I’m from Mexico and we were taught the true history of slavery in school.
When I finally immigrated to the USA, I was genuinely shocked at the amount of incorrect/omitted information (and outright lies) being taught to the general public about their own country, within their own country.
It is terrifying how successful the institutions have been at keeping most people ignorant to this and at basically rewriting history for nefarious purposes and personal gains…
They’ve been successful to the point that you will be attacked (sometimes even physically), simply for trying to discuss the *full* reality of historic (and current) slavery.
These are wild days we live in.

I remember that I was fairly disturbed 😳 because as an INDIGENOUS NATIVE AMERICAN..I already knew some things about my Tribe. Thomas Sowell is an amazing historian and he has other series…I recently watched the truth about the BRITISH role in stoping slavery along with ours and FRANCE as well. Dr. Thomas Sowell is amazing, he's in his 90s now and still sharp as a tack! He's taught at several universities including Harvard and Cornell. He's one of the most important and influential American philosophers and economists. He studied under Milton Friedman, a Nobel prize winning economist who identified the root cause of inflation. Thomas Sowell is incredible, he grew up in segregated Harlem, dropped out of highschool to fight in the Korean War and then went to Harvard. He's an incredible guy, has written many books, and should be taught in every school. There are videos of a young Thomas Sowell arguing with a young Joe Biden about how his policies were destroying the black community.
You need to watch more of his videos, they will blow your mind. Did you know England and America ended slavery around the world?

We say "their own people" or "our own people". fact is, we're all just people. The only people that are "my own people" are my family and friends that I love. And they may have different skin color or cultures or whatever. Sharing a geographical location or skin color doesn't mean we get along. I'd rather love those around me for who they are, not what they are or what they look like or where they come from.
Sowell is amazing! I'm glad you reacted to this. I love seeing people react to Sowell because every time, I learn a little more from him and I learn a little from you (the reactor) too. So thank you for sharing a bit of a lesson with me.

I am descended from a free woman of color who lived in New Orleans during the war of 1812. She was wealthy enough to hire tutors for her children. One of her sons went on to become the mayor of a nearby city. I don't know if she owned slaves, but it is possible. One thing I will add is that I am 71 now, and during my life I have from time to time found out that what I was told as a child was not true. I've known about the fact that Africans enslaved other Africans and sold them on the coast for almost 50 years. In fact, most of what I was taught by my parents and school was wrong in some way. So don't be surprised if you discover something like this, get used to it, there's more to come.

Here's a different way of looking at it:
    Let's say you have three tribes - Tribe A, B, and C
    - Tribe A lives in a place where the ground is rocky, swampy, or otherwise doesn't grow plant life well; wildlife isn't abundant so food is harder to obtain. The men, women, children, and old folks all have their roles to play and work to keep the tribe functioning. In today's world, this would similar to the thousands of small towns all throughout the Appalachians.
    - Tribe B lives along a river, so the farmland there is of excellent quality, and food is easier to obtain. Individual family units are able to gain some small amount of personal influence over the tribe, but they are still ruled by a council. These folks would be your suburban PTA HOA types.
    - Tribe C lives along a river crossing. Not only are the supplies in abundance just as much here, they also control the trade that comes in and goes out of that area. It's no coincidence why several nation's capitals are along river crossings. These folks would be your current day cutthroat business types.
Tribe C would be the first to grow to such a size that they are able to field an army. They would have enough forces to send abroad to acquire more goods, to maintain their personal levels of comfort. Tribe B would have just enough resources stockpiled to trade with them in order to avoid physical harm, basically a "take it and get out of here" type scenario. Tribe A is doing all they can to just survive, so they don't have the excess resources to trade, nor are they prosperous enough to have a proper fighting force. They are very much the weakest force, especially when Tribe C knows that they are powerful enough to "acquire" a labor force. Back in the day, an acre of ground was roughly equivalent to the amount of ground a healthy adult male could physically work/plant/till/garden. It didn't Tribe C or Tribe B long to figure out that they can double their resource output, and therefore trade surplus, if they had a second set of hands available. I'm not saying it's right, but there was once a point in human history where it had reasonable sense. Keep in mind, this was when trade was done with physical goods, long before money as a concept was necessary. Once the idea of currency /was/ introduced though, slavery unfortunately became that much more profitable because there would be people on the other side of that river crossing looking to buy.

KS - Thank you for what appeared to be a genuine reaction to the information being presented. Your question, "why was this not taught in school?" is the ultimate question for our government entity known as the National Education Administration (NEA) and school districts around the country. I would add to your question, "why have/why are these voices and ideas being left out, possibly suppressed, in our education system and schools?"
I could continue with my thoughts on the subject but instead I will offer this suggestion, read/listen to the entire book of which this video is only an excerpt, "Black Rednecks and White Liberals" by Thomas Sowell. Dr. Sowell is a great American and well learned man who has spent his life in study to bring to us his research in subjects on economics, social theories, etc. He speaks quite openly about what he thought as a young man and how those thoughts have changed over time.

The Berber tribe of Northeast Africa was in the slave trade for Centuries before the Atlantic Slave trade, including going as far back as Sumerians, Egyptian, Greeks, Romans, and more. After the end of the Atlantic slave trade, the Barbary Coast Slave Trade{ Named after the Berbers} continued into the 20th century dealing in White Slaves too. Being so brave as to raid places like Ireland, England, and Iceland, but never mainland Europe.
The United States Marines' song has a line that goes " From the Halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Tripoli" This is a direct reference to the Barbary Coast Slave Trade, and the United State's fight{ with the help of the British} against it, as well as the practice of slavery in South American countries.
Anthony Johnson ( c. 1600 - 1670) was a man known for achieving wealth in the early 17th-century Colony of Virginia. Born in Angola, he was one of the first African Americans whose right to own a slave for life was recognized by the Virginia courts.
" Slave" comes from Slav, Slavic people are the first known people to be enslaved.
" Shackles" used to hold slaves, originates from the Ottoman or possibly Sumerian Empire's term for the Currency used " Shekels ", originally formed the same shape for easier trade.
Division is the key to their success, there's a reason they stopped teaching all of this in schools. Along with the constitution.

Slavery started as soon as humanity settled and started farming. There is ample evidence that many various civilizations took up the practice independently from each other. A slaves can grow more food during a year than they consume so it is just profitable. It can be even argued that the rise of civilizations was in large part because of slavery. The fact that it was slaves who were doing manual labor was what gave the slave owners time to create art, philosophy, do research and so on. As such the practice was firmly baked in to all ancient civilizations we know of.
Slavery started to die out (as mentioned in the video) because of consolidation of peoples in to nations (you do not enslave your own) and because of religion. Christianity and muslin religions had a rule that you cannot enslave people of your own faith. This meant that getting slaves has become harder and harder. In Europe before roughly the tenth century most slaves were captives in religious wars (Muslims enslaved Christians and Christians enslaved Muslims) but the biggest source of slaves were the Slavic peoples of the Balkans and central and eastern Europe. The size of this slave trade was so vast that it is believed by some historians that this is what established trade routes and ties between nations that are the basis of European economy even today. Slaves would be taken from Slavic tribes, castrated (Prague and Verdun were popular slave markets were this was done) and those who survived would be sold to the Arabs.
It even gave the name to the practice itself. Latin word for Slav was Sclavus or Sclave and it became a name for what we today understand as slavery. Over a few centuries c was dropped and we have Slave. So yeah "a slave" literally means "a Slav".
It was only after the tenth century as the Slavic tribes consolidated into nations (like Poland, Chechia, Hungary, Latvia) and adopted Christianity that this slave trade has ended. It can be argued that ending slavery was one of the main reasons why those nations adopted Christianity in the fist place. The practice however persisted far longer in the Balkans and in the area that is today Ukraine and in the Caucasus (Arab slave traders would raid those areas via the black sea).
The creation of Slavic states took away source of Slaves from Western Europeans but it did not remove the demand for them. This is why when the technology allowed them to go to Africa, where slave trade was very well established and already practiced on a huge scale, Western Europeans jumped on the opportunity as it was still not seen across the world as morally wrong (that would come later) and was still insanely profitable.
All of this shows that indeed slavery was never about race. It was always about monies. Strong, powerful and organized making money out of the weaker, less powerful and less organized.
And by the way, the next time dear reader you hear about "white guilt" and how "all white people are evil" just remember where the "word" slave comes from. Slaves just happen to be white too.

The oldest written names are in cuneiform, and they are the name of a slave owner and two slaves.
[The tablet begins “Two slaves held by Gal-sal” and is then followed by the names of the aforementioned slaves: “En-pap X and Sukkalgir”.]

You are looking at it from a modern perspective. If you read history, most of history is about humans clinging on to survival, and barely at that. In those conditions, people will do incredibly cruel things to survive. If one tribe was short on women, they would raid another weaker tribe, kill the men, and take the women to become forced wives. The first settlement in the US was Jamestown I believe. The women there on average gave birth to 10 children for each woman. Despite those numbers, they were dying off faster than the could naturally replenish the numbers. They had to get people around the world to migrate there to keep the numbers up. For most of human history, the human races population was in the low millions. It wasn't until technology and science made major advancements that human began to thrive and the population shot up, but that was only very recently in the 1900's.

How do people no longer know about this? Slavery was nothing outrageous, it was the norm - in every corner of the world. It was like animal husbandry, perfectly accepted and normal throughout human history. Only to modern eyes is it so outrageous. This is a part of learning history - and why history should be studied - and not re-written to change it to make modern people feel better - and generally for a specific political agenda. I grew up Kenya, and the Arab slave trade left deep and abiding roots in all of East Africa - and is why Swahili contains so many Arabic words. Remember - how intensely tribal Africa is - warrior tribes and "cattle" tribes - to them, it was NOT "their own people." It was the idea of banning slavery that was so outrageous to so many - including the powerful and wealth West African kingdoms that had grown enormously rich from the trade. There are move channels and more Thomas Sowell on this touchy topic. "The British Crusade against Slavery" is probably worth a watch for you.

Please check out, Anthony Johnson (c. 1600 - 1670) was a man known for achieving wealth in the early 17th-century Colony of Virginia. Born in Angola, he was the first person to own a slave as recognized by the Virginia courts. Held as an indentured servant in 1621, he earned his freedom after several years, and was granted land by the colony. This was the first instance of a judicial determination in the Thirteen Colonies holding that a person who had committed no crime could be held in servitude for life.

And yet the British, while keeping their country free of slavery, brought slavery to America and the Caribbean. Prior to the revolution, America was a British colony ruled by Britain with British military stationed here to keep control over the colony. The majority of slaves were brought to America during this time by British subjects. America as a free country banned the importing of slaves in 1808.

The history slavery went something like this, all around the world: One group defeats another in battle, and wants to steal their food. But the harvest isn't ready yet, and their workers at home will need to harvest their own crops, so they can't harvest both crops. So, instead of killing their enemy they defeated, instead they keep them alive, long enough to harvest the crops. Then, once the crops are harvested, maybe you keep them alive long enough to plant the next crop, and so it begins.

I do know about this. One of my direct ancestors was bought for the price of two pigs to be the squaw (note: this word does not mean wife and is very offensive to Native people) of a white man. She ran away during a blizzard and lost a couple of toes due to frost bite. Generations later, I was adopted by a white family for a number of reasons, 1) I look white, 2) at the time, Native children were being taken from their families and forced to assimilate into white culture, 3) also at the time of my adoption, it was considered unnecessary to include any Native identification/information about Native children who were adopted. It took decades for me to find out my Native roots. It's sad when some people who don't know me look at me with disdain because they think I am only white (I am mixed), or when ignorant people make comments that they don't realize are offensive. But I simply smile and let it go. There is little point in making them feel bad or guilty for their ignorance. I would rather spend time with people who know me for who I am and who I don't have to explain myself to.

Mr. Sowell mentioned that it wasn't until 1922 when the British got sufficient control in Tanganyika, that slavery was stamped-out there. That was just a small part of the century-long struggle against slavery undertaken by the British Empire, after enough of the UK's population was pulled-out from poverty and realized the horror of what was happening to Africans. My ancestors were proud anti-slavery Royal Navy sailors, in large part because several members of our own family (and over 300,000 other English people) were kidnapped and enslaved by North Africans in the 17th century. They didn't want that horror to continue. I recommend viewing "The British Crusade Against Slavery" th-cam.com/video/_NoWIZv96KU/w-d-xo.html

It's interesting how the education system has changed over the years. I learned much of this in school -not special classes either - in the late 60's. When I came home to talk about it my family was amazed. They were first generation Americans from Finland, Their 'people' relatives, had been stolen over the years by Russia, before they came here. It's all very sad. I'm sorry, you will sort it out and let's see what you may do about it...perhaps educate others? Btw, there are STILL many people still enslaved in Africa. Candace Owens said the lowest number she found was 700,000 people. Others are enslaved in some other countries too.

The word slave is derived from the name of an ethnic group, the Slavs. So many Slavs were made slaves that the very name of their group became the name for slave in European and Arabic languages.
Present-day Slavs are classified into East Slavs (chiefly Belarusians, Russians, Rusyns, and Ukrainians), West Slavs (chiefly Czechs, Kashubians, Poles, Slovaks and Sorbs) and South Slavs (chiefly Bosniaks, Bulgarians, Croats, Macedonians, Montenegrins, Serbs and Slovenes)

Dr. Sowell did not deny the Atlantic slave trade. It existed and was bad. What he claimed was that for a long time before the Atlantic slave trade developed, there was slavery. It was not based primarily on race but upon who was weak enough to enslave. He also did not deny the racism that existed in American slavery. He put forth the idea that the racist justifications were developed to support the slavery that existed. That racism outlasted slavery. Finally, though he does not mention this in the video, you might want to check out the legal case of Casor vs. Johnson from the mid 1600s in Virginia. That case was the legal basis for permanent and hereditary slavery in the US. Both the slave and the slaver owner were black.

I knew about much of this from school and my own interests in History growing up in Ireland, in a general sense of the North Atlantic Slave trade, but slavery in Europe alone is well covered in 1000s of historical sources, such as Helots were subjugated population of slaves of Sparta, Roman slaves are from all over the Empire from conquered tribes from Britain, Africa, middle east, and so on taking from the losing side, Irelands best-known slave is St Patrick who was a Roman Britain who spent 6 years in Ireland before escaping than returning to being Christianity Patrick is a male given the name of Latin origin. It is derived from the Roman name Patricius.
Irish tribes enslaved each other after battles, same in Britain as Thomas Sowall it is weak that is enslaved.
The slave trade contributed to the expansion of the most powerful West African kingdoms such as Mali and Ghana, as the business became one of the main sources of foreign exchange for many years.
The phenomenon of slaveholding among African Americans, of black people owning other black people as slaves, has not received widespread attention. However, historians and other scholars have discovered records of slaveholding among blacks dating from the colonial period through the Antebellum era.
    I found this example:
One of the best-documented cases is that of William Ellison, a cotton gin maker from South Carolina. Ellison did not consider himself a black man but a man of colour, a mulatto. At a time when the vast majority of blacks in the South were slaves and almost all free blacks were poor, Ellison was one of the wealthiest free persons of colour in the South and wealthier than most whites. Ellison owned a large cotton plantation and more slaves than any other free person of colour in the South outside of Louisiana, even more than all but the richest white planters. In 1840 Ellison owned thirty slaves. By 1847 Ellison's property grew to 350 acres and thirty-six slaves. And on the eve of the Civil War, he owned sixty-three slaves. His slaves toiled in fields and were trained to make and repair cotton gins. They were unlikely to describe their owner as benevolent.
    also back in Africa
“Slaves were the main export of the kingdom of Kongo; the Asante Empire in Ghana exported slaves and used the profits to import gold. Queen Njinga, a 17th-century monarch of the Mbundu, waged wars of resistance against the Portuguese but also conquered as far as 500 miles inland and sold her captives to the Portuguese. Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates Jr.
I remember also being horrified watching Roots

i have watched a few reaction videos to Sowell and the one thing I do wish to mention is that people didn't see themselves as enslaving their own people. they enslaved people from other tribes and countries (depending on where they lived). race wasn't as solid of a concept but tribalism and nationalism were. great reaction video btw :)
