    I would describe his appearance as "Surprising", given that he's been dead so long, and there's an awful lot of steep stairs to get up here and make said appearance.

    And yet just a couple of years later, they found his body and proved he did had a spinal deformation

      scoliosis is far from being a hunchback, I've met quite a few people with scoliosis and it's not that noticeable actually

    • @Spearced
      @Spearced 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Yeah, I mean Sarah Michelle Gellar has scoliosis, but you wouldn't know it from watching her do roundhouse kicks in Buffy.

      @EebstertheGreat 6 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      Shakespeare's depiction (based on earlier, similar ones) is obviously grossly exaggerated, but it's interesting that there is a nugget of truth to the story. The round curve was apparently quite substantial and started very early in life, which might have been noticeable to some people, and certainly would have been known to anyone close. Not a "hunchback," just a curve, but still enough to ruin his posture when sitting for a long time, which I guess kings have to do rather frequently.

    • @sesfilmsllc
      @sesfilmsllc 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It was more of a mild form of scoliosis, than a hunchback.

    • @Marialla.
      @Marialla. 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@sesfilmsllc I saw the archaeology documentary about finding his grave, and his skeleton didn't look "mildly" deformed, it had a pronounced S-curve. I wouldn't be surprised if his back did look hunched.

    Richard III's most recognizable feature was the distinct lack of a horse.

    Richard III was a hunchback. NHS consultant Dr. Piers Mitchell confirmed this in "The King In The Car Park" regarding the scoliosis. He stated that "hunchback" was a term for anyone with a spinal abnormality.

    • @K1lostream
      @K1lostream 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      And there was me thinking hunchback was a term for people with hunched backs.

      Yeah but the withered arm was fiction, so we don't really know what to trust with the fictional portrayals of the actual person.

    • @charlespeterwatson9051
      @charlespeterwatson9051 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@t.c.thompson2359 Dr. Jo Appleby made that observation to Phillipa Langley after uncovering the skeleton and finding the scoliosis to confirm the hunch but found no withered arm, a fact that relieved Langley sometime after Appleby first told her the skeleton was that of a hunchback.

    I have scoliosis. My mom has severe scoliosis. Her back at the top curves to the right which causes quite a large lump. Not too noticeable with clothes but without it it is, she jokingly calls herself a hunchback, so it’s not far off why that could have been a genuine mistake thinking he had a hunch back if someone close to him spilled the beans about his scoliosis lump

  • @zbr76

    For everyone saying 'this didn't age well', I don't think Turi King's team had found the skeleton at the time of recording. So no-one knew for sure whether his spine was crooked.

      Richard the III's scoliosis was mild enough that it could easily be concealed and it did not cause a hunchback. He just had a slightly short torso and one of his shoulders was a little higher than the other.

    • @edsimnett
      @edsimnett 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      That's not mild scoliosis. "Richard's spine has a curvature of 70 to 80 degrees. Anything over 50 degrees is a candidate for surgery, Mitchell said; the NIH puts this figure at 45 degrees." ( www.cnn.com/2014/05/29/health/richard-iii-spine-scoliosis/index.html )
