BEST conversation! Grit, loved hearing about, and how it show up in life. "Looking outside yourself, Not berating yourself!!! Forgive yourself" !!! "Sampling" vs Specializing early in life - flickers of interest = Seeds of passion - Amazing!!!
Support as a throughline is under represented, and a gift when it comes. Telling someone "it sucks, you feel like you're going to die, but you're only 1/3 your limit" is worlds different than "it sucks, we feel like we're going to die, but the finish line is at 2x more and we're all going to make it".
Grit is but one part of success-an essential part, but not a sufficient one. Fortuitous timing and circumstances are often overlooked or are dismissed as secondary to what can be achieved simply through hard work alone. It’s important to have an internal sense of efficacy and use that as motivation to grind. But just having an internal locus of control won’t overcome everything. The key is to be able to accept limitations and creatively pivot without capitulating on the quintessential parts of one’s goals.
I was at UC Prof, Michael O’Hare’s house and he was making brownies for his wife and myself who were doing a project, and I asked him what he thought makes for a successful student or anyone for that matter. He said,”that’s easy…luck, delayed gratification and read off line.” I think back on those brownies often. I love living in Berkeley.
Grit is sacrifice, determination in the face of adversity and focus. Practice that with a smile and a keen sense of emotional intelligence. You don’t need a book.
I remember when I first read about grit in grad school. It seemed a lot like conscientiousness of the Big 5 to me. I did not even have to research it to see how closely it sounded like conscientiousness. Sure enough, it’s basically the same thing. Grit is just another aspect or sub trait of conscientiousness. Crazy how you can get famous from by just renaming an already existing personality construct.
grit = try not to solve your kid's problems for them, easier said than done, no grit = hovering over your kids and taking over at the first sign of trouble
I'm responding to the comments about people learning about a number of things. I recommend Barbara Sher's books. In them, I learned that: (1) I’m mostly a Scanner: My interests are usually a mile wide and an inch deep. What do I mean by that; I have many interests, but I don't go into depth on all of them. (2) However, in a few areas, I'm a Diver: my interests in a few subjects are a mile deep and an inch wide.
Lol, gritty people are in danger of burnout. It's right there, can't you people see. Any person is only more or less "gritty" than another because they have been "burned out" in some way. This whole theory is useless and again just a rebranding of conscientiousness.
@@JohnDargan-t5z Oh, yeah? Are you a high power CEO or do you also lack grit. This shit is stupid and the whole idea is just an exercise in self selection. If you aren't intelligent enough to sus that out, well I sure do hope you have a lot of grit.

Success is based on making your situation your ally.
Thanks.

I read her book and what I found very interesting were all the footnotes she added. Thank you, Angela!

Grit is a measurement of the size of an abrasive material. Whatever this is is stupid pop psychology grifting.
You have to get Jonny Kim on the Navy SEAL, Doctor, and now Astronaut
She's beautiful and smart. I'd listen to her for hours.
You should check out her podcast with Mike Maughan “No Stupid Questions” if you haven’t already. It’s always interesting!

It sounds like a giant bunch of bullshit to me.
I bet you're a hoot @ parties. Are you unsuccessful too or enjoy wiping off the white board of those that are?

Mike Birbiglia is "texting buddies" with Scott?! Aa-ha, now I know who has been ghost-writing all Scott's dad jokes.
This is silly because then the jokes would at least be cleaver.
Tnx

Ah, I always love listening to two wealthy people tell me why I'm not successful due to my character flaws while knowing nothing.
I don't think they were talking directly to you but if that's what you took away from this conversation I think I see the problem. It's in the mirror.
