Good video takes me back to when i was a redcoat at butlins minehead i used to wake up early in the morning¹ to the sound of steam engines being prepared for the working day thankyou
Thank you for a great video. Travelled this line many times as a child (I'm 65 today) when it was under British Rail. I had a grandparents in Taunton and an uncle in Minehead. Never appreciated then what a great time it was. Stayed a few times in Blue Anchor as well.
Everyone is certainly missing the railway not running this year because of the virus problems. Lets hope we can get back to normal perhaps at Christmas?
What a stroke of luck you were able to land that ride, not knowing about the stoppage this year. I can only imagine what the tracks look like now! When the railway starts up again,it will have to be remembered that the wild life may have forgotten about the trains, and animals could be on the track. Very glad you made this film, excellent footage, and running commentary.
Yes that was fortunate thanks to the kindness of the DMU driver who has volunteered on the railway for many years. If you care to look through my recent videos you will see I have covered all the WSR stations and the track conditions now. Efforts are being made at last to clear things up by a few volunteers, although I fear overgrowth will return before trains start running again which currently is not expected to be this year.
This three video series must be among the best that Mike has recorded. I agree that seeing the climb out of Watchet was interesting. Loved the cross at Blue Anchor. Great that passengers joined or alighted at most stations. From more recent videos, there may not be as many weeds between the rails now. No doubt not a single volunteer or passenger knew what would 'hit' the railway (like all worldwide!) from about February 2020. Ignorance sometimes can be bliss.
I've had a few rides like this, with steamies on the Llangollen Railway. 5 to be exact, my favourite being the 4th one in the cab of Foxcote Manor. The first time I was allowed to look inside the Driver's DMU cab, was on a cold and wet February day some years ago before Covid ruined everything. The rain came down very heavily, and no-one was bold enough to come along for the ride. No-one, that is, except me. I was allowed the look inside the Driver's cab, because I was the only passenger on board. It happened on the move between Llangollen and Berwyn, if my brain serves me correctly.
That brings back memories from the distant past, when it was possible to sit behind the driving compartment and enjoy a forward view. You were lucky to meet up with a driver who was happy to let you film. A big thank you to both you and the driver for sharing this fascinating view of the line.
The driver is a regular viewer of admiralsconer so appreciates the kind of videos I make. He sent me a message today to say he is pleased with the results .
@@ADMIRALSCORNER Its nice to know when a driver watches your videos, even better when he shares his view with your audience. I must get back to the WSR, it is one of favourites, especially as I travelled from Taunton to Minehead back in British Rail days.
@@ADMIRALSCORNER I only had a little Kodak still camera back then, I wish I'd known at the time, that services were shortly to be withdrawn, I would have taken some pictures. It was on a Saturday, the train was 11 coaches long, there were no spare seats, from memory it was made up of various Swindon Intercity DMS. I believe the passenger numbers were linked to changeover day at Butlins.
Best video i have ever seen thankyou admiral for the ride on the dmu on west somerset railway from australia and admiral you should take a trip to australia and take a ride on the puffing Billy steam engine in melbourne victoria you will love it..😃
So kind of Robin to offer me the opportunity. I am glad he is happy with how things turned out. Such volunteers deserve to highlighted for what they do.

Well, that looked like a boring way to spend a couple of hours! I'm not in the least bit jealous, at all! Seriously, another fine series of videos, well done on getting permission! I'll be there in 2 weeks with a freedom of the line ticket for the week. If you get approached by an enthusiastic Yorkshire-man don't panic, it may be me saying hello!
I see it's 40mins long.Did you compress the file further or did you just use a lot more memory. When I do a vid I find a 20 min vid can take about 2gb.Love the cab ride by the way.

We love to hear the sound of their whistle in the area. Hopefully that sound will return to Minehead next year.
Spent a lot of my childhood in train cabs on the mainline, great days

@@colemartin7225 You do enjoy your sounds don't you!
I was riding directly behind the newly restored GWR 9351 today and the sounds were fantastic climbing up to Washford in the WSR..
Thanks for a great video.
It was enjoyable to have been in that situation.

vey nice trip lovely scenery ,does it get busy there in the summer?
The recent good weather is certainly making things busier around here!
Have a look at Mike's May 2022 Steam Gala (long) weekend videos: large numbers of passengers. Great!
What was all those community houses on your right hand side @20:21
Those are static caravans used as holiday homes by the sea. People can either rent or buy their own there.
Journeys end. Nice to view while having breakfast.
In felt hungry after that fine experience!
Those yellow plants look like Great Mullein plants, sole food source for the mullein caterpillars and moth.
I hadn't come across that one before but should be aware of it now! Thank you.
just a brilliant video. just one aspect missing. train speed and engine rpm

Yes its a real time recording of 40 minutes High quality video which resulted in a large file of 6.7 Gb!
Can someone explain the joints and bits of track in the 4 foot at 6:29?
They are curious, can anyone tell us more about them?
I did not relìse that alòt of work invovled getting the dmu ready for the journey
Easier preparation than for a steam loco but still a lot of work to be done every day. It is not as easy as on a road coach, as you might imagine!
