  • Nancy’s Old Town is a trove of architectural wonders, each telling a story of the city’s illustrious past. The day began with a leisurely stroll along the Place Stanislas, the heart of Nancy’s historic center. This grand square, named after Stanisław Leszczyński, the Duke of Lorraine and former King of Poland, is renowned for its stunning 18th-century architecture and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The square’s symmetrical layout, adorned with ornate wrought-iron gates, gilded decorations, and classical facades, left Inday in awe. The surrounding buildings, including the Hôtel de Ville (Town Hall) and the Opéra National de Lorraine, displayed the opulence of the Rococo style, with intricate carvings and graceful arches.
From Place Stanislas, Inday wandered through the narrow, winding streets of the Old Town (Vieille Ville), where medieval charm and Renaissance flair coexisted harmoniously. The intricate details of the architecture, from the ornate doorways to the charming window shutters, captured the essence of Nancy’s historical richness.
One of the highlights of her visit was the Église des Cordeliers, a Gothic church that stood as a testament to the city’s religious heritage. Its stunning stained glass windows, with their vibrant hues, created a kaleidoscope of colors that illuminated the church’s serene interior. The gothic arches and delicate stonework offered a peaceful respite from the lively streets outside.
Inday’s exploration continued to the Palais des Ducs de Lorraine (Palace of the Dukes of Lorraine), a majestic building that once served as the residence of the Dukes of Lorraine. The palace, with its grand façade and expansive courtyards, was a reminder of the city’s regal past. The museum housed within offered a fascinating glimpse into Lorraine’s history, with exhibits ranging from medieval artifacts to Renaissance masterpieces.
As the day progressed, Inday took a moment to relax at one of the charming cafes lining the streets of the Old Town. Sipping on a café au lait and enjoying a flaky croissant, she soaked in the vibrant atmosphere of the city. The blend of historical architecture with the lively café culture created a delightful juxtaposition, highlighting the city’s unique ability to blend past and present seamlessly.
In the late afternoon, Inday visited the Parc de la Pépinière, a beautifully landscaped park adjacent to Place Stanislas. The park’s manicured gardens, serene fountains, and tranquil pathways provided a perfect setting for reflection after a day of exploration. The park’s picturesque beauty, with its colorful flowerbeds and stately trees, was a fitting end to her visit.
As the day transitioned to evening, Inday eagerly anticipated the highlight of her visit-the light show that transformed Nancy’s Old Town into a spectacle of color and illumination. The city’s summer light show, known as the “Son et Lumière,” began just before midnight and continued late into the night, adding a magical dimension to the historical architecture.
As darkness fell, Nancy’s buildings and squares were bathed in a stunning array of lights. The Place Stanislas became the focal point of the show, where vibrant projections and dynamic lighting designs highlighted the intricate details of the Rococo facades. The illuminated gates, the grand façades of the Hôtel de Ville, and the Opéra National de Lorraine were enhanced with a kaleidoscope of colors and animated visuals that danced across the buildings, creating a mesmerizing experience.
