After watching it for the millionth time I came to understand that this is actually how "marriage" goes for the Na'vi. A man can choose a woman (or another man), and a woman can choose a man or another woman, but if the chosen one don't choose them also, they will not mate and bond for life.

I love how Neytiri smiles when he says "but this woman must also chose me".
You can tell it's not how the Na'vi men usually see it, they pick who they want.
It's a sweet mutuality of humanity that's she's unfamiliar but warm to. It's a nice touch.

That's exactly what I was thinking! How many Na'vi males would say 'you gotta choose me too'.
It wasn't because of that. He just alluded to the woman being her, together with they way he also looked at her tenderly. And the importance of choice more speaks for Neytiri individually and not Na'vi and their mating traditions as a whole because she was bound by duty to mate with Tsu'tey, as a Tsahik in training to the Olo'eyktan in training.
I love how Neytiri was actually nervous that Jake might choose the hunter lady 🤣

My personal theory is that na'vi can mate like humans do, but it's often just to blow off steam. But when they connect their hair, the act becomes way, WAY more personal. It's not just a way of relieving stress or making children. The two partners are literally united as one on a physical and neurological level.
With this in mind, the idea of people being able to do something that is somehow even more intimate than sex is mind boggling and really shows how masterfully designed the na'vi are as an alien race. So similar to us, yet capable of things we could never comprehend.
I was thinking that too actually. The way the Ikran connect with one hunter for their entire lives felt like something in a monogamous relationship for example. But obviously, they are just animals. So when Na'vi connect together it must be much more meaningful.

Actually, I'm not trying to be a smartass but they are called the Navi, they are quite strange tbh
My theory to why he made that face when they merged their hair plugs together:
We see throughout the movie that omaticaya's respect/emotions towards each other (animals and omaticaya), the land and life is clearly deeper than humans' emotions (in this case Jake's)
In a deleted scene Jake said they dont even have a word for lie, well yes the dont, cause they dont lie.
As well as their way to demonstrate love, they dont say "I love u" they say "I see u" for it has a deeper meaning, they take everything seriously (mainly life)
So my theory is when they merge their hair plugs and Jake feels what Neytiri feels is the first time he feels such a deep feeling/emotion. Like, he's been learning about omaticaya's way of life and how much they respect everything and now he's feeling for the very first time the same stuff omaticaya feel.

not really since the hair plugs aren’t used for sex - it’s used to fully see each other and feel how their bond intertwines. it’s kind of like a trial; if they don’t bond well, they don’t proceed further.
they do actually have sex together like how humans do (which is the actual mating part), so he didn’t feel an orgasm. he felt neytiri, her emotions, her thoughts, etc.
Fr like I wish us humans could make that type of connection with our significant other. It’s like you’re feeling their emotions right there so beautiful 🥺💙

She had chosen him as her lifelong partner, while Jake knew it would be impossible, especially when his mission was over. He gave his heart to her nonetheless. What a dilemma...
ive seen this movie 112 times since 2011 and it never clicked with me while watching this scene that he wouldnt be able to ever be with her at that point in time... like even if he had betrayed the humans right here they wouldve just imprisoned him

@@rufusdavis137 He was spending so much time in the avatar that he was confused about his real life. He went there for a reason: help the humans to establish a diplomacy with the Na'vi. But as he said, he felt in love for everything that Neytiri showed him. Every time he wakes up he knows that's not a life he can live.

There’s something so genuine about this little love story, it’s really organic, like these two start off with no interest in each other at all, it’s something that gradually builds and builds and when the first hints drop here and there it works because they’re bonding in this more fundamental way to begin that itself slowly builds as their personal investment in each other grows. And it really starts going up a notch once she’s helped him become a capable Ikran rider and the two stand on more equal footing, sharing in this activity they both love and start loving to do together because of it. He doesn’t fall in love with everything because he fell in love with her, he fell in love with HER because he fell in love with everything she shared with him and guided him to be part of. And she fell in love with him for that same reason, her personal investment in him and watching him fall in love with all these things she loves, the beauty of that journey of his.
The characters (especially the main ones) are not the cardboard cutouts some would have you believe.

Jake Sully is one of the most creative protagonists imo with how he transitions from being paralyzed in the legs to having the new body, and how he transitions from being a normal human to bonding with the Na’vi. I just cannot believe how ahead of it’s time this is O.o

I agree. Obviously the imagery was a nod to “you know what” but it’s a natural thing and that’s one of the reasons why I love this movie, nature and it’s natural beauty is wonderful to perceive.
This love scene impresses me better that that of titanic. The music, the feelings in it and the atmosphere is much more moving.

This is a very well balanced scene. Many little moments, subtleties, on their faces. Very impressive. And the score is perfect.
As a kid I didn't really understand this😐😕 as now that I'm older🤔. Even though the cine was deleted from this movie, the hair connecting, now that Iam 18 years of age I am like wow😲😯 once they did that they can literally feel each other😊, whatever he felt she felt it and whatever she felt he felt it. Now I know what it means when she told Jake that they're mated for life🌌💙.

my favorite scene in the entire movie. it's not even the part where they get together but rather the part where jake hears all the voices in the vines, you can really feel the wonder and it always gives me chills. the atmosphere is just *chef's kiss*

When I saw this scene in theaters, I thought, “wow that’s graphic for a PG-13 film.” But that was because I saw the theatrical version, not the extended version that showed Neytiri and Jake connecting their nervous systems together. Now I understand and it makes me wonder something: have the Navi evolved to the point that they don’t have reproductive organs, or does mating have a different meaning to the Navi than what humans understand it as?
The connection of their braids is not the Na'vi version of s3x, they reproduce the same way humans do with similar looking reproductive organs. With the connection they only come to read each other's thoughts and feelings, it's a connection of their minds.
They do sexually reproduce like humans do, but this (mating) is a separate thing in itself :) it's all about intimacy, about forming a deep emotional connection with your chosen partner. When tzahelu (the bond) is made, you then feel everything your partner feels, see bits of their memories, every little thing about them. According to the lore created by James Cameron, when a chosen pair starts this process, they offer themselves up to their goddess for judgement. If she feels that the pairing would not work, then the bond won't take hold. If she gives her approval of the pair, then the bond takes hold and an intense feeling of euphoria falls over both of them before they eventually fall asleep to complete the mating. If I remember correctly, it doesn't necessarily lead to sexual intercourse, but it's not a rare occurrence if it does
