We had to give up our little homestead to move to a place suitable to our needs. It has been really hard, but luckily I have had the opportunity to hatch some guineas for a friend along the way! And now we are saving up for a dream home to re-start our homestead all because of you! Thank you guys so much, your video never fail to amuse me I watch every single one! Where do you live? It‘s definitely not the breed. I have Cemanis and they hatch at about 90%. Much better than my silkies, MEZK and Sebrights. I sometimes even send eggs from my Cemanis via mail and even those hatch very well, about 60-80%. Here the breed is quite common and easy to get, also not that expensive. • @erickcaballero140
      @erickcaballero140 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Because the black color is a genetic mutations ( fibromelanosis) that affect melanin production in the birds tissues (cells), eggs are made of calcium carbonate, in other words all eggs 🥚 are white when they are formed....in the oviduct there are pigments that attach to the egg, Two pigments are responsible for the spectrum of chicken egg color. Shades of greens and blues are caused by the pigment biliverdin, while protoporphyrin is responsible for reddish-brown hues. Melanin is not present in the oviduct, at least not in high quantities.

    Negative Nancy Here....you can call me Karen. If you're serious about hatching reliably, control your humidity and don't be opening the lid constantly. Place your incubator indoors.....at a constant temp...no drafts....preferably 70 degrees or higher so the incubator can keep the temp high enough without struggle. Keeping in a shed or garage is asking for trouble with temp and humidity problems/fluctuations.

    I think you should do this again but in a more controlled environment, where weather isn't a factor. It would be more fair for the smaller cheaper incubators. Plus a lot of people do their hatching inside so that the weather won't affect hatching rates anyways, so it might even be more helpful for those people, especially if they have a tighter budget, and can only afford an incubator that's a little cheaper.

    Oh my gosh, I LOVED this video! Not only am I a newish chicken mommy (RIR flock of 8 females and one rooster, and 2 buffs that I am IN LOVE with so much!!!...)! And now, I am on day four of my 9 hatching Buff Orpington eggs in my first incubator. I am sooooooooooooo freaking excited that I can't see straight! I have set first candling for next Wednesday which is 9 days after putting in incubator. I'm so worried about temperature and humidity and keeping it correct but I'll check on them a couple of times daily and try to figure out how best to keep them right. Currently my temperature is running between 101 and 103 F and humidity is between 60 and 65 which I'm afraid is too much but I don't know how to reduce it. I know mama chickens get off of their eggs on occasion to go grab a quick bite, water, and have a gigantic poop but dang, I'm terrified of opening it in hopes of lowering the humidity on these pre lock down days.

    i bought that cheap yellow amazon one to try and help me hatch abandoned blackbird eggs and i realized real fast that it wasnt holding temp so i continued with the way i was originally incubating them which was a heat mat with a dish of water and plastic container over it with the same little black temp/humidity readers i had to rotate them myself and was surprised i was able to get them to develop as far as they did because i couldnt control the temp of the heat mat so i had to stack the eggs on top of layers of cotton wool and keep adjusting it every few hours (to the point i was setting alarms every 3 hours to check they were still ok, yes... i was determined to make them hatch) they should have taken 2 weeks to hatch and they were about 3-4 days away before 1 egg exploded and the other egg stopped moving i was devastated. it was my first time ever trying to hatch eggs and i got so attached to them from the moment i seen their tiny heartbeat amongst all the veins. i even gave them names 😭RIP Jellybean and Shrimpy

    I'm glad you did this. When looking at incubators, that first one you introduced kept popping up as different names and brands but all the same color, design, size, etc. I figured it was a cheap mass-produced one that is sold to multiple companies to make them a few bucks fast. Manufacturers who do that are very sketchy in my eyes. If it's sold under multiple names, never buy it.

    There is something relaxing looking at baby chicks. Cool trial. You never really put a price on the best one. That would have been beneficial. I always wondered if the "cheep" one worked.
    Take care and stay safe 💖💖💖

    At 12:29 I couldn't even have any hay due to my allergies. I have a really bad pollen allergy. I rarely go out because of it but i do go out for school normally. When I go out I have a to take allergy medicine and sometimes when even the smallest amount of pollen is around me.
    I can go out normally but I choose not to because my skin can still itch even though I've taken my allergy medicine.

    These are the BEST kind of experiments!!
    I haven't gotten an incubator yet, but it def helps for future purchasing ideas. The Lego block incubator is such a clever and fun idea! lol
    Hearing the chicks chirp from inside the eggs is just so stinking cute! I can't wait to start hatching eggs on my farm! We have always just let the chickens/ducks hatch them naturally.

    What were your thoughts on the little giant incubators? There are virtually zero good reviews for that model which is odd since they are sold everywhere. Thanks!
