What a wonderful buffalo to test equipment on. Gives me confidence in my equipment and I go braid to leader alot so it may be mental bur nice to see connection knot hold! Have a great week and glad you got out!
i know! It's not a bad way to TEST YOURSELF. Do u know how to play the fish, did u tie a good knot! You land a few 8 lb buffalo and u start to build confidence : )
Those bluegill usually hang around to mid November. But sometimes they never show at all. It was rare for me to fish to the right side of the lock because I had to deal with all the buffalo and drum. By the way that crappie you caught on video before had some great genes.
You got it. Its all buffalo and drum there and i lost 10 jigs already because there all kinds of structure on the bottom that they run into in 9 out of 10 cases. Even today i didn't want to fish there but there was just no fish nowhere else. I saw some fish by the mooring cells but they may have been buffalo or something like that as they didn't even look at my lures... So i went there knowing that i will lose a few jigs and will tangle with some rough fish ...
Perhaps before you spool the line on the reel put the filler spool in bucket of hot water to warm it up then spool it on your reel while it is warm and it should take the set on the reel spool and be less likely to coil off...
ummm it was spooled 6 years ago. I have a 5 year old video where i caught a 40" musky on that rod and reel, with that same line... Check it out: th-cam.com/video/eazD7nUCO_0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=K9s4wvxC_8DPeVfo
I have been hanging around for a number of your videos and I just noticed how you mounted the rod holders on the back of your boat. Thanks for some ideas on my lund wc 16
The polyester reacted to the cold making it stiffer then the wind caught a loose coil and the rest is history. Anyways that's my story a d I'm sticking to it.
Hi Victor,is possible that you lost some 30 yards of extra line due to line memory and slack that made some of it,I can call the Extra spolled line abandoned the spool, nothing to worry about, fishing goes on,gear gets sorted!👍🎣
how does it come off like that though? U can have all the memory and twist, but it can't make that many loops. If line is tight, no line will come off no matter how much twist. It didn't have any twist though, u can tell on the video that these are the loops from the spool and there is no twist loops. The only way i can imagine to do this kind of thing is to BACK REEL. But this reel doesn't have back reel switch at all!
Nice buffalo! They are very good eaters if you can get the big ones because they are suckers but unfortunately suckers are notorious for bones. Love fishing them during spring spawn with green grubs. It could be that they are spawning again because of the colder weather? That drag on that reel sounds nicer than expected as well. Is it loud or is it because its close to the mic or camera that it appears louder than usual? If it is loud that puts my stella to shame in terms of drag noise.
Yes, suckers are notorious for bones. Also this species has slime like nothing else. Common carp feels dry as a drum compared to it. Microphone is not the reason for the sound as its same microphone for all videos. I tuned the spring just a little bit as ive shown in that video about tuning the drag on shimano reels
Victor, That buffalo put up a good fight. Its funny to see you running around the boat to keep it from getting off. The daiwa jig heads do have soft hooks but they are still pretty capable of landing big fish. Just last week i caught a 20 lbs and 25 lbs grass carp on a .5 gram size 12 hook daiwa jighead. Both on the same jighead. What rod are you going to put the cardiff on now? I see you sanded down the cork knob on the reel also.
This is a chinese rods that has the same shade of gold as the cardiff. Also the handle on this rod is sealed cork and it matches the reel in both feel and look. However it feels VERY DEAD compared to my usual gear and its unlikely you will ever see that reel on that rod again. I have to show you a close up video of the cork now... it looks PRETTY! I got a much bigger buffalo a couple of months ago on the hold hook size 10.. Buffalo pulls with consistent force. But these medium size bass are so explosive that even with my soft drag the hook straightens all the time. But it also depends how it gets hooked and where the pressure falls..
I do lots of saltwater bank fishing with spinning reels. Just like you I prefer mono filament/copolymer line. I hate lots of memory. Any verivas line recommendations in 12-15 lb range for saltwater. Thanks vic.
Victor, About the line mess. How, Why? This could be one of the great unsolved mysteries. Why when we lose our hair it grows more than ever in out ears?
Its 10 days later, and , put a gun to my head, i still can't tell u how this happened. I have transported this reel on that boat for about 9000 miles in just last year and a half (thats the odometer on my truck). Easily 40 000 miles since i bought this reel 6 years ago. Fun fact, this line is 5 years old, and i landed a musky with it, on a tiny jig and a trout magnet.. Check that video if u haven't: th-cam.com/video/eazD7nUCO_0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=h4HC5eb8yWOBUDim
perhaps it the fishing gods' way of telling me its time to change this line. I landed a 15 lb flathead with it as well, just two months ago, but i think u saw that one. This line is unmistakeable. I was gona give it another 5 years before replacing : ).
Possible you did not spoil the line quite tight enough and the wind caught the line driving down the road. Just blew the line back off the reel. Could have happened to anyone.
Too much speed is the answer for your riddle, slow down a little bit Victor 🙂. I understand very well the excitement for fishing 🤪. All the best from Romania.
I have never heard of the Shimano Cardiff until last night. A guy is selling a couple of them. I am looking to pick up another Shimano spinning reel, ideally for a light or medium light set up. Would you recommend going with the Shimano Cardiff or Shimano Vanford or Shimano Vanford FA for this application? Or something else by Shimano?
I have done detailed comparisons of all 3 of these reels and they are all one and the same reel with some small difference. U can check the reviews to find out the exact difference. If u are buying today, and if they all cost the same, probably the New Vanford has a small edge. But if there is a meaningful price difference i would get whatever is cheaper. More important is not to buy something stupid with H or G in the model name. Buy a normal 2500S from whichever of these is chepaer
if u check my last few videos u will see i hook into a bunch of these and they are super slimy. If i was fishing any other spot i would expect bass or something and would have been excited!

The one @ 2 minutes was awesome...
In my opinion Victor, since you are in your winter gear the cold caused the reel to contract and the shrinkage lead to the line unraveling.
Shrinkage leads to nothing good 😂
