Is it SAFE to eat Fish from a RETENTION Pond?

  • Have you ever thought about eating fish that you caught from a retention pond? Or perhaps a small natural spring fed pond? Well studies suggest that it may not be a great idea. The herbicides may not be a problem for human consumption, especially since fish do not tend to accumulate much herbicide in their flesh and the consumption of these fish would be infrequent and not a substantial portion of your diet. However, there is growing evidence that some of the herbicides that we consider safe with respect to human consumption are not. For example, you may have heard about the popular lawsuit with Monsanto? You may know them as Roundup weed killer, They were just ordered to pay $289M in damages to a man who alleged glyphosate-based herbicide caused his cancer. Interesting enough, the International Agency for Research on Cancer list glyphosate as a "Probable carcinogenic to humans". Now /insecticides are absolutely dangerous, these are the chemicals that are sprayed to combat mosquito for example. Insecticides have been found in the fat storage of fish in retention ponds and are a known carcinogen. So what happens? How does it get exposed to the fish? Well, when it rains the chemicals are washed off into the pond but they also are ingested through the food chain, for example: The small crickets, grasshoppers and dragonfly's are exposed to the chemicals, they are then eaten by smaller fish such as baby bass bluegill. The larger bass eat the smaller fish. I would highly recommend NOT eating from these ponds but hey, if you are starving then you have to do what you have to do. Let me know your thoughts in the comment section below, do you think it's safe? Have you ever eaten fish from a small pond?

    I have fished retention ponds for years and have never been brave enough to eat any fish I have caught. I worry too much about what is actually in the fish if I were to ever consume it. Thank you for always giving us your insight and knowlege about fishing. Your forever fan!

    I cannot understand how people fish at a local cemetery. The body’s of the people break down. They’re loaded with formalin and other things used to embalm people. Caskets break down even the concrete graveliners will crack open, and rainfall puts the liquid from the graves into the water table…. The water table rinses through the soil into the pond, causing the fish to become tainted.

      In China we cultivate carps in the retention ponds by paddy fields where fertilizer and pesticide are heavily applied. We eat a lot of them. The real pollutants are heavy metals produced by manulfactors.

    I have a similar pond behind my house. I hear the insecticide planes flying overhead from time to time so I don’t want to eat the fish. I do catch some nice tilapia, mayan cichlids, and smallmouths though. There’s also a lot of soft shell turtles and gators

  • @dinoharrison5138
    @dinoharrison5138 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Josh, I guess a main question you have to ask is "What part of the country do you live/fish in?" I see the Tilapia you were catching (nice fish btw) but the only ones of those here in Ohio are in aquariums! lol Where you live is dependent on "IF" they spray around a retention pond. We have some here that the only thing that goes into them is storm water. If you travel across the country there are retention ponds that are in farm field that were made when they put the road in (dug out the dirt to make the entrance/exit ramps). Some of those ponds are EXCELLENT, but to your point if you ask permission from a farmer to fish it, ask him what chemicals he uses. I have eaten some fish out of Ohio ponds and never had a problem. Good video and a lot of "food for thought." As always, Be Well and God Bless! ✝

    • @Saltyscales
      @Saltyscales  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Dino for the comment, those are all valid points. I guess the only true way to know the level of bacteria and chemicals would be to have it tested. I will still stick to open water, natural sources lol.

    What lures were you using? Also, what do you consider a retention pond. Where I live in north Texas we have several very large, huge reservoir lakes that they damned up decades ago and are run by the army corps of engineers. Many of them are located in suburbs now and are surrounded by houses. Do you think fish from these lakes/reservoirs are safe to eat? Thanks.

    • @Saltyscales
      @Saltyscales  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Bob, the lure is a little feather jig that my grandfather gave me before he passed. Its deadly, a retention pond is an artificial lake with vegetation around the perimeter, and includes a permanent pool of water in its design is to catch rain water. Most say they are somewhat safe but with the new revelation of the Roundup cancer facts I would not even consider it. We humans think we are smarter than we are sometimes and greed is a great motivator to hide health facts.

    I have eaten them years ago out of rock pits, before there were ever any homes built around them. I have to question fisheries such as Okeechobee where there are massive algae blooms from the runoff of the sugarcane fields, even in the everglades where I live they recommend that you only consume a certain amount, and for woman who are expecting they say they should not eat any at all. I no longer eat fish that I catch out of the glades, and I question myself for having eaten fish out of Okeechobee, those catfish and specs were good ..haha. Good video, excellent topic... Have you ever had fish out of the glades or the big O?
