Part of why SAG-ACTRA joined the writer's strike is that the studios were going to pay extras One Days Wage to be fully 3d body and face scanned to be used as the studio wants in perpetuity.
So, one days pay to never work again. And the studios think that's OK....
I'm sure less people would have a problem with it if they, say, licensed the use of their likeness and continued being paid for it, but the higher ups got too greedy.
Came here to say this exact thing. There needs to be a line drawn so that ai can't be used to replace actual people as it will destroy the entire industry.
The studios came out to say they wouldn’t use it in perpetuity, but just for that specific film. As if that was much better or they were worth believing.
They do this in "The congress" with Robin Wright!
They may say it’s only 1 film but you know that contract has sone shifty wording and a lot of jargon to cover there true motives
Robert Zemekis has stated he would never allow a back to the future reboot as long as he is alive...
May he live a long long life 😂👌
I see Eric Stoltz's interpretation of "Back to the Future" now, and I can't unsee it. That's brilliant.
I remember hearing the reason they had Marty’s dad upside down in that scene was to make it harder for ppl to recognize it’s not the same actor but it’s so much funnier the writers just wrote scenes to fuck with crispin glover bc he was that much of a dick
3:08 Option 3: Christopher Lloyd is a comedic genuis. He knows who Eric Stolz is. He just decided to stay in the bit. I bet that Eric, when someone referred to him on the set as Eric rather than Marty, would say "Who's Eric" to remind them. That was Chris saying f-you to Eric Stoltz in the best way possible.
A horror movie like back to the future would be pretty interesting. Trying to get his parents together so that he basically doesn't die, and then going back to his modern time, finding a completely different family. I never thought about how that would actually feel. The people you have memories of no longer exist and you don't know your family anymore. Geez
and then getting rid of your copy from this new universe
@@NoNameAtAll2That didn't even cross my mind 😬
15secs in..... is this the whole "turn the replacement upside-down"
What a coincidence. Just this weekend, my family aired the Back to the Future trilogy for our housing community. It's also one of our favorite movies as a family; we have a poster of it in our theater room.
The concept of time travel and tampering with events and outcomes was explored very heavily and thoroughly in the Zero Escape series, but it came to its ultimate conclusion in Zero Time Dilemma, which... you should not play if you are prone to existential crises. There's also a surreal scene where they talk about the time travel shenanigans in the context of Back to the Future, without ever mentioning the movie or characters by name. As someone who intimately knows Back to the Future, it felt like Alzheimer's given physical form.
Housing community??
Bro just called me broke in the most respectful way 😅
whats a theater room?
I love how the writers avoided mentioning the movie directly in ZTD, calling the protagonist "M" and having him travelling in time with a "cool car".
But also, they give an insightful theory on what happened with the rich version of Marty, saying that he may have been "killed" or having his body taken by the 'original' timeline Marty, *or* he doing the same time-travelling shenanigans to get to the 'original' Marty's timeline for whatever reason, basically arguing that they switched places by tampering with each of their timelines.
Funny how 100 years turned to like 15
I thought the reason for the court case wasn’t about the prosthetic mask, but because they used unused footage from the first movie of him into the sequel without his permission or knowledge. The specific take was of George dancing alone waiting for Marty to arrive.
No it was the prosthetics that pissed him off most. He talks about it in several interviews.
I feel like recasting for the sake of the dead would be much more creative than the cgi masks.
It's an exercise for both casting directors and new actors; having to replace a known quantity.
Yeah, but that's hard though...
Agreed. The Luke actor is just depressing because they look the same, with a bit of makeup they could have made him even more Luke-like.
This has got to be one of the most literally terrifying videos you guys have ever done.
Great work!
I randomly learned most of this about 2 weeks ago...and just last week I learned that the studio collective's "deal" was they want to be able to hire extras for a single day and do the full face scan and then the studio would own their likeness in perpetuity....
Im pretty sure I remember Micheal J Fox just saying once "They'll reboot BTTF one day, they will, and there's nothing I can do about it"
So the message I got from this video is that we are currently in the midst of a cyberpunk dystopia where any/everyone's likeness and talent can be stolen and replicated for profit.
I hope brad gets a video where he gets to talk about back to the future
Robin Williams only restricted use of his image for 25 years after his death. So just 16 years left for Mrs. Doubtfire 2.
I am reminded of a line from the game ARCANUM Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura:
"When a human was given a look at our Advanced Dwarven Technology, his 1st thoughts were "What can I use this for?", when it should have been "What is the cost of its use?". Technology exploded in their hands because they are NOT burdened with our longevity...humans rarely live long enough to see the consequences of their mistakes."
I'm gonna use that absolute horror show clip at the end for a song. So dystopian.
~22min in Brad mentioned a horror movie that was produced because the rights were taken from them was most likely referring to Willy's wonderland being made after the FNAF rights were taken off of Warner Bros by Scott Cawthon
I distinctly remember seeing an interview with James Earl Jones, after obi wan released. He talked about how his voice had changed, and how they had to modify it, but he did read the lines at least.....
One of the saddest cases of using dead actors' likenesses without consent is in the Flash when they had CGI George Reeves as Superman.
Y'know, the actor who became depressed for only being forever known as Superman
A very interesting film in this vain is “The Congress” with Robin Wright as Robin Wright. “An ageing actress agrees to preserve her digital likeness for a studio to use in any future films it likes.” And it’s a trip.
On one of the commentary tracks, I think it's with Bob Gail, He said they had him upsided down to help hide the fact that it was a different actor playing George.
He also mentioned that Lea Thompson was kinda a bitch to him on set, she didn’t speak to him outside of their lines they shared together and apparently when her parents visited the set she only introduced him as “the guy playing Crispin”
I've never seen Black Mirror, but that Miley Sirus plot was done by Futurama in 2001 as a critique of Nappster, using Lucy Liu.
I love how it ends with "but Darth Vader can never die" on a loop instead of the usual ending theme
At 13:30, I get what you were trying to do, but Mark Hamill did give his permission for that and was involved in the process of making the episode. He was on set and shot scenes for it that were then done by a body double and the cgi was done over the body double. It's all there in the making of documentary for The Mandalorian.
I am not a fan of that, I think they should have recast entirely, but it's definitely not the same situation as you seem to suggest it is.
Edit: you do mention the body double and cgi later, but you don't mention that Mark Hamill was still involved himself there.
Poor Brad, trying desperately to get Back to the Future 😂
Also: that last bit 😳
I’ll always agree with Eric Stoltz’s opinion on the film. MARTY’S family is fucking gone, replaced, different. It’s treated as if he “fixed his family” or “got them out of their rut” but that means his entire family dynamic is complete lost.
Lost “because of him” because he had to put the pieces together and better than before his entire life is altered forever. How on earth that isn’t horror I don’t know, but it’s in the movie and it’s perfect.
How people hate on Eric for THAT makes no sense. It’s absolutely psychological horror.
Not to mention time travel itself is horrifying, and the erasure of time in Back to The Future IS HORRIFYING.
I love MJF but fucking hell Stoltz would be absolutely phenomenal.
He was a prick though.
The movie "The Congress" covers this dystopia, where actors sell the right to their bodies. It starts with movies they star in new, then they use them to remake old movies, and finally anyone can buy and wear your skin.
Karl: "Hollywood is now a cabal of AI necromancers."
Brad: "ZZ Top did a cameo in part three ;-;"
Another horrifying thing that goes unspoken about BTTF is in the third movie when Marty and Doc hijack and destroys an entire train, effectively changing hundreds of people's futures that started from their ancestors taking that train across the country.
I read a article about that Paul Eiding, Jennifer hale, david hayter said no to put there voices to AI voices.
Those last few seconds were haunting.
back to the future reboot starring kevin hart as marty mcfly and the rock as doc brown
26:45 the pain in Brad's voice is so palpable.
I’m kinda surprised Stoltz didn’t simply quit. He had a point, and could have explained that he wasn’t going to be able to do that role, and left sans paycheck.
so i actually liked the direction this video took more than back to the future stuff. its only depressing if we let stuff like this happen, so talking about it is a good idea to me.
i always thought back to the future had some creepyness to it as a kid, the idea the people were just disappearing from existence was scary to me as a child
If you want to talk about crazy actors, you should discuss Klaus Kinski.
I know I'm a terrible person for this... But I'm experiencing peak Schadenfreude from Brad's suffering in this video.
Also great topic.
Counter argument, if Eric Stoltz insisted on being in character at all times then he shouldn’t have had a problem playing it as a comedy be cause “Marty” doesn’t know the ending, only Eric does. That’s not very method, that’s just being a twat.
Literally was talking with my friends about these contracts about your likeness being used in perpetuity and then you drop this.
We'll living in a dystopia, without all the cool tech.
25:40 that funny to me how in Lego space when we got mcu Spider-Man we use Marty head for it.
About "new ideas need to happen"...
Isaac Asimov wrote novella "Profession" in 1957 about exactly same topic. more that 60 years ago some authors were trying to warn us about our overuse of technology.
this before IBM PC and eyePhone. and now we heading towards this scary version of the future..
A half hour video on Back to the Future? Yes, please.
I legit thought glover was in the second movie and the reason he was blurry was because they were trying to hide the bad prosthetics... their trick worked on me at least.😅
This started with some fun movie facts and lead to a very dark place that fully justifies the writers and actors strikes that are ongoing.
Man, but capitalism needs to go.
"What was your favorite episode of Fact Fiend Timmy?"
"I really like the one where Brad wanted to talk about Back to the Future and Karl talked about depressing reality for a long time!"
Poor Brad but I loved this one! 😂
What's in the coffee mug that's making you wobbly? Huh??
So interesting the timing of this video with the SAG protests going on right now.
Brad is a gem in this video!
24:12 25:12 26:40 27:22
Love yall videos back to the future is so iconic
That ending is so spot on!
One of the weirdest versions of this I ever saw was the Johnny Walker walker whiskey ad. It felt so wrong. I don't know if his family signed off, but it was creepy
Gotta say this is the most depressing bits in a while.
Funny enough they are striking about the face swapping issue rn
Remember that time VW reanimated Gene Kelly for an advertisement?
Pepperidge Farm remembers.
Reminds me of the Lucy Lu episode of futurama with kidnapster
You missed a massive one... The ad for VW that had Gene Kellys face over a dancer. That was around 2005...
This video couldn't have come out at a better time, because SAG-AFTRA (USA actors' union) has just announced that they're joining the writers' union on strike, and it's my understanding that it's at least partially a result of the recent proposal by the major film studios (Disney, Warner Bros, etc) which if the union had agreed to, would give studios the freedom to have any actor come on set for a single day for one day's pay and have their face scanned and digitally copied for the studios use however they pleased forever with no more pay for the actors. Effectively making acting as a profession entirely obsolete for all but the biggest household names. This video was almost certainly filmed before news of that proposal got out, but that just makes what Crispin Glover said in his court case all the more true.
2:50
Or, option #3, since Eric Stoltz spent such a short stint on Back To The Future that Christopher Lloyd just doesn't remember him.
We have reached the point in which we don't need a Faraway Brad, we can just replace him with AI FOREVER!
one of the many many reasons i loved altered carbon as a series. short but punches heavy in the more hard scifi end of things.
10 seconds in: Oh boy, can't wait for Karl and co to talk about the John Mulaney bit on Back To The Future.
30 minutes later:.... OH MY JESUS CHRISTICLE ON A HONEY-GLAZED BICYCLE! Like... right wingers out here shitting on the Wachaoskis for being trans when they couldve just pointed to them practically almost conning Jet Li instead! Now THAT'S a valid concern
And the fact they're clearly fans of old school anime and kung fu flicks makes it hurt more they would've done that to him if they could. Though maybe that level of respect is why they were at least honest from the start
Maybe you were thinking Matthew Broderick? I always get him and Michael J Fox mixed up.
8:20 Camera intensifies for 2 seconds.
That is how you end a great video y'all 😂🎉 Fan-frickin'tastic outro
"Compared himself to Brando, yet missed half his lines." Know who else missed half his lines?
Karls fit is dope. Also great video.
There’s a documentary about a Danish reality star where it’s like he is narrating his story. He died during or not long after Covid. So at the start of every episode there’s this text about how his voice was made artificially and that his family believes he would have wanted it like that. It’s Sidney Lee
I can see why Karl wanted to leave now & it makes me sad :(
I like all the tangents.. I respect that Brad is tryna stay on topic.. but I’m also like, “shit, let’s see where we go today”
this is the darkest timeline
If there exists any sizable amount of Crispen footage as McFly, I'd like to see a cut of it just to see the tone difference.
I want his face off- Nicolas Cage
Acctually Fox was their first choice, but the Family Ties people did not want to let him do it. Stolz was fired because they were able to make a deal with Family Ties production that he can do it if it does not interfear with the show.
It's kinda ironic that the hypothetical technology he had to argue his case came into existence about the time when the future from the movie was set.
The extremely ridiculous movie Transylvania Twist used footage from the move The Terror to put in a scene with Boris Karloff. I wonder now who got paid for that.
Genius ending edit, lol
Why does docs voice sound so insanely different?
that ending tho...
I remember Crispen from that movie about a rat.. definetly an odd movie
this kinda reminds me of a couple things you can see in the videogame Detroit Become Human, i remember seeing a poster about androids creating music
If I was an actor and was in some big movie, then I would probably allow them to use my face, but just for background appearance. If the character need to do something, then that’s me, I’m playing that character. But if it would make sense for them to be somewhere, like part of a council or a crowd, just add them in post. If it was about ai I would also just agree to that one specific movie.
DARTH VADER CAN NEVER DIE - because he continues to earn profit for the company that owns him
What are companies going to do when they replaced everyone with A.I., because if no one has a job then they won't have money to spend on anything these companies are selling.
What we should do is find a way to hack the AI algorithms they're using, and feed them nothing but the entire human collection of Fan-fiction, see how well that plays out 💀
Also the scene where marty punches biff thats actually erics hand they didnt bother re shooting that part definitely thought they would've put that in here
lol when the point is literally lost in lost.
This stuff especially.pre pressing given now that they're trying to combat writers strikes with chatgpt
The fact his alterations to the timeline were having an effect on him in 1955 shows he would eventually alter to have the memories of his different family in 1985. Still not a tragedy. Eric and Internet personalities misinterpreting the material
Karl, I absolutely love your guys' channel, but unfortunately I do have a complaint. Is there any way you could make your volume stay at one level instead of going up and down so much? I feel like a dick for even asking, but I'll turn it up because I can't quite hear you all, then all of a sudden you're blowing my earballs out. Other than that, please keep on keeping on, and good luck to y'all. Thank you from Michael in Tennessee.
Yeah, I'm gonna need you to sight your sources on this one pal. Lol.
I'm really surprised you guys didn't bring up the time Crispin Glover went on Letterman high as balls and nearly kicked David Letterman in the face
26:57 insert Spider-Man PS4 miles morales review
Is that Jay Bauman back there?
The tiny tiny man skeleton?
Another reason they re cast marty is because they wanted fox to begin with he just couldnt do it due to scheduling issues
Well, thanks for my Monday dose of existential dread. lol
It seems to me the simple enough answer is a likeness licensing fee and a law that requires approval from the person or their estate for X years after their death for each usage of their likeness with a few exceptions. For example they would still have to pay for using the likeness but not seek approval if it was a public figure and the likeness was being used in line with what that person did in public so for example you could use the face and body appearance for scenes of Michael Jordon playing basketball in a movie set during his career but you couldn't decide to just use his likeness without approval for a character in a sci-fi movie or a movie about his life in private except where it was recorded publicly such as publicly published interviews or autobiographies.
