Actually the tunnel is bored below the seabed. It goes through a substrate called chalk marl. When it was bored many years ago half of the spoil was dumped near the Dover docks to form 89 acres of new English land, which was named Samphire Hoe. This is now a very beautiful nature reserve open to the public for walks and picnics. Just one correction regarding this video. At the start the TH-camr’s caption shows ‘Eurotunnel Dover Terminal’. That is incorrect. The Eurotunnel terminal in England is at Folkestone. Dover is a completely different town further down the coast.
There are a couple of reasons for the car-on-train approach. One is that with electric trains, making sure the air is breathable for such a long tunnel is much easier if there aren't car and truck engines running in it. The second is that any car accidents in a tunnel like this could have very serious consequences, as has happened in long alpine tunnels in the past. Keeping the cars in trains makes it much safer. Another point to consider is the size of the tunnels. The actual running tunnels are comparable in size to the old bore of the Blackwall tunnel, so if they were used as road tunnels, that would give a sense of how much capacity they could handle. Also, the car shuttle trains run at 140 km/h (about 85 mph), which is significantly faster than it would be safe to drive through (though obviously the loading and unloading takes up a lot of that time saving).
Even 3 decades later, its still a marvel of engineering and efficiency....I traveled this so many times for work between '96-'98...much better than flying when appropriate!
@@barse27 if my memory serves me, I’d say with including the minor wait times I incurred about 2+ hours from Calle to UK, maybe faster now and then another 45 minutes to London Center…we always drove from our Cologne office to Calle, about 4 hours and at night, no traffic at all…that was some time ago though 👍🏻

In 2006, I went to Milan. Taking Le Shuttle from Folkstone to Calais. Then riding onto Paris an hopping across to Milan (via plane) to see the International Bike show. Had an amazing time. When I set off on the shuttle, there was no sensation of moving, then I looked up an realised we were on our way. It was so smooth!

Used to use it every year to take the car for self-catering holidays. That route from the Folkestone car park to the French frontier looks a lot different (and longer) to what I remember. Thanks to Brexit, no doubt.
Thanks for this video! I've never watched anyone use the Channel Tunnel before. I was able to load Google Maps and follow along as you traversed the Disney-Like path to get on the train.
I'm surprised the handler didn't know the best way to direct a car close to the car in front of it. The best technique is to show the driver the distance between your outstretched palms, and then reduce that distance to reflect the cars getting closer together. Your palms and hands start wide apart, and slowly come together as the cars get closer. That way, the driver understands how much further he has left. It's much easier.
Even when we do that people don't really trust us on board ^^ we also have to do it for each vehicle, have to be fast enough to park everyone within the time provided by the control center to leave on time, then we also have to do all the security checks before leaving while answering to people's questions, sometimes it could be a lot to deal with, and we really want your train to leave on time! ^^ I'll try again this technique to see if it's a quicker way to help people parking...
@@TheClockwise770 the training is 6 weeks long for the certification, and two weeks of practice... On the french side the english speaking people might lack sometimes, but on the english side no one speaks french either ^^
The shuttle can accommodate 120 cars with passengers. It's not possible to drive or ride a motorcycle through the tunnel but the trip only takes 35 minutes while you kick back in your car. Some daring couples even have a quickie en route 😳
Hundreds of thousands of people drive their own cars under the Hudson River in multiple tunnels daily. None of this driving on to a train nonsense. Poor Euro drivers likely make driving your own car through the tunnel impossible.

Tell him it’s ok. I have driven on the ‘wrong side of the road’ for 15 years (France, Norway and Kuwait) and it becomes second nature. Instantly switched back when we came home to U.K….nothing to be afraid of.👍👍👍👍

My first trip on this channel. I crossed a few times in late 80's on ship and hovercraft. Far away, I wondered what this is like. Curious about the timeline ?, frequency ?, high fences for migrants ? adaptation to opposite side of road etc ? Now with brexit must be passport and customs etc. ? A light commentary would be welcome ?
It takes approx. 30-35 minutes for crossing (one-way) excluding waiting time at either terminal. You are normally required to check in at least 1 hour before your boarding time. In general 3-4 trains run every hour. Once you arrive at Calais, you will drive along a dual carriage one-way road until your lane soon merges with the "right" side of A16 French motorway. I think it helps drivers switch over from LH to RH side driving. Even before the Brexit, there have been passport controls of both UK and France as the UK wasn't a Schengen country anyway. After the Brexit, yes of course.
Very interesting video indeed! At 15:32 I think I would need the whole road to be littered with that sign on the left to constantly remind me to keep right because I would be so worried that I would suddenly find myself driving on the left as we do in the UK😅
Actually it's not that difficult. Follow other cars and pay attention on lines, arrows and letters on roads, e.g. whether they look correct or upside down.

Make a sign to fit onto your dashboard saying, “Drive on the right”, with a little diagram of a roundabout and the direction of traffic around it. I did this journey in 1993, and loved driving onto the train and in France itself.

I drove my brand new 1998 Lexus LS400 through the Chunnel, except that I really didn't drive through. I merely drove it unto a railroad car and got piggy backed into France. It like the trans Canada railroad where you can drive your car unto a railroad car and get transported across Canada.

As long as you carefully follow where and when others cars move, you'll be definitely okay. Please make sure you observe speed limits and your own speed at "kms per hour" instead of "miles per hour". Have a good travel!

I'm supposed to go through the eurotunnel on Friday but I'm extremely stressed due to claustrophobia, an irrational fear of lack of oxygen and anxiety over new situations. Does it feel just like a normal train? And does the time pass quickly on it?
It takes approx. 30 minutes. It's like London Underground trains running through a bit long tunnel. It's not completely dark. They installed many lights. Most of all, you can stay in your car during the journey, so please be relaxed and imagine you're in an indoor carpark somewhere in London.
How was your experience ? Perfectly fine I guess ? I've traveled with pretty claustrophobic friends and I've yet to see anyone feel bad. It has always been smooth and relaxed, arriving at the other end in no time.

Hi. Before getting on board the train you will have to go through 2 border controls: one for the UK (02:57) and the other for France (04:14). It is why you can simply drive off when you arrive. :)
Well... as many people have pointed out, it's Folkestone, not Dover. Sorry it's my fault, not yours. :) Crossing itself takes only approx. 0.5 hour, but you should add additional 1-1.5 hours for queuing & etc.

This is very interesting. I didn't know they had this service for autos on the train. It makes sense. Interesting you stay in your car for the duration of the trip. Can someone get out to use the toilet if they need to? How long is the trip through the tunnel?
Yes there are onboard toilets, but passengers were advised to stay in their cars in the early pandemic (when this video was recorded). The journey takes approx. 35 minutes one-way.

Interesting video, I had really no idea about the transport of vehicles through the tunnel. Well the landscape depicted in this video is not very attractive, but the idea of drive-on drive off trains is a good idea, and the trains can carry cars on the lower deck, and perhaps more cars, or passengers on the upper deck? There must be some extra roomy carriages for trucks, sorry, lorries...? Does England have huge off-road "lorries" in quarries and large opening cut mines, or are lorries called trucks when for example they exceed a hundred ton carrying capacity.? 🤔

Yes, as this was earlier in 2021. After September 28th they are no longer valid as "GB" was replaced by "UK".

My first trip on this channel. I crossed a few times in late 80's on ship and hovercraft. Far away, I wondered what this is like.
Curious about the timeline ?, frequency ?, high fences for migrants ? adaptation to opposite side of road etc ? Now with brexit must be passport and customs etc. ? A light commentary would be welcome ?
It takes approx. 30-35 minutes for crossing (one-way) excluding waiting time at either terminal. You are normally required to check in at least 1 hour before your boarding time. In general 3-4 trains run every hour. Once you arrive at Calais, you will drive along a dual carriage one-way road until your lane soon merges with the "right" side of A16 French motorway. I think it helps drivers switch over from LH to RH side driving. Even before the Brexit, there have been passport controls of both UK and France as the UK wasn't a Schengen country anyway. After the Brexit, yes of course.
Very interesting video indeed! At 15:32 I think I would need the whole road to be littered with that sign on the left to constantly remind me to keep right because I would be so worried that I would suddenly find myself driving on the left as we do in the UK😅
Actually it's not that difficult. Follow other cars and pay attention on lines, arrows and letters on roads, e.g. whether they look correct or upside down.
@@londonwalker3362 yeah, I guess it's best to try it once and will probably soon get used to it. Someone was telling me that it's harder for him when he returns back to the UK because he then forgets to stay left.
Make a sign to fit onto your dashboard saying, “Drive on the right”, with a little diagram of a roundabout and the direction of traffic around it. I did this journey in 1993, and loved driving onto the train and in France itself.

I drove my brand new 1998 Lexus LS400 through the Chunnel, except that I really didn't drive through. I merely drove it unto a railroad car and got piggy backed into France. It like the trans Canada railroad where you can drive your car unto a railroad car and get transported across Canada.

Very nice video you posted here London walker, i never watcb this travel between Dover city in England and Calais in France via this huge Euro tunnel by train. always thought you drive yourself by car in this tunnel. Very interested to see this for the 1st time and is this a very expensive trip to go thru this Euro tunnel? I know in England you drive on the left side of the road and in France you have to switch to the right side of the road. So you have to take care of that too. Watching this nice video from Paramaribo in Suriname, where we have left traffic too as in England.

As long as you carefully follow where and when others cars move, you'll be definitely okay. Please make sure you observe speed limits and your own speed at "kms per hour" instead of "miles per hour". Have a good travel!

I'm supposed to go through the eurotunnel on Friday but I'm extremely stressed due to claustrophobia, an irrational fear of lack of oxygen and anxiety over new situations. Does it feel just like a normal train? And does the time pass quickly on it?
It takes approx. 30 minutes. It's like London Underground trains running through a bit long tunnel. It's not completely dark. They installed many lights. Most of all, you can stay in your car during the journey, so please be relaxed and imagine you're in an indoor carpark somewhere in London.
How was your experience ? Perfectly fine I guess ?
I've traveled with pretty claustrophobic friends and I've yet to see anyone feel bad. It has always been smooth and relaxed, arriving at the other end in no time.

Hi. Before getting on board the train you will have to go through 2 border controls: one for the UK (02:57) and the other for France (04:14). It is why you can simply drive off when you arrive. :)

Well... as many people have pointed out, it's Folkestone, not Dover. Sorry it's my fault, not yours. :) Crossing itself takes only approx. 0.5 hour, but you should add additional 1-1.5 hours for queuing & etc.

This is very interesting. I didn't know they had this service for autos on the train. It makes sense. Interesting you stay in your car for the duration of the trip. Can someone get out to use the toilet if they need to? How long is the trip through the tunnel?
Yes there are onboard toilets, but passengers were advised to stay in their cars in the early pandemic (when this video was recorded). The journey takes approx. 35 minutes one-way.

Wow. Fundamental mistake there London Walker. At the start of this video your caption shows ‘Eurotunnel Dover Terminal’. That is incorrect. The Eurotunnel terminal in England is at Folkestone. Dover is a completely different town further down the coast. Informative video though 👍🏼
Yes, you're absolutely right. Sorry about confusion. I don't know why I'm still inclined to say "I drive down to Dover to cross the channel." regardless of whether that is ferry crossing or Eurotunnel. I guess I'm not the only one. :-)

Interesting video, I had really no idea about the transport of vehicles through the tunnel. Well the landscape depicted in this video is not very attractive, but the idea of drive-on drive off trains is a good idea, and the trains can carry cars on the lower deck, and perhaps more cars, or passengers on the upper deck? There must be some extra roomy carriages for trucks, sorry, lorries...? Does England have huge off-road "lorries" in quarries and large opening cut mines, or are lorries called trucks when for example they exceed a hundred ton carrying capacity.? 🤔
