My friends and I coined a term after that NJ/Detroit series in honor of the red-headed Brian Scalabrine , appropriately called , " The Scalabrine Effect ". It goes like this. A little used bench player gets hot one game, or maybe even one half, and has a great game and is a big factor in their team getting the win. This is what happened to Brian Scalabrine and the Nets in Game 5. Because the starters had gotten into foul trouble Scalabrine played heavy minutes in the clutch and delivered, hitting all 4 of his three point attempts and finishing with 17 points in their crucial overtime win putting them up 3-2 in the series. But this is when the "Effect" takes over. It manifests as over confidence in the little used player who subsequently goes on to play as though he were a key player whose abilities are greater than they really are. He often shoots like he has a green light from his coach and as if he is still as hot as he was in that earlier game in the series. However, he now returns to his normal form, the 11th or 12th man he is. This happened to Scalabrine, though I must admit it was not as dramatic as some other examples we would witness in the coming years. And to our surprise it seemed to happen quite often. So in summary - a little used, non-scoring bench player has a great game or half. Because of overconfidence and his desire to replicate that success he goes on to force shots and tries to play a larger role than he normally does. This backfires as he returns to earth, hurting his team in the process. I salute you Brian, namesake of the now infamous Scalabrine Effect ! (Or infamous among my group or friends!)
only champion team to not have a star...a lot like the 79 sonics...but even that team was staked and had 2 great players in fred bown and dennis johnson not to mention spencer haywood...this pistons team was just so a smart solid team...i dont think anyone on this team but larry brown is a hall of famer....billups had 7 good to great years....rasheed had 8...prince was just okay...the bench was meh and ben wallace only had 6 great years...and was only a 4 time all star...so he cant be a hall of famer either imo...now hamilton may have a case but its a small one....i wouldnt put any of them in the hall of fame...now richard did have that uconn title run so he might get in cause of that but none of them were hall of fame nba players cause they were solid not amazing and they played together sacrificed and didnt put up stats and werent dominant and you need longevity if your not a stat monster...and they didnt have that...maybe if they won 2-3 titles....but to me non of them even had 9 great years so you cant be a hall of famer because of a 5-6 year run....we saw ben peak in 2004 and we saw the rest of the guys peak by 2006...i mean this team was just meh on offense...i dont know...to me if any of them get in its a joke of the hall of fame...unless its richard because of his college title run player of the year final 4 player of the final four and his stats/scoring numbers in the nba....the rest of them were solid ...not great..ben isnt a hall of famer im sorry...5-6 great years does not mean hall of famer...he wasnt the same without rasheed next to him...that trade changed his career history...
Asmosis Jones Have to disagree with you on Big Ben not being a HOFer....he's a 4 time defensive player of the year, tied with Mutumbo for the most ever and Dikembe got in. Two of those came before sheed was there and Ben has a ring. Dude was a game changer for over half a decade and to do that as an undrafted, undersized, listed 6'9 but really 6'7 Center makes him a first ballot HOFer imo...and I think it'll happen this year

this series wasn't even that close save for the Game 2 heroics from Kobe. Man Pistons were +400 to win the series - quite the upset.
