- As America grapples with the demand from many of her citizens to take down Confederate statues, she asks Germany for advice on how to deal with it.
Hi! I'm Kelly and I am an American who lived in Germany for 18 wonderful months. While I lived abroad before in Turkey and had done quite a bit of traveling beforehand, those 18 months in Germany definitely broadened my perspective of Germany, Europe, and even the US in so many different ways! I wanted to share my perceptions with you guys through TH-cam so that maybe you can gain context to things you've heard about, or learn new information or a different perspective, or maybe this is everything you've heard before and further confirms your world view. But it wasn`t a joke ... the per capita consumption of beer in Germany is around 102 liters, thats about 27 gallons. So we always have beer ;-)

French fries is another stupid vocabulary from the US. It's actually Belgium fries. Fries are a Belgium invention. In WWII, Americans who fought in the french speaking part of Belgium (the Ardennes or bulge) discovered the delicious fries and because this was the french speaking part of Belgium they actually thought they where in France. So when they returned to the US they called it french fries. It's really insulting to Belgians when people call fries, french fries.

My main issue is that democracy doesn't work that well with ignorance, if we were to make sure education would be the number one priority we wouldn't have many of the problems. Don't get me wrong I love this country and everything has to offer, but it could be so much better

Delightful as always. The only thing unrealistic: America does not ask Germany for advice. It's more of the opposite. Except that Germany doesn't ask for it but gets the "advice" anyway. Like "Stop building Nordstream II or we'll punish everyone envolved". But very funny with a deep background as always. And you spare no effort, obviously. Must have been a lot of work to produce the video. Respect.
Both my children were born in the US and therefore citizens. When my older son went to pre-school and I learned about the systematic 100% brain washing with Pledge of Allegance, natianol anthem and prayer every morning (South Carolina) my wife and I decided that it's really time to leave the US. At the time we just had received our parole for the greencard but we actually left before we got it. I lived there through 9/11 and was really shocked about the reactions. But I'm so glad that I'm not there anymore when I see what's going on today

I went to Germany in November 2019. I was surprised by the quality of the food, was blown away. I visited the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp and it was a heavy experience.
i went to Dachau and it was a chilling, heavy experience. Absolutely necessary but not something I want to do again.
Meanwhile, I've visited Mount Vernon and a few other plantations and didn't get the sense of the all the pain and suffering that happened there at all. it really struck me recently how bizarre that is which is why i wanted to make sure i incorporated that into my sketch.

Visiting concentration camps is mandatory in German schools. I remember going to Flossenbürg at age 10 and 6 years later Plötzensee near Berlin. It is a haunting experience and it leaves us with the resolve to never let anything like that happen again. Watching America falling for the same crap my ancestors had fallen for is more than disturbing.
@@althelas Actually never went to a concentration camp with school. Don't get me wrong we still got the message and f*ck nazis but mandatory seems not to be a case for schools (enven though my school was named after the Geschwister Scholl).
@@althelas It's not universally mandatory, because it depends on which state you go to school in. Or maybe that is a more recent thing - my time in school was more than 25 years ago.
DRSNova and how far you are away from one of the remaining camps. I went to school about 40 years ago. To my knowledge, most of the existing concentration camp in the western part were „just“ what the name implies. Camps to collectively arrest people. Dachau being an exemption.

The foam depends a lot on where you buy your beer and what sort it is. Growing up in Hessen, I remember this being a thing but living in Hamburg now for a few years, I don't think I've ever heard anyone saying a single word about the foam on a beer. Telling people here that it takes 7 minutes to properly poor a glass of beer would get you labeled extremely weird by most people here - for pooring beer into a glass instead of just drinking from the bottle like a normal person. xD

I think it is done to make the students come to realize the magnitude of the atrocities done to innocent people in the name of the German people. Watching a video can not accomplish what a visit can.

Hey Kelly, as so many people comment on your „Germany“-Shirt: in my oppinion it‘s a shirt of a fan of the German national soccer team. Each of the four stars symbolizes a World Cup win. Even the official DFB-shirts carry the stars (as do the shirts of the teams of Brazil [5 stars], Italy and so on). So in my view there‘s no political „message“ Connecticut to the shirt.

The German soccer teams sports the Black and White dresses, sometimes with some Red elements.... This is because the Black Red Gold theme already was preoccupied by belgium that has the same colors..... Like actually frech and US ha e both blue White and Red)
Young DFB at that time referred to the old German flag before the World wars, this was Black White Red. So soccer teams used White Shirts and Black pants and earned 4 Stars for four World Cup winnings.
The symbolism is clear and unquestionable, this is a soccer Shirt and so, not even a political Statement.... Maybe the best choice you could have done for Such a comedy on actual, cultursl and political things.

That's 1000% how the US are seen in the world. The US knows really everything better than anyone around in the world.
Everyone is free in the US, if you don't have to work and your company punish you in cause of the weak employe rights, or if you not in weak health with the greatest health care system in the world, or if you are prepared for retirement with enough money or, or, or.
Or more simple, everyone is free in the US, if you are rich enough to pay your freedom. If not, your srewed. 🤷♂️
Rich people pay taxes, so they are not free either 😂 but some of them are smart enough to get outside the US and going offshore or maybe using other strategies to not pay that enormous amount of money to the government...

from talking with friends and other americans, it seems to be a mixed experience. i had a friend who always sat down during the pledge and my teachers were fine with it.

@@Alexander-dt2eq I mean, the pledge of allegiance has only one connotation for Germans: nazi indoctrination. Stuff like that got used instill absolute obedience - to the point that students got used to spy on their parents. The "under god" problem seems kinda small in comparison.
Majority of schools you can sit down. I havent recited the pledge after I turned 11. Ages 12-18 we just listened to thibgs that were going on in our school. Texas, Alaska, and your southern states are going to be the sticklers for the pledge.
*Edit Im wrong about our school not doing anything to reflect on the US. After September 11 every month we had a moment of silence for all the fallen people. The school didnt really care what you did with the time as long as you were quiet. For all they cared you could sit there and scratch your butt.
That CAN happen but it's exceptionally rare, even in the South and Texas. Teachers will usually ask everyone to stand and face the flag and stay silent and off their phones, if they don't want to participate.
Typically if a kid takes objection to that, the teacher explains that it is completely fine to object to the pledge and to choose not to participate. But at this point in time, it is a part of our culture, and the majority finds it offensive to sit, talk, be on your phone, or turn from the flag. The teacher then explains that teaching cultural awareness is part of the job and that they are educating global citizens - that you don't have to agree with someone's culture (even your own) but you should be respectful of it.
Obviously that's not a verbatim script teachers use, but that's a pretty basic conversation teachers have with students. Around 7th/8th grade (12-14 years old) kids start pushing back against the pledge of allegiance. Additionally, it is common to have students who are unable to participate, even by standing, because of religious reasons. This is no big deal. They just quietly continue on with their work. By high school (age 14-18), depending on the teacher, it is common to see nobody saying the pledge, nobody standing, or even kids talking through the pledge or texting during it.
Of course these are generalizations. We have nearly 4 million teachers in America. Most states require the teacher to "lead the pledge" daily, but it is unconstitutional to force students to say the pledge, and the court has ruled "standing silently" is a violation of their freedom of speech. A teacher may ask them to stand silently but may not require them to.

I'm Dutch, and until twenty years ago, there still were strong anti-German feelings..& But by now the newer generation Germans finally lost the WW2 shadow,( I can only speak about what I see & hear. Don't know how other countries feel. However, Germany owned up to the shit it did in ww2 ,while not being able to get any compassion for the horrors the allies inflicted upon Germans civilians , The fire bombing of Dresden, the rape & plunder by Soviets as revenge..
The british history books only started teaching about the post WW2 relations between Germany and the UK about the year 2000. You can realy see the huge difference from one generation to the other.

I am a German, and my feeling is that a major shift in the perception from outside, but especially from the inside of Germany, changed with the world cup of '06. I was a teenager back than, but it felt there was a major shift, especially how we saw ourself, how our modern identity as Germans has changed. For the first time, I was seeing people having the german flag, but not as a symbol to go against others (as which it was generally seen when you had one of them), but rather wearing it while dancing and laughing with people from all around the world. It was the feeling that we could be Germans without having to hold back while being at the same time able to see ourselves as equals with others, neither dominating agressors, nor beatend down loosers.
I think this great shift in how we see ourself as Germans also translated alot into how we are perceived by the international community.

Wow, i have been thinking about this too. You dealt with this current issue of statue pretty brilliantly. I don't know why folk want to keep statues of people that committed gruesome crimes against fellow humans and their statues standing to glorify them. Not even anyone that was in the Third reich govt has their names on any thing muchless making statues of them..Crime is Crime.✌🏾👍🏼

I agree, but you cant force people to take a statue down thats on private property. In Nashville Tennessee there is an ugly as shit confederate statue. The statue is gold and silver plated. The state and citizens can't do anything about it because its on private property.

Two quotes that are attributed to Oscar Wilde. And I think that quotes have some validity in them.
Patriotism is a kind of pride that IMO has no substance. In contrast another (translated) quote from a song: "Be proud of your path of life not the location where it began", which IMO expresses a way more sensible way of pride. Like Germans take quietly some pride in their industrial and economic strength/achievements and quality products like cars, machines etc. (amongst others) but likely not boast about being born in a good place.

So far the way things are going Biden is going to win. Just from newspapers asking people who they are going to vite for Biden smashes Trump. That's the difference, he is mentioned because of his participation in the resistance of the 20th July, but there were Names like Gen. Dietl and likewise. I am a bit torn as a soldier because I can appreciate the military craftsmanship but nevertheless these soldier fought for the wrong cause and an oppressive system in a war of aggression.
Was about to say that you had generals actually refusing to participate in ethnic cleansing and even tried to kill Hitler. The reason the death camps were created and gas chambers were used to mass kill, was actually the fact that most humans are humans and many couldn't execute mass executions personally without suffering a breakdown of their own. The death squads of Waffen SS were made up of the greatest sociopaths available to the regime. It's a really horrible chapter of German history and world history. I think Germany is trying hard to make everybody aware that this could happen eventually everywhere if you are not vigilant and know your own history.

You're walking on thin ice when speaking about history. Y'know, the historical truth is always defined by the winner. But don't be afraid, go ahead... 😉
The historical truth, written by the winner can however succumb to the factual truth. That's why we nowadays know that e.g. cleopatras beauty was a myth created by the romans and that she was one of the most brilliant leaders of her time. It's how we (the rest of the world) know how america was invaded by the settlers and the history of slavery.

If you want people to remember history show them just as many black heroes who freed their brothers and sisters from slavery because if anyone, those people deserve statues. And why is it idiotic totake down the rushmore monument? Four ugly faces carved into a place that once held great importance and belonged to native americans.

@Vincent H that was a misunderstanding. It wasn't my direct intention to compare the founding fathers (still all very very flawed) to Hitler, but rather the confederate generals. You know, the ones who wanted to enslave people because they thought having more melanin than they made them inhumane and not worthy of being equals? And yes the founding fathers shaped the USA, as the land that was forcefully taken by illegal immigrants who forced the natives to stay in reservations to live in systematic poverty, if they even allowed that and didn't just murder them. Mount Rushmore is indeed quite a good representation for this behaviour seeing that the mountain was taken, against a contract that had been made, by people and presidents who later had hundreds of the people this piece of land actually belonged to murdered.
So in your opinion having statues of Hitler or Göbbels would be educational? Would it really be okay to have statues of Rudolf Höß or Richard Baer in Auschwitz? Because that's history and we need to remember all parties?

Liked it Kelly! Of course! ,A first thought, and it's true for everybody- but certainly for us, is that the best advice would be humility. I don't think we Americans tend to be very humble, though the pandemic will change that. The interesting thing about your suggestion around the Statue of Liberty as paradigm for future statues is that it is forward-looking. It focuses on our virtues and aspirations and would set a tone for the outlook of the country that focused on tomorrow. Your work has really become a glass through which I think we can better see ourselves-which is what the whole extra-cultural experience is all about. And you don't hold back!
