It's absolutely ridiculous the logic (if you can call it that) the government at that time had regarding harm reduction and sex education. According to them, giving clean needles to addicts is promoting drug use. Which is totally absurd. Addicts are going to find a way to use whether the needle is clean or not. When you're dopesick, getting your next hit is all that matters. That's the power of addiction. So why wouldn't they want addicts to remain free of HIV/AIDS by using clean needles and not spread the virus to more people?! Also, pamphlets given out to teens that explained how to protect yourself during sex were deemed too "explicit". So their approach was demanding classrooms across America utilize an abstinence-based approach to teaching teens about sex. Everyone knows the more you tell teens not to do something, they're going to want to do it even more. So why on earth wouldn't they want teens to have ALL the information possible given to them so they won't die an early death? The Regan and Bush administration has blood on their hands. What a shameful time in American history. Just tragic.
I wonder what the mental and physical toll of being a doctor and constantly seeing young, well people slip away slowly or quickly. If you're a person who really connects with people, that constant sadness or dread HAS to take a toll.
Unfortunately there is little hope she survived. If she was already in aids stage in 1989, it meant she had to survive 7 years until effective treatment were made available.
Sometimes I wonder if they found a cure long ago, would they really say if there was? I mean they would lose billions of dollars considering how expensive the medication costs to keep you alive from this horrific disease, doubt they would risk losing that cash flow, really sad...
Not true AZT was effective for some and kept them alive until other drugs became available. Sadly the reason some of the drugs didn't work was because of the stage of the disease.
It’s quite upsetting the amount of people who will have been infected because of more conservative factions with a lot of power were against needle exchange. These days it is so incredibly easy to get access to clean, safe needles. We have the data that tells us this works. And we have sharps disposals in places like public restrooms to prevent needle stick injuries. If this had happened earlier, imagine how many lives would have been saved? It is why I find it hard to not have some contempt towards conservative ideology. ‘Don’t do drugs’ or ‘don’t have sex’ does not work. And people don’t deserve to die just because they do drugs or have sex.
Dr. Macedon (they never showed how he spelled his name) was a really good, caring, empathetic doctor but I disagree with his approach to AIDS testing. He should have been pushing a lot of his patients towards getting tested and knowing their status instead of saying basically no hurry, it is up to you, we can talk more next week, etc. The one guy had been very promiscuous and was apparently now with one partner but he was worried about his past. His partner deserves to know his status. The other guy had a lot of infections and then came down with shingles and the doctor was saying thst people can get all that stuff and not have AIDS but that patient was gay and probably had a lot of sexual partners. I don't mean to stereotype gay men but these shows on AIDS make it apparent that most gay men have a lot of sexual partners. A show from the UK talked about a guy who had sex with over 200 partners in a weekend at a bathhouse. That is just disgusting.
He definitely has the virus, but you I u have to remember it was so new and they really couldn't do much unfortunately. Patient o had sex with 50 men on new year eve , one night he Said it was over 3,000 Men. That is a lot , but they didn't deserve to die like that 😔 ❤️
I disagree with the gentleman’s opinion of methadone, it has kept me off the streets. I HAVE recently failed to taper off of it but that was MY fault not methadone’s. And due to the other part of my program that the clinic taught me I didn’t get high despite the failure 🎉! I went back up a little on my dose but I didn’t get high, didn’t get caught stealing, didn’t go to jail etc etc. I know it’s wildly different for everyone but my recovery program saved me and methadone is a huge part of my program. Keep your heads up! Sorry for the dissertation.
HELLO FRIEND I'M IN DUBLIN IRELAND AND I'VE BEEN ON methadone for the last 25 years and i believe it saved my life it deffo has its place for some people like me
I’m on suboxone and have been for about 6 years and I haven’t used anything in that time. I think suboxone is relatively new but an alternative to methadone and it does work and has worked well for me…@@aislingfitzroy8838
I just don't understand how this far into the epidemic people were still getting infected! By 1983 when I was a 17 year old gay man my doctor was telling me what not to do. It was all over the news.... why did this continue? Did people think it would not happen to them?? I am a versatile male, have been since I was 19 in 1984 in Oakland, CA, but certain things need covered when doing certain things! I would have never thought not "suiting up" and asking my partner too as well! Oh a happy note, there sure are very handsome bearded men in this video!
Never trust a junkie nor an ex junkie
RIP All those whom passed on from aids. RIP Peter Jennings
John Parker should get a medal. That what he did was illegal in twelve states was shameful.

Totally agree. He lives in Australia now and actually has an impressive educational background. Google him, his name is Jon Stuen- Parker.
Hope you all having a good day today?
I had a friend that passed last months of aids
I am so sorry to hear this, May your friend rest in peace.
I'm so sorry for your loss. I pray your friend rests in peace. God bless you and the family of friends of the person who passed away.
God Comfort those with this Disease ...
Where was ur god when this virus spread? Was it his "will" ? Spare us.

Does anyone know what happened to Cindy? 😢
My heart breaks for her, dealing with addiction is nightmare by itself but adding AIDS to the problem is devilish.
Probably passed away a long time ago with her "boyfriend" who was probably her pimp in reality. 🙄
Unfortunately there is little hope she survived.
If she was already in aids stage in 1989, it meant she had to survive 7 years until effective treatment were made available.
My heart breaks for her. I hope she did get some help. My thoughts are with her, if she did pass away, may she rest in peace.
You can skip the parts where the doctors/scientists talk about a possible cure. All of them failed. So frustrating.

Hi
I saw a sharps disposal area, it was the ground around children’s playground equipment. People high on drugs don’t care

Thankfully, doctors like Macedon don't do their work with moral judgement about sexual preferences. He is an angel on this Earth.
I think msm has intense lust some could be cannibals or cold blooded killaz I'm one who is Manic Depressive Type and a Binger

@@sgrfpprmnt Might want to try googling him. Turns out he was a massive sexual predator of his patients.
Amazing g stamina

Did Jay test HIV positive? What ever happened to him?
I wondered that too. Handsome man..... not that that matters.
I wondered how he supported himself if he quit his job and become an activist. I was I had half his courage,.
If he was still able to work, he wouldn't have got SSI at least for quite a while.
Even though they called him Jeff in this show, I think that guy was Peter Staley, he went on disability leave from his job.
Donations? Had savings? A wealthy family?
Hi
He was an investment banker which makes me think he probably had a lot of savings and investments amassed in his career to fall back on.
SLIP AT 15:20 in 12 states IN THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA? WHAT??? DO YOU MEAN 12 STATES IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA?
Well, He is right. Washington D.C is not part of a State and is NOT considered one.
How are you
12 states AND the District of Columbia.
And it is treated today on the governments dime for a mere 166.00 a day.
Empty new needles don't encourage drug use. And bleach and water bottles ARE PART OF YOUR RIG!!!
Horor!
