this is spot on! I actually started thinking of junk food as cigarettes. when I see junk food, I run the same narrative in my head. Just like when you see those anti-smoking ads of diseased lungs, I envision clogged arteries when I see junk food. I dont want atherosclerosis any more than I want emphysema. Maybe it’s time for anti-junk-food ads on tv.

As someone who **had** to start saying 'no' to food offers from friends or at work, etc., I quickly found how difficult it was to get other people to understand and respect it. Food is the #1 reward at work for anything, and it's usually something super unhealthy like pizza or cake. Or maybe someone brings donuts every Friday. There were times someone would pick a restaurant I couldn't eat at and everyone would be extremely uncomfortable when I sat at the table without a plate and just drank tea. But what else could I do? I didn't choose the place. Me saying 'no' made them feel guilty about eating in front of me, which in turn made saying 'no' extremely uncomfortable for everyone, but I had no choice if I didn't want to be sick for 3 weeks. Even just turning down free sandwiches in the break room can be met with resistance and confusion. I could never get my boss to remember I couldn't eat any of it. After awhile I resorted to smiling and saying "Ok, thanks!" and then just going back to what I was doing. That made him happy and it kept him off my back with constant pressure to join in. You can thank people for their offer without actually partaking. So, just know that saying 'no thank you' to food offers can cause people to grapple with their own internal struggles with food guilt and social conformity, but you don't have to give in just to make them feel better.

When I was working I needed to stay away from sugary treats. At first I'd say "No thank you", but I didn't want to reject peoples offerings especially if it was home-made, so then it evolved into saying "Thank you" and just taking a sliver. Then I decided what people really want is appreciation, so I would say, "wow that smells really good" and "That looks really wonderful", I might even take some on my plate, but somehow magically, none of it would make it to my mouth, and nobody seemed to notice.

The similarities between food marketing and cigarette marketing isn't eerie if you know that Philip Morris bought Kraft and General Mills in the 80's and banded together with a few other cigarette companies to rebrand as Altria. The cigarette industry is quite literally the food industry now.

I keep a "snack back pack" in my car, so I always have healthy snacks and relatively healthy shelf stable ready to eat entrees for picnics, etc. I also bring some bananas, and Ezekiel raisin bread with me when I leave the house. I often bring an ice chest to carry a smoothie, and of course, drinking water. I keep trail mix in the snack back pack, and a great snack I dscovered at an Indian market called Roasted Chana. As a type-1 diabetic, it has always been important for me to check the ingredients and nutrition label on every food product I buy. Most people buy food on an emotional or aesthetic basis. If it looks "good", how bad can it be?
However, reading the words and numbers that describe the foods they represent can act as a more powerful tool to understand what you plan to stuff in your face. While you know that donuts and cereal and candy have added sugars, that fact doesn't become REALLY UNDERSTOOD until you see the actual numbers that measure how much sugar that food product contains. You have been told that processed foods have added chemicals, but it's only when you scan the ingredient list and see all those hard-to-pronounce chemicals printed one after the other: the preservatives, the artificial and "natural" flavors and dyes... that's when the category of "PROCESSED FOOD" truly shows its ugly, WTF self!

It's all familiar. It's why I know it's best to go to the store with a list: get in, and get out as quickly as I can. Stay present, and as aware as possible. Funny how easy it is to go into that "magical thinking" moment of, "it won't matter, just this one more time." Who says, I think it's Dr. Klapper, "Your body is always watching." one moment can turn into many and one day, you just wonder how you got here. My mom died of colon cancer. It was a big wake up call for me. It still took a long time to get past the old messages in my head. Thanks for reminding me of some better magic moments that will help steer me straight.

I don't understand diets where you restrict any foods or track everything. I think they're for the people who are in their first 5 years of lifestyle change. I tried both of those strategies and they're not sustainable for me. Track stuff until your decent at estimating, and maybe weigh the calorically dense stuff or bulk meals.
A brownie after a salad and dinner will do no harm to me. May even help fill my glycogen stores for workouts beyond what a "perfect" diet will do. If you want to make brownies or cookies, buy the raw ingredients and make small batches if you must. A package of premade brownies is going to be a lot more tempting than a bag of flour, some baking powder, and cocoa sitting in the cupboard. You have to look up a recipe, read reviews and measure stuff. I have an ice cream maker because the effort I have to put in to make the food keeps me from binging it. I don't want to waste the time it took to make it in one sitting. The same effect happens with any food I make vs purchase prepared.
