  • A short stretch of road along Route 66 / Hwy 333 near Tijeras plays the end of "America the Beautiful."
The location is along Route 66 heading east from Albuquerque to Tijeras. They have removed the signage that used to advertise the location, and how to hear it. So here are some directions:
Starting from Albuquerque at the intersection of Tramway & Central:
    1) Get on Route 66, not the interstate, heading east.
    2) You will start out driving east with the interstate to your left.
    3) After about 1.7 miles you'll cross under the interstate and it will be on your right for a while.
    4) After another 2.4 miles you'll cross under the interstate again and it will be back on your left.
    5) This is where you start looking for the Musical Highway. It begins approx. 0.35 miles from this last underpass. The interstate will be on your left, and you'll see signs on the interstate for the upcoming exit (you can see the blue interstate sign in the video at 0:02).
    6) Where the guardrail begins on your right along route 66, look for a slightly darker colored strip of asphalt. It is immediately INSIDE the far right white line, not on the shoulder. See video 0:02. The darker strip is much lighter now, but you can still see it.
    7) Drive at 45 mph to hear it at its intended speed.
    8) At 45 mph it takes about 16 seconds to experience the song. Then there is a 2 second break (see 0:20), then the smaller patch that used to play the Nationwide jingle.
    9) The jingle section has been "removed" but you can still kind of see it and kind of hear it.

I meant thankfully the Nationwide jingle no longer plays. It was pretty annoying. But the musical highway is pretty awesome. If you're in the area, check it out!

Yeah, sorry! I (unfortunately) have the bad habit of skimming through what I read sometimes! That (the nationwide jingle) WOULD be real annoying! lol...I have never heard of music on the highway, but it is so cool!

Thanks for sharing this. I only live 3 hrs away, and get up that way a lot. But I never knew we had a musical highway! I'll be sharing this with the wifey on the next road trip for sure.

Your description says to drive 45 MPH to hear it but the speed limit sign at @0:03 says the speed limit is 55. Is that the speed you’re supposed yo go or are you supposed to go 10 under?

1/5/21: still there, we went just yesterday. Use the visuals in this video to help you find it (blue sign on left and hills). There are no markings on the road and no Musical Highway sign. It is all along that one guard rail. There were others out there who also drove it and heard it. Good luck!

Yep! I drive this road many times per week and it's still there in the road. If you know where to look, you can kind of see the change in color along the asphalt on the edge near the shoulder. The Nationwide jingle part has been "removed" but you can still kind of hear notes of it if you drive over it. It's just another short piece of slightly darker road right after the real part. I'm not sure when they took down the "drive here" signs! I guess sometime in the past 4-5 years. :D I didn't even notice.

I drove this tonight and it was SUPER hard to find. For one, I didn’t see those markings. There’s NO posted signage marking where it starts. I had to look at several different websites before I found out I wasn’t hitting it because it’s actually ON THE SHOULDER.
I may go back tomorrow morning to see if it’s easier to find in daylight. But I have an early afternoon flight home.

You probably want a car with a stiff suspension for best results, so that the vibrations conduct into the car instead of being limited to the suspension strut and the air around the car.

Have enjoyed this strip but now it is GONE. Sadly, the musical notes in the pavement are filled in and the highway sign is missing. Don't know why. Bummer.

We went yesterday. It is still there but there are no marking on the ground and there is no signage anywhere. We used this video to pinpoint where it started based on the signs and the mountains. It begins where the guard rail starts and ends where the guard rail ends.

    • @beththomas1930
      @beththomas1930  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It's still there! I drive this road most days. They have taken down all signage and markings so you just have to know where to look. I'll try to get the mile markers and visual landmarks to add to my original post so folks can still find it.

there are carefully spaced bumps on the road surface. when the car drives over them, the bumps vibrate the suspension and your car turns into a large metal violin, essentially.
different spacings of the bumps give different notes, and if you space everything just right in the correct ratios, you get a song
