellent video. I have 2016 Haut Brion for sale, rather good vintage. Will definitely keep one for myself to open up!
I have a 2006 that I’ll be keeping for a while yet, but hopefully it’s amazing. The oldest wine that I’ve ever had was a 1986 Opus One that I had in 2018, and really liked it. The age really made it stand out in my opinion. In two to three weeks I’ll be opening a 1964 Chateau Palmer for my sisters 60th birthday. Hopefully it’s good.
The '06 will need some time for sure. the '64 Palmer sounds like an amazing opportunity to try something special. Hope it's a great bottle!
The OG 1st growth! Witnessing the satisfaction on your faces from the 1990 was priceless. Also I very much appericate your uploading time. This is now my traditional week-end kickoff. A nice virtual cheer. Thank you! 🎉
Thank you for such a great comment - love it!
Stunning ! One of the best wines I've ever had was from a couple of years ago... 1998 Haut Brion ! Great Sauternes can easily age 20-50 years, or more !!!!
Yes, Sauternes are legendary for aging well.
you should've done a blind tasting!!!!! so interesting and joyful to watching, though 😊
Thanks! please keep this going.
We got a lot of suggestions for blind tastings with the Margaux wines at different price points. We should have done it for that video for sure. Price point bias is real and documented. This was slightly different - no apparent bias and the wines were so different it would have been impossible not to identify each of them.
Bea is hilarious and I am really enjoying your channel. Keep it up, I am a pretty big wine nerd and this is superb. Salut'
Love the channel! Would love to see a video on your favorite Brunellos
B - great job on the editing and filming. Already from a couple episodes ago the cringiness of the scriptedness has become a lot less. Continue working at it! It's just a conversation with your viewers ;)
Honestly love that you guys have the voice overs that have more historical/flavor references. Very tasteful for a wine channel.
Now I want to see some Italian wines!
Really good and interesting episode! I visited Haut Brion last summer and paid a small fortune for a tasting of their cheaper wines. Hoping to try the flagship one day 😊
Haven't had the chance to visit yet - hope to be able to go there soon!
Very exciting tasting, thanks for sharing!!
Nice video BTW. Another wine suggestion which is loved by wine geeks around the world is Chateau Musar. Try to pick up some aged bottles of the Red. What makes this wine so interesting is that the flaws which become evident with age are what makes the wine so great. Try and get hold of a 99, 98, 97 or 03. Again unique but so so good. You are clearly passionate about wine so I think you’ll enjoy these and it will take you away from 1st growth focus
Agree. I've blind tasted old vintages of Musar against Bordeaux and confused them.
I've always wanted to try that wine. Great suggestion!
Thanks for sacrificing the 2019 just to educate your audience! Very cool showing the map, did not know La Mission was right next Haute and in the middle of Boudreaux. It’s great when you learn something new watching these videos. In April I had a ‘98 La Mission to celebrate our Anniversary and it was ‘stinky’ on the nose and had muscle. I couldn’t stop smelling it. If it was cologne I’d wear it JK 😂. But it was ‘heaven in a glass’, looking forward to having Haute Brion. Thank you 👊🏻
Excellent show!
I love you guys and learn a lot from your show. Keep it up 👍
Side by sides are so fun. we did a 2008 and 2009 Dom perignon a year or two ago and it was so crazy to see how different they were even at a young age. also did a 82 and 86 DP and it was lightyears away
That sounds like a blast. Sounds like an idea for a future episode...
Great videos, keep it up
Assuming you get a bottle, it will be interesting to see how the 1989 Haut-Brion compares to the 1990. Another wine channel rated the '89 over 100 points.
Yeah, I'd like to try it one day. One of the issues with the '89 Haut Brion is that it's one of the most traded bottles in the wine industry, which means that provenance becomes really challenging. I'm working on it....:-)
I love the graphics! Where do you get these maps from?!
Great vertical tasting. I have some 2016 in my cellar aging. I want to get some 2010 so I don’t have to wait another lifetime before I can have a glass.
After each new episode, I wonder how you'll top it and you guys keep hitting it out of the park. What a beautiful vertical to try. I do not have the '90 nor the '89 but I have one bottle of '61 that I may never open because I'm too chicken.
Do it! 🎉
Go for it!
Thank you for such a nice comment. You'll know when the time is right. Sometimes it's also nice to hold onto things. I may never open my '94 Harlan because of the memories of that wine when it was young.
Wow! How about a random guest who follows the channel?😊
Defiantly a wine I won’t be able to drink. Heck all of your wines are too expensive. You guys are lucky.
Time for SOLDERA
Thank you for a great suggestion. Never had it. Any particular vintage(s)?
I think Soldera will blow you away. It is not cheap but can rival any top Burgundy so has a good price quality ratio. The 2016 vintage is great but needs more age. Trust me this wine will become a firm favourite. It’s very unique for an Italian red
Probably the oldest wine I’ve had recently was a Saint Julian Langoa Barton 2004, had that last year. The oldest bottles in my small collection are a 1953 and 1968 Armagnac, though they stopped ageing once in the bottle.
Great video. Amazing that a 34 year old wine with 90 minutes of decanting is still at its peak! Probably another 10-20 years left to go. I am curious and you do not have to answer if you feel uncomfortable, but may I ask how you have amassed such wealth to be able to enjoy such wines?
You have to invest in a Durand! A combination Ah-So shimmy tool and a corkscrew that prevents the cork from breaking down during extraction. Good job, though. I was sweating a bit
Wow I wish I was your neighbor lol😎✌🏻
The 1949 which I tasted in 2021 fooled a lot of people into thinking it was a younger wine . If you ever get the chance to taste it ,you are in for a real revelation .
That's crazy - would love to try wines like that.
Agree. I've had several old Piedmont wines (Barolo, Barbaresco) from that age range. They are incredible, some of the best wine ever for me
Liked the video, again, obviously ;-) !! Always magical tasting these wines. But I also think you are influenced by seeing the bottle ! Not a bad thing, but it plays a rol. You actually should have blind tasted. I would be curious to know what you in that case thought of the 2005 and 1990. I think the 2019 would be easily recognisable; definitely more on the fruit ! Thank you for taking us through such a beautiful tasting, again ! Please continue !
We got a lot of requests for blind tasting when we did the Margaux wines at three different price points, and plan to do some soon. It'll be fun!. However, these wines are so different we wouldn't have any doubts which is which - plus there's no inherent bias here (as there would be when you tastes wines at vastly different prices).
@@OurPourDecisions Hahaha, sure, understand that of course. But did you know for sure upfront that the 1990 and 2005 were so different ? I would be curious if it is really sure when you blind taste those. I have seen Masters of Wine do wrong on this ! But nonetheless, there are also big advantages tasting non-blind ;-) ! Very special tasting for sure !
BTW, do you an Instagram account ? Same name but does not look like wine account ?
makes me want to start buying bottles now to age and im not even a wine nerd
My steakhouse in Houston has the ‘89 Haut Brion, 3 of them in fact! Please come try one!
One can feel the love for wine on the main man here, and the warmth of the cute daughter. Love that! Just please, start going a bit more unscripted. The scriptedness is cringy at times, and I know you must know... Keep going but please be more YOU and less a SCRIPT, it's a beautifully blossoming channel!
5:34, also experiment and actual examination to test your alcohol palette to determine is the new wine have the aging potential, such as alcohol level, tannin, acidity, etc.
After opening up three bottles of expensive wines, who drinks them all? I am curious, please tell me what line of work you are in? One last question, who is Stacy? Does she sell you the wines in your cellar? Sorry for all the questions, I hope you don't take offense to them it's just that I want to get a good picture of what I am watching.
Do a video on wine glasses
Which brand of glass are you using? Those are beautiful.
For those wondering the 89 can fetch $2100+
Ah yes!! One other question.....do ya'll actually finish all of the bottles that you open on the channel? For example, the Haut Brion (3) that are opened at the time....will the 3 of you finish those 3 bottles? If not, do you have off camera staff around that assist in finishing the vino!!
Oh, yeah - all of the wine is consumed that same evening over a meal. There's not a drop left usually. :-)
Could you do an en primeur 2023 video where you talk about your wines to watch? I am sure a wine cellar of this caliber buys futures right? I could use a second opinion😅
Honestly don't discard the Sutter Home's ability to age. Acidity is its ally. I've had 25 year old Charles Shaw Chardonnay in blind tasting. Surprisingly good tertiary characteristics.
B was just teasing me. All in good fun. Would have loved to try 25-year old two buck chuck. What an experiment! - Pops
Do the 3 of you finish the 3 bottles! What do you do with the wine after the video?
I’m sure they must pour them in the sink
Lol. Only the spoiled DRC ended up in the sink.. @Spyk3rX - we enjoy the wines with a meal after the recording is over.
B is stupid lucky 😂
Yeah, probably - but having her want to do this with me makes me the luckiest one... - Pops
Science at its best 🙂
Thanks for another very interesting episode!
It is a privilege to follow your fantastic wine tastings online!
B can your dad invite me to the next tasting! 3 vintages of Haut Brion amazing
Keep the videos coming! New favorite channel. Do you guys have instagram?
I'm working on it! - B
Haven't seen any austrian wine in there? Did I miss it or yet to come???
10:48 oh you tease.... LOL
Man who is this guy and how did he afford this crazy cellar?
Please do it blind! :)
I think i am your lost son!
What does your dad do for a living?
Please blind taste and then discuss! Much more interesting. Might make you feel/taste new things as well and not only what is “expected”.
We'll taste blind soon.
Man I have one 90’s bottle that I’m itching to drink… this video isn’t helping the restraint.
Yeah it's hard - lol. You have plenty of time as long as it's stored properly.
Can you adopt me please?
I was thinking the same thing.
LOL Thanks for your support!
Good information but a bit hard to look at how scripted everything is tbh.
Thanks for your feedback - always good to keep it real! We'll get better with time (we hope). It's harder to be in front of a camera than you think. :-)
So the purpose of aging is to get the wine stinky🤣..👍
I love the video's but you both are trying to script to much, you should just go with the flow. the edit is cringeworthy. video production is very solid. but it comes off like your trying to be to polished, maybe just talk to each other like the camera isn't there. Just a thought. minor tweak and this channel will go crazy great information.
How come you don’t have 1989? The wine nerd on the right was like “don’t embarrass your dad” 😂
LOL
What this channel has taught me is that with enough money, we can all be boomers with a stale sense of humor.
Ruuuuuude and unnecessary
I cant think of “la mission haut brion” without hearing its name sung to the melody of the second fugue subject of the confiteor in Bach’s B Minor Mass
