We lost some Vols fans when we passed over Knecht and picked the guy whose team had KO’d Tennessee from the men’s tournament. But I suspect that they’ll be back when the Grizzlies make the playoffs 😎
I played golf on draft day in West Lafayette at my home course. Zach was in the foursome in front of me playing with his friends. Talked to him several times, the most unpretentious young man you’d ever want to meet. He’s been playing basketball for 7 years and makes huge improvements every year. He will be a big time player for Memphis as you will never see a kid work harder than him. Painter had him on a do not foul leash for obvious reasons. Remember the block on Knecht in the waning moments of the NCAA? Kid also offensive rebounds well out of his area, another hustle stat. How many 7’4” guys could play 40 minutes in college? Has a beautiful shooting stroke evidenced by his 70% foul shot %. He will become a very good outside shooter for a man his size. FYI he rang 37 up on Clingan who as UConn successfully decide not to double and let Zach have his points and shutdown the others. Again, against a guy considered an elite rim protector. Wait until Zach finds out how less physical the NBA is now. I just hope all the haters have the guts to say they were wrong. The kid has a huge motor, heart❤ and most importantly tirelessly works to improve.
I hear from people saying how Clingan was/is better and from my eyes Purdue would’ve won if there were any competent shooters on the court. I mean I hear all the he is slow and what not but the kid was literally unstoppable in college for 2 years. And for him to have only started playing 5 or 6 years ago is mind boggling. He can be so much better because of the coaches and year round focus on training. I just don’t see how so many teams decided not to take the chance on him

Jokic doesn't move quick and jump out of the gym, but he has amazing passing skills, great low post skills, and unorthodox shooting stroke. Picked in the 2nd round is the biggest steal ever having a 3 time MVP and triple double machine. Duncan and Olajuwon didn't play organised Basketball until their teens.

Zach Edey has played basketball for 7 years and ran away with the two national player of the year awards and every other individual trophy you can win in college basketball. This is vs. kids who have been playing competitive basketball their entire lives. We interviewed Zach for an athletes platform we have and he's so impressive - in every way. The Grizzlies will not be disappointed.
Regarding the worst draft pick in the history of the NBA, I was not high on Edey until I watched his walk into the areana and interviews. I have never seen a 7FT plus big man with such cold-blooded killer eyes. This guy is different. Like MJ, he uses every comment as motivation to push himself to be the best. He relishes the doubters comment.

7'1 or 7'2 guy, around 35 pounds lighter. Big country Reeves had excellent fundamentals, low post scoring, good midrange jumpshot, but unfortunately the injuries got the better of him. Some people are comparing Edey to Yao. Edey has much longer arms at nearly 8'0, bigger hands, where as Yao has a Wingspan close 7'5.

A two time consensus player of the year in college the "...worst pick ever...."? Every selection is a gamble and you have to go on what a player has done and what you think they can do so Edey wasn't a bad choice. Let's see how it plays out.
Clingan has no footwork. He missed easy layups time after time against college level opponents. His defense is the only positive about his game. He has not shown to be a shooter either so idk where that keeps coming from 😂. Zach Edey was player of the year twice for a reason.

Defensive versatility, passing (especially on the elbow), he's younger and does more NBA-specific things. Edey would've gone #1 overall 25 years ago. But it's not 1999 anymore - JM

We literally needed a big man who rebounds, sets screens and rolls to the rim, provides a post presence and literally be a big body. And not to forget we’re gonna have Ja back at 100%, We finally get to see Smart for real, Bane falls back to the robin role I think he’s more suited for, JJJ can focus on doing forward things again and not have to waste as much energy defensively , We finally get Clarke back who was coming into his own before the injury, GG showed out towards the end of the season, Vince is gonna so much better, LaRavia got game, kennard can get hot at anytime, Santi has gotten so much better with more playing time, Rose can be a viable backup. With some moves here or there to get another servicable Center, Don’t be surprised if the Grizzlies make a run
Exactly. These same "analysts" that spew this garbage say Clingan was a great pickup. There's this misconception that Clingan can guard better and run the floor because he's quicker (and smaller) than Edey. Edey absolutely destroyed him head to head, and tested better in every metric at the combine. Oh, and he regularly played FULL GAMES without sitting.....
His combine stats were quicker than clingans, his shooting in the combine was top 2 for centers. He dropped 37 on Clingans head. Edey is a great screener, hard worker, and game buster. Hard to gameplan for a 7’4 300 pound guy who hits his free throws at a 75% clip. Edey will be in contention for ROTY if the grizz use him right. Clingan aint got shit on him (except a natty unfortunately😢)
After listening to Dan Hurley talk about Cam Spencer, I'm dreaming of Cam inspiring Zack to live in gym like Gannis and McConnell (I think it was McConnell) lived in the gym in Milwaukee during their early years.

Hard to say that a guy that won player of the year twice in CBB is a bad pick. While it may be true he'll never average what he did in college he still is talented enough to hang in the league.

with Edey on the floor, the offensive board numbers will go up for the team. Every time he goes after a miss, 2 or 3 defensive playerS will instinctively go to box him out.

“Worst draft pick ever” is such hyperbole. And comparing the selection of Thabeet from ‘09 to our drafting Zach this year is dumb. For one, Edey was picked by someone who actually knew basketball, not by a narcissistic owner who thought he must be the smartest guy in the room. That rich guy had made a considerable amount of money, maybe even honestly and ethically, but not by spotting genuine on-court talent.
I’d also add that “we” chose Thabeet at #2 (after the consensus number one, Blake Griffin) in a draft that included Steph Curry, James Harden, Tyreke Evans, DeMarr DeRozan, and Jrue Holiday. This year’s class may or may not produce a bevy of All-Stars, but the general consensus was that it was mostly populated even in the first round with role players, some of whom wouldn’t have a long career. IMHO, we can look to Edey’s progress in a length of time more compressed than many of his classmates and confidently state that his foundation is irreproachable.
I think Edey will be fine as long a he doesn't start. He should be the first player off the bench due to spacing issues. Ja, Des, Marcus, Jaren and Edey as a starting lineup is a horrible outside shooting lineup

I don't like the Edey pick. They should have traded back if they wanted Edey. But, I think he both brings a ceiling and a floor to any line up when he plays. They can't be elite on defense when he plays because he has to stay close to the basket. But they can't be bad on half court offense because he'll always be able to score or kick it out at a decent level. And he will collect fouls at an impressive rate. Where he really doesn't fit is in transition where he just can't quickly get from end to end. He's certainly not among the worst picks in NBA history. The best thing about him is that he doesn't need to develop. He'll be at or near his full value for his whole rookie contract.
How can you trade down without reasonable trade partners. Lower lottery picks may have had more value than the one two above it because you get a similar player cheaper.
Zack may get played off the court but he may force the other team to go big to stop him from scoring. People compare him to big offensively weak bigs, but he has an excellent touch with both hands.
I like these guys, and I like locked on Grizzlies except for it takes these guys forever to get to the point. No offense There’s some things they need to cut short.

I usually enjoy your episodes, but this was in my opinion a poor attempt to justify the Edey pick. How many 7-4 / 300 pound players who are successful in the NBA do you know? You have a Porzingis, who is close to his height, but 40 pounds lighter. You have Wembanyama, who is 90 pounds lighter. Both are athletically way more skilled than Edey.
Yes, he dominated College, but that's an entirely different skillset, and his back to the basket game is not built for today's NBA. Same thing with his defensive mobility (and you can't just "hide" a player underneath the basket... again, that's not College).
Is it the worst pick ever? Surely not. But you take too much effort in discrediting Chrysten Peek saying this, she had good points and in parts I agree with her. That pick was obviously a wrong one, and you could see that easily. His body type doesn't fit this league. We will see that soon, I guess (and I really hope I'm wrong with this, for the sake of the Grizzlies. Just can't see how).
