Bernie Eccelson is a total wanker biased againat Mansell from day 1. Nigel could have won that World championship 3 times. But unfortunate breakdown and burst tyres stopped him. He was a fantstic gutsy racer. Maybe not as "good" as Senna who, before he was tragically killed, had only 3 under his belt (Shumacher was but much more boring driver and has won more championships if that is what you need to be great)...the politics in this sport is rotten inside and out. Senna like Mansell and Gille Villnerve (sorry can't spell) putting their all in..proper racing. Not like today boring as hell.

Mansell, Senna, Prost, Piquet, Schumacher and the rest of pre 1994 F1 racing driver are the great guy who made the F1 great. All of them are great respectful driver (and I said this being a huge fan of Senna),
and a sportsman is just an ordinary man, with all of this dumb dirty tactics and blaming others, emotions, rage (and the list goes on), and that made the pre 1994 F1 is great.

Some of the US TV commentators picked up on Nigel’s fantasy life , unlike the UK and Murray. Like the non existent white painted line that took him off at Monaco 84. And the false claim that McLaren blocked him from entering his pit at Estoril 89 - using it as an excuse over team radio to his team informing him he’d been black flagged then claiming he didn’t know he’d been black flagged.

    • @MrSkeleton131

You're so right, they thought the sun shone out of Mansell's arse. It's because the BBC were the the broadcasters for the UK specifically, but they also got beamed out to lots of other countries in the world too as they were the only consistent broadcast in English. This has caused people to blindly believe what they said. It's the exact same with Sky Sports now.
It's why you'd hear Murray Walker randomly bring up people like Martin Donnelly or Mark Blundell on a way more consistent basis regardless of their position in qualifying/the race, over other drivers of different nationalities.

  • @globalawareness2009

Mansell tried to brake late. He went to the dirty side of the track and overshot the chicane. It wasn't Ayrton's fault. Peter Warr thought Mansell to be "not that good after all." He had the right car and the balls to go all out and won a WDC. That's the way it goes. One of the British drivers who should've won at least a couple of WDC's was Watson. A shame. He was head and shoulders above Prost. Only he never had the car to match his skills.

@@ClassicFormulaOne1 but that's not enough, though, is it? Watson, like Senna, fought for a championship in a piece of junk of a car. Prost had the second best car in 82 and lost to Rosberg. That year it was Watson who should have been the victor on pure merit. In the end Watson was head and shoulders above Prost on race craft, style and he was, in terms of speed, faster than the Frenchman, too. Prost, whilst very good, won from Mansell in 86 on a fluke, lost to Senna in the atrocious Lotus 99T in 87, lost to Senna again in 88 in the same car, and should have lost to Senna again in 89 were it not for Balestre. Lost to Senna again in 90, and was being soundly beaten in a dominant Williams by Senna in a lousy Mcl in 93.
Watson never lost a race he should have won. He won five he never should have. He fought for a championship in a lousy car, when Lauda trailed behind in standings. He was a true gentleman driver who never crashed into a driver on purpose like Prost did on a number of occasions, like 89 with Senna at Suzuka. Watson is a driver of stature, Prost, though very good, is not of the same caliber as Watson.

As a huge Mansell fan this incident was rather humorous. After the race Senna was asked about the incident between him and Nigel. "Senna said what incident? Nigel forgot that there was a corner coming up and after he passed me he would have to get on the brakes". That's why Nigel flew across that portion of the tracks. He simply out maneuvered himself by failing to control his car in the braking zone.

As much as I loved the guy as a racer, he was a right bad sport at times old Nige. Don't think I've ever seen a successful F1 overtake at chicane on Quebec wall before, if he tried a move on Senna there it was likely to have been very ambitious. Only thing I can think is that maybe Senna dummy moved to go into the pits and then carried on. Either way not the best place to try and overtake.

To stop the race in 1984 at Monaco was the Belgian Jacky Ickx's decision. He was responsible. Prost had a Porsche engine in the McLaren, and Ickx drove for Porsche in Sportscars at the time. It was rumoured that it was the reason why Ickx stopped the GP, while Prost was leading the race.
What was wrong in 1990 at Suzuka ? Senna deliberately crashed into Prost's Ferrari, but he got away with it unpunished and won the championship.

    • @2mmarcelorj
      @2mmarcelorj 7 ปีที่แล้ว

I was at this race so I caught the tv replay. Jackie Stewart was on the CBC coverage and made a hilarious observation that Mansell was quite "delicate"", often seemingly to be seriously injured only to quickly recover. Case in point here. Nigel could be very fast but what a baby sometimes.

    • @DaRemy

Right. But I guess he suffered from some physiological problems. Do you remember Nigel's crash at Le Mans a couple of years ago? The crash looked like a quite normal one. Even the car didnt look too bad at all. Nevertheless Mansell suffered from massive head injuries which forced him to retired from motorsports. He even had problems to recall memories over a longer period of time (6 months).

Mansell I believe did deserve to win more titles than he did. But Mansell unlike Senna, Piquet and a especially Prost didn't play politics to gain advantages. People love to speculate on what might have been, but to say that if that tyre hadn't blown or engine hadn't failed that person would have won is a big if. Who's to say they wouldn't have gone on to make a mistake and crash. One thing that does annoy me is when people try to belittle Mansell for the 92 championship because he had such a dominant car and yet few people criticise Senna for the 88 tittle when McLaren one 15 out of 16 races. No driver has won a title in a bad car. I also think Mansell showed how good he was with his switch to Indy car the following year. Although Indy car is considered second rate to F1, for any driver to do what Mansell did in joining a new team driving a car that was completely different to F1 cars, driving on unfamiliar circuits and in a car that wasn't totally dominant and then went on to win the title at his first attempt I think deserves a lot of respect.

Mansell was fast, but like Piquet said, he was flustered, made a lot of nonsense when he was behind another car. And you cant compare 1992 with 1988. Mansell had patrese as a teammate, and senna had a very difficult way with prost as a teammate. The same prost that was far superior to the mansell in 1990.

    Mansell memory.
Nigel Mansell has explained that Ayrton Senna once admitted to being a "b*****d" following a season of hard-fought racing that saw him miss out on the World Championship.
The two drivers shared plenty of memorable battles during the late 1980s and early '90s, with many coming during Mansell's title-winning 1992 season.
Mansell's Williams car was the pick of the field that year but, in order to win his first and only title, the British driver would have to overcome a determined Senna.
The Brazilian had won three championships in fours years behind the wheel of his McLaren, all while building a reputation as a fierce and unrelenting racer.
But after Senna lost the '92 title fight, Mansell has revealed that the F1 legend approached him on the podium to justify his racing style.
After Senna endured five retirements in just eight races, Mansell was crowned as the 1992 World Champion in Hungary in what the 68-year-old has described as a "mind-numbing moment".
That race finished with the three title protagonists on the podium: Mansell, Senna and Mansell's teammate, Riccardo Patrese.
"[Senna] wanted to win the championship but the most fitting moment for me was when I won the championship in Hungary - he was on the top step with me," Mansell told F1's Beyond The Grid podcast.
"He turned to me and said, 'You realise how good a feeling that is now, don't you? Now you know what a b*****d I am, because that's the best feeling in the world'.
"There are some people who would go to any lengths, especially if they've already won it once, to win it again and again.
"There are some drivers I could mention who are true sportsmen and win it the right way, and then are a few others who definitely do not win it the right way, but they win it and that's all that matters.
"To have Ayrton put his arm around me on the top step in Hungary and admit a number of things to me, I said to him, 'Well, at least you admit it!'."

What happened, happened. His Williams flew through the air, landed on its nose in the gravel trap and pieces of the car were flying off as I negotiated the chicane.” Apparently Mansell was trying to pass Senna for a while and on lap 14 he managed to do so, but forgot to brake at the corner or at least drove into the corner to hot and basically crashed all by himself.

Mansell was overrated compared to Senna and Prost. In fact, he was soundly thrashed by Prost when they were teammates at Ferrari in 1990. That said, he still overachieved. Remember, when he first started, his team boss had such comtempt for him that he famously said he wouldn't win a gp "as long as I have a hole in my ass". With such an inauspiscious start - to wind up F1 World Champ, Indy Car Champ, over 30 wins, many poles, is not a bad record. Very good driver - not great.

He's still not moving....oh my god...he's dead, he's dead! NOOOOO! Nigel Mansell is dead! Taken away from us way before his prime, oh wait, just kidding.

Amusing how Senna fans are calling Mansell a crybaby. They were both emotional guys. Not a bad thing to be, ESPECIALLY for a racing driver.

Mansell made a mistake, then tried to blame Senna, who didn't even touch him.
